Thafseer Lafzi 8 — Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87) — the whole sūrah سُورَة الْأَعْلَى

Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87), āyāt 1 to 19 — the whole sūrah: its introduction, the meaning of every word, the grammar that goes with it, and seven lessons. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
A new sūrah begins: Sūrat al-Aʿlā, taken from āyah 1 to āyah 19. Opens with a full introduction — juzʾ 30, sūrah 87, 19 āyāt, Makkī, the Prophet's ﷺ recitation of it in both ʿĪd prayers and in the first rakʿah of a three-rakʿah witr, the Subḥāna rabbiya l-Aʿlā said on reciting the first āyah, that no sabab al-nuzūl is narrated for this sūrah, the setting of the early revelation, what the sūrah sets out to establish, and its five-part structure. Word meanings: sabbiḥ, ism, rabbika, al-aʿlā, alladhī, khalaqa, fa-sawwā, qaddara, fa-hadā, akhraja, al-marʿā, fa-jaʿalahu, ghuthāʾ, aḥwā, illā, mā shāʾa llāh, yaʿlamu, al-jahr, wa-mā yakhfā, nuyassiruka, lil-yusrā, fa-dhakkir, in, nafaʿat, adh-dhikrā, nāfiʿ, sa-yadhdhakkaru, man, yakhshā, yatajannabuhā, al-ashqā, yaṣlā, an-nāra l-kubrā, thumma, lā yamūtu, wa-lā yaḥyā, qad, aflaḥa, tazakkā, dhakara, fa-ṣallā, tuʾthirūna, al-ḥayāt ad-dunyā, al-ākhirah, khayr, abqā, aṣ-ṣuḥuf al-ūlā, ṣuḥuf Ibrāhīma wa-Mūsā. Grammar: bāb tafʿīl and bāb ifʿāl, the tafaʿʿul pattern, the amr, the muḍāriʿ, ism tafḍīl, ism fāʿil, the fāʾ that fixes sequence against the wāw that merely joins, the sīn of istiqbāl, qad before a māḍī, the tāʾ of the feminine on nafaʿat, the kasrah taken only for the join, the alif maqṣūrah, and why the ṣifah of an-nār comes as al-kubrā and not al-akbar. Closes with seven lessons — dhikr as a daily habit, His knowledge and power in every act named, the Qurʾān as the book made to be memorised, whom to remind, the three things success consists of, the dunyā as a field sown for the ākhirah, and that this last point stood in the earlier books too. The class's explanation of āyah 6 was not recorded.
Tafsīr lafẓī of Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87) — the meaning of every word, plus the grammar that goes with it. A new sūrah starts here. You met Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah (88) in Lesson 7; this lesson opens Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87) with a full introduction and then works it from āyah 1 to āyah 19 — the whole sūrah.

1 · Introduction — the sūrah's identity card #

Its name is سُورَةُ الْأَعْلَى — Sūrat al-Aʿlā.

ItemDetail
JuzʾThe thirtieth juzʾ
NumberSūrah 87 in the order of the Qurʾān
Length19 āyāt in all
TypeMakkī — revealed in the Makkan period

"Last time we looked at Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah … now it is Sūrat al-Aʿlā we take up."

2 · Its merits — where the Prophet ﷺ recited it #

"If I am to say something about this sūrah, the thing that must be said is its merits — faḍāʾil. You should know these."

In the two ʿĪd prayers. Rasūlullāh ﷺ used to recite this sūrah in the ʿĪd prayers — both ʿĪd al-Fiṭr (the ʿīd of fasting) and ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā (the ʿīd of Ḥajj). In the first rakʿah, after Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, he would recite this sūrah.

In witr. Likewise, when he prayed witr as three rakʿahs, in the first rakʿah he would recite this sūrah.

And on reciting the first āyah — Sabbiḥi sma rabbika l-aʿlā — it is reported that he would say

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى

Subḥāna rabbiya l-Aʿlā.

3 · No occasion of revelation is narrated #

As for the sabab al-nuzūl, the occasion of revelation: for this sūrah no particular cause or incident is narrated. There is no specific event behind it.

4 · The setting — the early revelation #

But there is a context. In the early period of the revelation, when the waḥy was first coming down, the Prophet ﷺ was troubled by a fear: would he forget what was being revealed to him? Would what was given to him slip away? Out of that fear he would repeat the āyāt as they were being revealed, to fix them. The āyāt of this sūrah come to reassure him.

5 · What the sūrah sets out to establish #

6 · The shape of the sūrah — its five parts #

"Look at how the sūrah is built."

PartĀyātWhat it does
First1 – 5Opens with a command — sabbiḥ, an imperative — and sets out His acts
Second6 – 8A promise made to the Prophet ﷺ, and reassurance to him
Third9 – 13The command to remind; the response of those who fear, against the wretched and the Fire
Fourth14 – 15The path of success — purifying oneself, remembering Allah's name, establishing the prayer
Fifth16 – 19This world is petty, small, perishing; the hereafter is what matters — and this stood in the earlier books too

The four acts named inside āyāt 1-5, all of them His:

ArabicTermMeaning
الْخَلْقal-khalqcreating
التَّسْوِيَةat-taswiyahproportioning, shaping evenly
التَّقْدِيرat-taqdīrmeasuring out, decreeing
الْهِدَايَةal-hidāyahguiding

7 · Āyah 1 — the command that opens the sūrah #

سَبِّحِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلْأَعْلَى

Sabbiḥi sma rabbika l-aʿlā

"Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High."

WordMeaning
سَبِّحْ"glorify! declare His purity!"
ٱسْمthe name
رَبِّكyour Lord
ٱلْأَعْلَىthe Most High, the highest of all
The grammar to hold onto. سَبِّحْ is from the bāb تَفْعِيل (tafʿīl) — sabbaḥa · yusabbiḥu · tasbīḥ — and the form standing here is the أَمْر (amr, the imperative), addressed to you, second person. It tells the Prophet ﷺ, and through him you and me: declare His purity.

Why sabbiḥi, with a kasrah? Because of the join to what follows. When you read it connected, a vowel is needed where the two sukūn-bearing sounds meet, and that kasrah is there only for the join — it is not part of the word.

ٱلْأَعْلَى is an اِسْم تَفْضِيل (ism tafḍīl) — a superlative: not merely "high" but the highest.

A parallel: in Sūrat an-Naṣr,

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ

fa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbika — the same verb, put to the same work.

8 · Āyah 2 — created, then proportioned #

ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ

Alladhī khalaqa fa-sawwā

"He who created and proportioned."

WordMeaning
ٱلَّذِيthe One who, He who
خَلَقَHe created — He brings into being
فَسَوَّىٰand then He proportioned it — made it even, shaped it, set it right

سَوَّىٰ is again a bāb تَفْعِيل verb — sawwā · yusawwī · taswiyah.

Two acts, both His — first the khalq, then the taswiyah. And the فَ (fāʾ) between them is what tells you the order: the taswiyah comes after the khalq. He created, and then He shaped what He had created. That is what the fāʾ carries here — sequence, one thing following the other.

9 · Āyah 3 — the two connectives, and the decree #

وَٱلَّذِي قَدَّرَ فَهَدَىٰ

Wa-lladhī qaddara fa-hadā

"And He who determined and guided."

Before the meaning, the two little letters. The وَ (wāw) is a حَرْف عَطْف — a joining particle: it links, but it does not by itself tell you which came first. The فَ (fāʾ) does — what stands before it comes first, what stands after it comes after.
WordMeaning
قَدَّرَHe measured out, He determined, He decreed
فَهَدَىٰand then He guided

Everything has a determination fixed for it; and having created a thing and fixed its measure, He then guides it to what suits it.

10 · Āyah 4 — the pasture brought forth #

وَٱلَّذِي أَخْرَجَ ٱلْمَرْعَىٰ

Wa-lladhī akhraja l-marʿā

"And He who brought out the pasture."

WordMeaning
أَخْرَجَHe brought out, He caused to come forth
ٱلْمَرْعَىٰthe pasture — the grazing

The bāb of أَخْرَجَ is إِفْعَال (ifʿāl, the afʿala pattern) — akhraja · yukhriju · ikhrāj. He is the One who brought forth the pasture for the grazing animals.

11 · Marʿā — and the root it shares with the shepherd #

مَرْعَى — marʿā: a place of grazing, pasture.

A ḥadīth you already know:

كُلُّكُمْ رَاعٍ وَكُلُّكُمْ مَسْؤُولٌ عَنْ رَعِيَّتِهِ

Kullukum rāʿin wa-kullukum masʾūlun ʿan raʿiyyatih — "every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you is answerable for his flock."

The point is the root. رَاعِي (rāʿī, the shepherd) and رَعِيَّة (raʿiyyah, the flock, those in his charge) come from this same root as مَرْعَى. "That is what makes the connection worth noticing here."

12 · Āyah 5 — and then He turned it to dark stubble #

فَجَعَلَهُ غُثَآءً أَحْوَىٰ

Fa-jaʿalahu ghuthāʾan aḥwā

"Then He made it dark, withered debris."

WordMeaning
فَجَعَلَهُthen He made it — jaʿala · yajʿalu, "to make, to turn [something] into [something]"
غُثَآءًdry rubbish, withered stubble — the debris a flood leaves behind
أَحْوَىٰblackish, dark
And again the فَ does its work: this happens after what was just described — first He brought out the pasture, green and growing, and then He turned it into this. What was green pasture He turns into dark, shrivelled waste.

13 · Where the first part ends #

Āyāt 1-5 are done: the command to glorify, and the four acts — khalq, taswiyah, taqdīr, hidāyah — each one His. The second part of the sūrah, the promise to the Prophet ﷺ, begins at āyah 6.

14 · Āyah 6 #

The class's explanation of āyah 6 was not recorded.

15 · Āyah 7 — He knows the open and the hidden #

إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفَىٰ

Illā mā shāʾa llāh · innahu yaʿlamu l-jahra wa-mā yakhfā

"Except what Allah wills. Indeed He knows what is open and what is hidden."

إِلَّا — illā: it means "except."

WordMeaning
إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُexcept what Allah wills
يَعْلَمُHe knows — from ʿalima · yaʿlamu; the مُضَارِع (muḍāriʿ, the present-future form) is yaʿlamu
ٱلْجَهْرwhat is open, what is out in the open, what is said aloud
وَمَا يَخْفَىٰand what is concealed, what is hidden — yakhfā from khafiya · yakhfā

Both alike are known to Him.

16 · Āyah 8 — and We shall ease your way #

وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

Wa-nuyassiruka lil-yusrā

"And We shall ease you towards ease."

WordMeaning
نُيَسِّرُ"We shall make easy" — bāb تَفْعِيل: yassara · yuyassiru, "to make easy, to smooth the way"; the نُـ at the front is naḥnu, "We"
لِلْيُسْرَىٰtowards the easy way, towards what is easy

So: We shall smooth your way to ease — easy for you to do good, to carry out what is good, rather than burdensome.

Is a double promise being made? The ease is spoken of in more than one place, and more than one thing is being made easy: the receiving and holding of the revelation, and the doing of good with it.

17 · Āyah 9 — so remind, if the reminder benefits #

فَذَكِّرْ إِن نَّفَعَتِ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

Fa-dhakkir in nafaʿati dh-dhikrā

"So remind, if the reminder benefits."

WordMeaning
ذَكِّرْ"remind! admonish!" — bāb تَفْعِيل (dhakkara · yudhakkiru · tadhkīr), and this is the أَمْر: you, remind them
إِنif
نَّفَعَتِit benefited, it is of use
ٱلذِّكْرَىٰthe reminder, the admonition
Two grammar points on نَّفَعَتِ. (1) It carries the تَاء of the feminine on the end because ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ is مُؤَنَّث (feminine). (2) Read in connection it takes a kasrah — nafaʿati — and that kasrah is temporary, there only for the join; it is not part of the word. (The same thing happened at sabbiḥi in āyah 1.)

And note the ending of ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ — it closes with an أَلِف مَقْصُورَة (alif maqṣūrah), as several words in this sūrah do.

So: so remind — if the reminder brings benefit. Where reminding is of use, give it.

18 · Nāfiʿ — the ism fāʿil, and a duʿāʾ you already know #

From this same nafaʿa comes نَافِع (nāfiʿ) — the اِسْم فَاعِل (ism fāʿil, the active participle): "the one that benefits, beneficial."

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka ʿilman nāfiʿan — "O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge."

19 · Āyah 10 — the one who fears is the one who takes heed #

سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَن يَخْشَىٰ

Sa-yadhdhakkaru man yakhshā

"He who fears will take heed."

WordMeaning
سَـthe سِين in front — the mark of the future, istiqbāl
يَذَّكَّرُhe takes heed — with the sīn, "he will take heed"
مَنwhoever, the one who
يَخْشَىٰhe fears — from khashiya · yakhshā

The one who fears [Allah] will take the reminder — he is the one on whom the admonition lands.

20 · Āyah 11 — and the wretched one shuns it #

وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَشْقَى

Wa-yatajannabuhā l-ashqā

"And the most wretched will shun it."

WordMeaning
يَتَجَنَّبُhe avoids it, he keeps away from it, he shuns it — tajannaba · yatajannabu, the تَفَعُّل (tafaʿʿul) pattern
ـهَاit — the reminder
ٱلْأَشْقَىthe most wretched, the most ill-fated — the one furthest from good fortune
Set ٱلْأَشْقَى against سَعِيد (saʿīd) — the fortunate, the blessed: al-ashqā is his opposite. And it is again an ism tafḍīl form, like al-aʿlā in āyah 1.

The wretched one steers clear of it — he keeps himself away from the reminder and the admonition, while the one who fears takes it to heart.

21 · Āyah 12 — the greatest Fire, and why al-kubrā #

ٱلَّذِي يَصْلَى ٱلنَّارَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

Alladhī yaṣlā n-nāra l-kubrā

"He who will burn in the greatest Fire."

WordMeaning
يَصْلَىhe will burn in it, he will roast in it, he will enter it
ٱلنَّارَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰthe greatest Fire
The grammar to hold onto: ٱلنَّار is مُؤَنَّث — feminine — so its صِفَة (ṣifah, its qualifying adjective) is put in the feminine too: not al-akbar but ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ. The adjective follows its noun in gender. That is the rule operating here.

22 · Āyah 13 — neither death nor life #

ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوتُ فِيهَا وَلَا يَحْيَىٰ

Thumma lā yamūtu fīhā wa-lā yaḥyā

"Then he will neither die therein nor live."

WordMeaning
ثُمَّthen, thereafter
لَا يَمُوتُhe will not die
فِيهَاin it — in that Fire, which the previous āyah named
وَلَا يَحْيَىٰnor will he live — yaḥyā from ḥayiya · yaḥyā, "to live"; this is its muḍāriʿ
He does not die in it, and he does not live in it. Not death, which would end it — and not life, which would be worth having.

23 · Āyah 14 — he has certainly succeeded #

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ

Qad aflaḥa man tazakkā

"He has succeeded who purifies himself."

WordMeaning
قَدْbefore a past-tense verb it gives certainty: "indeed, certainly, without doubt"
أَفْلَحَhe succeeded, he prospered, he attained — bāb إِفْعَال (ifʿāl)
مَنwhoever
تَزَكَّىٰhe purified himself, he cleansed himself — the تَفَعُّل (tafaʿʿul) pattern, tazakkā · yatazakkā
So this is not "he may succeed" — it is "he has certainly succeeded." Whoever purified himself has certainly succeeded; the one who cleanses his own self is the one who has won.

24 · Āyah 15 — remembered, and then prayed #

وَذَكَرَ ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ

Wa-dhakara sma rabbihi fa-ṣallā

"And remembered the name of his Lord and prayed."

WordMeaning
ذَكَرَhe remembered, he made mention
ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِthe name of his Lord — ism, the name; rabb, the Lord; the pronoun ـهِ making it his Lord
فَصَلَّىٰand then he prayed — ṣallā · yuṣallī · ṣalāh, again the تَفْعِيل pattern
And the فَ again gives you the order: he remembered his Lord's name, and then he prayed.

So — make dhikr. That is what is being asked of you here.

25 · Āyah 16 — but you prefer this world #

بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا

Bal tuʾthirūna l-ḥayāta d-dunyā

"But you prefer the life of this world."

WordMeaning
تُؤْثِرُونَyou prefer, you give precedence to, you choose ahead of the other — it is in the plural: you, all of you, and the plural ending is visible on it
ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَاthe worldly life, the life of this world — a phrase you already know well

But you prefer this worldly life — you put it first.

26 · Āyah 17 — better, and the one that lasts #

وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ

Wa-l-ākhiratu khayrun wa-abqā

"While the hereafter is better and more lasting."

WordMeaning
ٱلْآخِرَةthe hereafter, the life to come
خَيْرbetter, the superior one
أَبْقَىٰmore lasting, more enduring — that which remains
أَبْقَىٰ is an ism tafḍīl, a superlative form, from بَاقٍ (bāqin), "lasting." (The third ism tafḍīl in this sūrah — after al-aʿlā and al-ashqā.)

The hereafter is better, and it is the one that lasts. That is the point being made.

27 · Āyāt 18-19 — and this stood in the earlier scriptures #

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَفِى ٱلصُّحُفِ ٱلْأُولَىٰ

Inna hādhā la-fī ṣ-ṣuḥufi l-ūlā

"Indeed this is in the former scriptures."

صُحُفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَمُوسَىٰ

Ṣuḥufi Ibrāhīma wa-Mūsā

"The scriptures of Ibrāhīm and Mūsā."

WordMeaning
إِنَّ هَٰذَاindeed this — this matter just stated
لَفِىis in
صُحُفscriptures, scrolls — those sent down to the prophets before
ٱلْأُولَىٰthe first, the former ones

And then it names them: the scriptures of Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi s-salām, and the scriptures of Mūsā ʿalayhi s-salām.

28 · How the sūrah closes #

"And with that the sūrah is finished. Notice how it ends: it closes with the names of prophets — Ibrāhīm and Mūsā. This is the sūrah that ends with the names of prophets."

29 · The lessons to draw #

1 · Glorifying and remembering Allah's name is a daily habit #

Glorifying the exalted name of Allah, remembering Him, praising Him — this must be the everyday practice of a believer, part of the ordinary run of his life. It comes straight from the sūrah's opening command: sabbiḥ is an imperative addressed to us.

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ

Alā bi-dhikri llāhi taṭmaʾinnu l-qulūb — "truly, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest." It is in the remembrance of Allah that the heart settles and peace comes. And tasbīḥ is one kind of dhikr — one of its forms. So include it: make it part of what you do. Make your tongue a tongue that remembers Allah.

The class's ḥadīth here, about what is most beloved to Allah and about the tongue, was not recorded.

2 · Every act named in the sūrah shows His knowledge and His power #

In each of the acts the sūrah names — الْخَلْق (creating), التَّسْوِيَة (proportioning), التَّقْدِير (measuring out), الْهِدَايَة (guiding) — Allah's complete knowledge (ʿilm) and His complete power (qudrah) are reflected. Every one of them is a mirror of His ʿilm and His qudrah. All of it comes from Allah's decree and reflects His knowledge.

3 · The Qurʾān is the book made to be memorised #

That the Qurʾān is a book given to be memorised, and to be understood — this sūrah confirms it. None of the earlier scriptures had this: memorising them was not something laid on their people, and it is not found among them.

The Qurʾān is not like that. It was revealed in Arabic, and in that same Arabic it stays — whichever country you go to, it is the same wording. That is what makes it something that can be memorised. Even small children memorise it. It is for that memorisation that Allah revealed it in this way.

And you will see this written at the front of some copies of the Qurʾān — on the first page, or on the cover:

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَافِظُونَ

"We Ourselves have sent down the Reminder, and We Ourselves are its guardians." — "We revealed it, and We shall protect it."

4 · Reminding — and whom to remind #

That is what the reminder is: putting some matters first, admonishing, calling to mind. And the āyah made a condition on it — if the reminder benefits.

So the reminder should be given where it will do good. Direct it to those who will take benefit from it — the ones in whom reminding will produce something. Where a person will be moved by it, that is where it should go.

5 · What success actually consists of #

It is three things, and they are the three the āyāt name:

  1. Purify yourself — clean yourself of sin; make tazkiyah of your own self.
  2. Remember the name of Allah.
  3. Establish the prayer.

These are what bring real success to those who do them. When difficulties come and you act on this, it is this that will bring you through in the right way.

6 · Do not be deceived by the world — it is the field, the ākhirah is the harvest #

However much this temporary life may glitter in front of you, the āyāt remind you that it is the permanent, higher hereafter that is better. So do not be taken in by a few comforts, a few fine things here.

Think of it as a cultivated field — a مَزْرَعَة (mazraʿah): what you plant here, you harvest there. Whatever you sow here, that is what you take with you.

7 · And this same point stood in the earlier books #

This Qurʾān was revealed to Rasūlullāh ﷺ, and among the matters in it there are some that were also given in the scriptures revealed to the prophets before him.

And one of those is precisely this closing point — how much the life of this world is, against how much the ākhirah is; that the hereafter is the lasting one. That was stated in the earlier books, and it is stated here in the Qurʾān as well. That is what these last āyāt are doing.

Cold-recall drill for Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87) — the whole sūrah, āyāt 1-19. Cover the right column, read the Arabic, say the meaning. Then cover the left column and rebuild the Arabic from the English. The scope card (Makkī, juzʾ 30, sūrah 87, 19 āyāt, the ʿĪd and witr recitation) and the grammar rules at the bottom are the other half of the paper — drill them as hard as the words. The class's explanation of āyah 6 was not recorded.

The rules to recite from memory #

RuleStatement
The فَ of sequenceThe فَ tells you the order — what stands before it comes first, what stands after comes after. khalaqa then sawwā; akhraja l-marʿā then jaʿalahu ghuthāʾan; dhakara sma rabbihi then ṣallā
The وَ that only joinsوَ is a حَرْف عَطْف — it links, but it does not by itself tell you which came first. Only the فَ does that
The kasrah of the joinsabbiḥi and nafaʿati take a kasrah only because of the join — a vowel is needed where the two sukūn-bearing sounds meet. It is temporary and not part of the word
ism tafḍīlA superlative form. Three in this sūrah: ٱلْأَعْلَى (the highest), ٱلْأَشْقَى (the most wretched), أَبْقَىٰ (the most lasting, from بَاقٍ)
ism fāʿilThe active participle — nafaʿa → نَافِع, "the one that benefits"
The سِين of istiqbālسَـ before a muḍāriʿ marks the future: yadhdhakkaru "he takes heed" → سَيَذَّكَّرُ "he will take heed"
qad + māḍīقَدْ before a past-tense verb gives certainty — not "he may succeed" but "he has certainly succeeded"
The تَاء of the feminineنَّفَعَتِ carries it because ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ is مُؤَنَّث
The ṣifah agrees in genderٱلنَّار is مُؤَنَّث, so its ṣifah comes feminine — ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ, not al-akbar. The adjective follows its noun
أَلِف مَقْصُورَةٱلذِّكْرَىٰ ends in one — as several words in this sūrah do
The root of مَرْعَىرَاعِي (the shepherd) and رَعِيَّة (the flock) come from the same root — the connection drawn from kullukum rāʿin
The parallel to āyah 1فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ in Sūrat an-Naṣr — the same verb, put to the same work
Success is three thingsPurify yourself · remember the name of Allah · establish the prayer
Whom to remindThe āyah puts a condition on it — if the reminder benefits. Direct it to those who will take benefit from it
The dunyā is a fieldA مَزْرَعَة — what you plant here, you harvest there.
Score 80% on the first try (12 / 15). Wrong answers let you retry to advance, but only the first pick is scored.
