Thafseer Lafzi 9 — Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq (86) — the whole sūrah سُورَة الطَّارِق

Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq (86), āyāt 1–17 — the whole sūrah: the guardian over every soul, man made from a gushing fluid, the secrets tested, the decisive word, and the respite given to the plotters. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq, taken whole, from āyah 1 to āyah 17. Opens with the introduction — juzʾ 30, sūrah 86, standing next to Sūrat al-Burūj (85), named from the word in its own first āyah, revealed after al-Burūj, among the short sūrahs, recited by the Prophet ﷺ in the second rakʿah of ʿIshāʾ, no sabab al-nuzūl narrated, early Makkan, revealed into a setting of denial of Allah and of the articles of faith — and its central theme, strengthening īmān, opening on the guardian set over every soul. Then the five-part structure and the word-by-word work. Word meanings: wa-s-samāʾ, aṭ-ṭāriq, ṭarq, wa-mā adrāka, mā, an-najm, ath-thāqib, thaqb, in, kullu nafsin, lammā, ʿalayhā, ḥāfiẓ, maḥfūẓ, fa-l-yanẓur, al-insān, mimma, khuliqa, khalaqa, khāliq, makhlūq, māʾ dāfiq, yakhruju, min bayni, aṣ-ṣulb, at-tarāʾib, khārij, innahu, ʿalā rajʿihi, la-qādir, qudrah, maqdūr, yawma, as-sarāʾir, balā, tublā, fa-mā lahu, min quwwatin, wa-lā nāṣir, manṣūr, dhāti r-rajʿ, rujūʿ, rājiʿ, dhāti ṣ-ṣadʿ, la-qawlun faṣl, qawl, qul, qāʾil, maqūl, al-hazl, yakīdūna, kaydā, kāʾid, akīdu, fa-mahhil, al-kāfirīn, amhilhum, ruwaydā, mahl, mumahhil, mumahhal. Grammar and ṣarf: the wāw al-qasam and the majrūr it forces, the ism fāʿil against the ism mafʿūl (ṭāriq/maṭrūq · thāqib/mathqūb · ḥāfiẓ/maḥfūẓ · khāliq/makhlūq · nāṣir/manṣūr · qādir/maqdūr · qāʾil/maqūl), the alif-after-the-first-letter rule for a three-letter ism fāʿil, lāzim against mutaʿaddī and why a lāzim verb has neither ism mafʿūl nor passive, the majhūl (khuliqa, tublā) and the tāʾ it takes for a feminine subject, in and mā carrying negation, lammā with tashdīd meaning illā, mā as istifhām, the lām al-amr, the mutakallim hamzah in akīdu, the hollow verbs whose alif turns into a hamzah in the ism fāʿil (qāla → qāʾil, bāʿa → bāʾiʿ, khāfa → khāʾif, nāma → nāʾim, qāma → qāʾim), the bāb تفعيل of mahhala and the mīm that fronts the ism fāʿil/mafʿūl of an augmented verb, and the kasrah taken only for the join. Closes with seven lessons — the permanent guardian over every soul, remembering what you were made from and dropping the arrogance, that the One who created first can raise again, that every hidden intention is exposed, the sky and the earth as signs that resurrection is possible, not taking the Qurʾān lightly, and patience because in the end the plan is Allah's.
Tafsīr lafẓī of Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq (86) — the meaning of every word, with the grammar along the way, āyāt 1 to 17: the whole sūrah. You met Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87), the sūrah beside it, in Lesson 8.

1 · Introduction — the sūrah's identity card #

Its name is سُورَةُ الطَّارِق — Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq.

ItemDetail
JuzʾThe thirtieth juzʾ
NumberSūrah 86 in the order of the Qurʾān
Its neighbourSūrat al-Burūj (85) stands before it
Length17 āyāt
Where the name comes fromThe word الطَّارِق in the sūrah's own first āyah
When revealedAfter Sūrat al-Burūj; among the short sūrahs
TypeEarly Makkan — from the first stretch of the mission

2 · Where the Prophet ﷺ recited it #

Rasūlullāh ﷺ used to recite this sūrah in the ʿIshāʾ prayer, in the second rakʿah.

Sūrat al-Burūj is also spoken of as recited alongside it. The class's account of how the two were divided over the rakʿahs was not recorded.

3 · No occasion of revelation #

As for the sabab al-nuzūl: for this sūrah there is no particular occasion of revelation. There is nothing special of that kind to report about it.

4 · An early-Makkan sūrah, and the setting it answers #

It was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ in the early period of the mission — the early Makkan period. It is counted among the sūrahs revealed in that first stretch.

And that period is the setting. In it, people were rejecting Allah and rejecting the matters that must be believed in. This sūrah came as a reply to that. "These are the things you should look for in it."

5 · The central theme, and what the sūrah carries #

The central theme: to strengthen and confirm īmān — to establish it firmly.

What it takes upWhere it lands
The angels — that over every one of you a guardian (ḥāfiẓ) is setThe first matter the sūrah raises
The created things — how Allah created manThe second part
The judgement of the Day of Resurrection, that the reckoning is comingMade felt through the sūrah
Those who plot against the truthDealt with at the close

6 · The shape of the sūrah — its five parts #

"Look at how it is built. It falls into five parts."

PartĀyātWhat it does
First1 – 4The oath, and the point sworn upon: every single soul is watched over — kullu nafsin — a guard set over each one
Second5 – 8Man is a lowly creation — made from a single drop of water
Third9 – 10The hidden things: however much we cover them here, Allah brings them into the open on the Day of Resurrection
Fourth11 – 14The Qurʾān is a decisive word, and there is no idle speech in it
Fifth15 – 17The deniers, their plotting, and the warning given to them

7 · Āyah 1 — the oath, and the wāw al-qasam #

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلطَّارِقِ

Wa-s-samāʾi wa-ṭ-ṭāriq

"By the sky and the night-comer."

WordMeaning
وَthe وَاو القَسَم (wāw al-qasam) — the wāw of swearing
ٱلسَّمَآءِthe sky — by the sky
ٱلطَّارِقِthe night-comer — by the ṭāriq
The grammar to hold onto. The وَ standing at the front is the wāw of the oath — that is the name of this letter. And because the wāw al-qasam stands in front of it, ٱلسَّمَاء is put in the مَجْرُور — which is why it reads as-samāʾi, with the kasrah. It is the wāw that does that, and the same happens to the second word after it.

So the whole sense: by the sky, and by the ṭāriq. "And on ṭāriq there is a small matter to take up."

8 · Ṭāriq — the morphology #

FormArabicMeaning
مَاضِيطَرَقَṭaraqa
مُضَارِعيَطْرُقُyaṭruqu
مَصْدَرطَرْقṭarq — knocking, striking, beating
اِسْم فَاعِلطَارِقthat which comes in the night
اِسْم مَفْعُولمَطْرُوقmaṭrūq

طَرْق — ṭarq — means knocking, striking, beating, and along with that it carries the sense of coming by night — one who arrives at night. الطَّارِق is that which comes in the night.

In the Qurʾān the word is placed as an اِسْم فَاعِل (ism fāʿil, the active participle) — طَارِق. The corresponding اِسْم مَفْعُول on the mafʿūl pattern would be مَطْرُوق. It is from that verb that this ṭāriq, the ism fāʿil, is formed.

9 · Āyah 2 — and what will make you know? #

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلطَّارِقُ

Wa-mā adrāka mā ṭ-ṭāriq

"And what will make you know what the night-comer is?"

WordMeaning
أَدْرَىٰto make know, to inform
أَدْرَاكَit made you know — the ـكَ is "you"
مَا ٱلطَّارِقُwhat is the ṭāriq?

Put together: and what has informed you what the ṭāriq is? "What does ṭāriq mean — what is it that has told you what the ṭāriq is?" You have met the verb أَدْرَى before.

The grammar to hold onto. مَا stands in two places in this one āyah — the first mā and the second mā. Understand it as اِسْتِفْهَام (istifhām) — the interrogative, the question-word.

10 · Āyah 3 — the piercing star #

ٱلنَّجْمُ ٱلثَّاقِبُ

An-najmu th-thāqib

"It is the piercing star."

WordMeaning
ٱلنَّجْمthe star
ٱلثَّاقِبthe one that pierces through, the brilliantly shining one

That is what the previous āyah was pointing to — the ṭāriq is a shining star, a star blazing with light.

A word you already know, from

وَٱلنَّجْمُ وَٱلشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدَانِ

Wa-n-najmu wa-sh-shajaru yasjudān — the same word نَجْم, met before.

And in the tafsīrs it is mentioned that الثُّرَيَّا (ath-Thurayyā, the Pleiades) is the star meant.

11 · Thāqib — the morphology, and thaqb #

Its name here is اِسْم فَاعِل — thāqib, just as ṭāriq is an ism fāʿil.

FormArabicMeaning
مَاضِيثَقَبَthaqaba
أَمْراُثْقُبْuthqub
اِسْم فَاعِلثَاقِبthe one that pierces
اِسْم مَفْعُولمَثْقُوبmathqūb — "though we do not need that one here"

And the sense it comes from: ثَقْب (thaqb) — boring or piercing a hole; "the holes that are in the ground, the pits, the hollows."

What follows from it is this: the thāqib pierces the darkness with its light — it drives the darkness away.

12 · Āyah 4 — no soul without a guardian #

إِن كُلُّ نَفْسٍ لَّمَّا عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ

In kullu nafsin lammā ʿalayhā ḥāfiẓ

"There is no soul but has a guardian over it."

WordMeaning
إِنhere it carries the meaning of "not" — it is negating
كُلّevery
نَفْسsoul — so kullu nafsin, every single soul
لَّمَّاread with the tashdīd it carries the meaning of إِلَّا, "except"
عَلَيْهَاover it
حَافِظa protector, a guardian, one who keeps watch
The grammar to hold onto. There are two readings of لما — one light on the mīm, and one with the shaddah — and read with the tashdīd it means إِلَّا, "except". So with in meaning "not" and lammā meaning "except", the āyah reads: there is no soul at all except that over it there is a guardian.

13 · ʿalayhā ḥāfiẓ — how the phrase is built #

Take an ordinary example to see how such a phrase works.

عَلَى ٱلْمَكْتَبِ كِتَابٌ

ʿAlā l-maktabi kitābun — "the book is on the table." مَكْتَب is the table; ʿalā l-maktabi is "on the table"; kitābun is "a book." And likewise

عَلَى ٱلْمَكْتَبِ قَلَمٌ

ʿAlā l-maktabi qalamun — "there is a pen on the table."

Now notice: neither of those two words gives a complete meaning standing alone. "On the table" by itself says nothing, and it is only when the other is added that you have a sentence. عَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ is doing exactly the same work — it is a complete جُمْلَة (jumlah, a sentence): "over it there is a guardian."

Taking the full sense: over every soul Allah has appointed a guardian.

14 · Who the guardian is — the recording angels #

Allah has appointed angels to record the deeds a man does. For every human being — for every soul — there are two angels: one to write down the good, and one for the bad. Throughout his life in this world, they write.

So the imams say it is those angels who are meant here. But note: the word is stated here in the singular — it is not put in the plural, and no division is made in the wording.

Two pairs, two kinds of work.

The pairWhat they doHow far it runs
The guarding pairProtect him through the life of this worldUp to death — and no further. From death onward they do not guard
The writing pairWrite down the good he does and keep it; likewise the badThey present it on the Day of Resurrection — they record everything and submit it

So taken generally, the work of both parties is protection — they are all ḥāfiẓ, guardians — and that is how we can read the word here.

15 · Ḥāfiẓ — the morphology, and the Urdu ḥāfiẓ #

"So: طَارِق, ثَاقِب, and now حَافِظ — the same shape each time."

FormArabicMeaning
مَاضِيحَفِظَḥafiẓa
مُضَارِعيَحْفَظُyaḥfaẓu
مَصْدَرحِفْظḥifẓ
أَمْراِحْفَظْiḥfaẓ
اِسْم فَاعِلحَافِظthe one who guards
اِسْم مَفْعُولمَحْفُوظthe one guarded, the preserved

And this is where the word you know comes from: in Urdu they say حَافِظ of a man who has memorised the Qurʾān — because he has kept it, guarded it. The Urdu farewell اللهُ حَافِظ (Allāh ḥāfiẓ) comes from the same word.

16 · Āyah 5 — so let man look #

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ

Fa-l-yanẓuri l-insānu mimma khuliq

"So let man look at what he was created from."

WordMeaning
فَلْيَنظُرْ"let him look"
ٱلْإِنسَانman
مِمَّfrom what
خُلِقَhe was created
The grammar to hold onto. Look at the لَـ in front of the verb: this is the لَام الأَمْر — the lām that turns the verb into a command: "let him look."

So: let man look at what he was created from — let him consider what it is he was made of.

17 · Naẓara — and why "look" means "consider" #

FormArabic
مَاضِينَظَرَ — "he looked"
مُضَارِعيَنْظُرُ
مَصْدَرنَظَر
But mark what kind of looking. It is more than letting the eye fall on a thing — it is paying attention, taking notice, considering. Not the way someone comes into this house and simply "looks" at it. "Let him consider" — that is the sense.

Think of the way a child attends to a subject, and the way a student who wants to take something in must give it attention.

18 · Āyah 6 — created from a gushing fluid, and the majhūl #

خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍ دَافِقٍ

Khuliqa min māʾin dāfiq

"He was created from a gushing fluid."

The grammar to hold onto. خُلِقَ is the مَجْهُول (majhūl, the passive) form of خَلَقَ. خَلَقَ means "he created"; خُلِقَ means "he was created." So مِمَّ خُلِقَ — "from what he was created."

And the answer: he was created مِن — from — مَآء, water: from a single drop of water. From a gushing drop of fluid — that is what man was made from.

19 · The full paradigm of khalaqa #

FormArabicMeaning
مَاضِيخَلَقَhe created
مَجْهُولخُلِقَhe was created
مُضَارِعيَخْلُقُyakhluqu
مَصْدَرخَلْقkhalq
أَمْراُخْلُقْukhluq
اِسْم فَاعِلخَالِقthe one who creates, the Creator
اِسْم مَفْعُولمَخْلُوقthe one created, the creature

20 · Āyah 7 — from between the backbone and the ribs #

يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ ٱلصُّلْبِ وَٱلتَّرَآئِبِ

Yakhruju min bayni ṣ-ṣulbi wa-t-tarāʾib

"Coming out from between the backbone and the ribs."

WordMeaning
يَخْرُجُit comes out — the muḍāriʿ of خَرَجَ, "he went out"
مِنۢ بَيْنِfrom between — بَيْن is "between"
ٱلصُّلْبthe backbone, the spine
وَٱلتَّرَآئِبthe ribs, the breast region

From between the two, this fluid comes out. In the man, from the region of the back; in the woman, from above the breasts — it emerges from between the chest and the backbone.

21 · Kharaja — the paradigm, and the rule for forming the ism fāʿil #

FormArabic
مَاضِيخَرَجَ
مُضَارِعيَخْرُجُ
مَصْدَرخُرُوج
أَمْراُخْرُجْ
اِسْم فَاعِلخَارِج
Here is the rule, and it is simple: for a three-letter verb, put an alif after the first letter. Just add the alif — that is all.
VerbIsm fāʿil
خَرَجَخَارِج
خَلَقَخَالِق
نَصَرَنَاصِر
ذَهَبَذَاهِب

So, as you have already studied, the ism fāʿil comes out in the form خَارِجٌ.

22 · Lāzim and mutaʿaddī — and why some verbs have no ism mafʿūl #

TermWhat it meansWhat follows
لَازِم (lāzim)A verb that does not take an object — nothing on which the action fallsNo ism mafʿūl comes, and no majhūl (passive) comes either
مُتَعَدِّي (mutaʿaddī)A verb that does take an objectThe ism mafʿūl certainly comes — because there is something the action was done to

خَرَجَ is a lāzim verb: "he went out" — he himself went out; there is nothing he went-out. So for verbs like that, the ism mafʿūl does not come, and neither does the passive.

23 · Āyah 8 — indeed He is able to bring him back #

إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِۦ لَقَادِرٌ

Innahu ʿalā rajʿihi la-qādir

"Indeed He is able to bring him back."

WordMeaning
إِنَّهُindeed He — and who is "He" here? Allah
عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِto return him, to bring him back — to raise man up again
لَقَادِرٌis able; has the power

Indeed He is able to bring him back. It is the raising up again that is the matter stated in this āyah.

24 · Qadara — the morphology #

FormArabicMeaning
مَاضِيقَدَرَqadara
مُضَارِعيَقْدِرُyaqdiru
مَصْدَرقُدْرَةhaving power, capability
أَمْراُقْدُرْuqdur
اِسْم فَاعِلقَادِر— exactly as خَرَجَ → خَارِج
اِسْم مَفْعُولمَقْدُورmaqdūr

25 · Āyah 9 — the day the secrets are tested #

يَوْمَ تُبْلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ

Yawma tublā s-sarāʾir

"On the Day when the secrets are put to the test."

WordMeaning
يَوْمَthe day — the day when it will be brought out into the open
ٱلسَّرَآئِرthe hidden things, the secrets — matters concealed

On that Day the secrets will be laid bare. Hidden where? Here, in this world. Some things are mysteries that nobody knows, that stay unexplained — and all those mysteries will come out.

26 · The illustration — the secrets that never came out here #

There is plenty of it in history.

That is what the sarāʾir are: things kept hidden, which will not come out fully here. On the Day of Resurrection they will all be exposed.

27 · Balā / tublā — the paradigm and the passive #

بَلَا (balā) means "he tested, he tried." Its مُضَارِع is يَبْلُو (yablū).

The grammar to hold onto — this is the point of the section. The form in the āyah is the passive. The مَعْرُوف (active) is يَبْلُو; its مَجْهُول is يُبْلَى (yublā) — "it is tested, it is put to the trial." And because the subject here — السَّرَائِر — is feminine, the form takes the تَاء: تُبْلَى. That is why the āyah reads tublā and not yublā.

28 · Āyah 10 — no strength and no helper #

فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن قُوَّةٍ وَلَا نَاصِرٍ

Fa-mā lahu min quwwatin wa-lā nāṣir

"Then he will have no strength and no helper."

WordMeaning
فَمَاthe مَا here carries the meaning of negation
لَهُfor him, to him
مِن قُوَّةٍany strength — قُوَّة is strength, power; he has no strength of any kind at all
وَلَاnor, none
نَاصِرٍa helper — the ism fāʿil of نَصَرَ, "he helped"

On that Day no one will help anyone, and there is no helper to be had. Why? Because each one is occupied with himself — everyone will be trying to secure his own release, and will not be looking to anyone else's affair.

So: he has no power of his own to free himself, and no other who will come to help him.

And note the counterpart form. From نَصَرَ the ism mafʿūl is مَنْصُور (manṣūr) — the one who is helped. Since helping means someone is helped, manṣūr has to exist as a form: who is helped, and by whom — that is what the ism mafʿūl answers. (The verb belongs to the bāb نَصَرَ · يَنْصُرُ.)

29 · Āyah 11 — by the sky that returns #

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجْعِ

Wa-s-samāʾi dhāti r-rajʿ

"By the sky that returns."

WordMeaning
وَٱلسَّمَآءِagain an oath by the sky — the same wāw al-qasam as in āyah 1
ذَاتِ ٱلرَّجْعِthe possessor of return — the sky that brings back

The sky that sends the rain again and again, returning with it. By the rain-returning sky.

The word رَجْع. Its مَاضِي is رَجَعَ (rajaʿa); its مَصْدَر is رُجُوع (rujūʿ), while what stands here is رَجْع; the أَمْر is اِرْجِعْ (irjiʿ), and the اِسْم فَاعِل is رَاجِع (rājiʿ).

The ism mafʿūl follows the usual pattern.

30 · Āyah 12 — and by the earth that splits open #

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِ

Wa-l-arḍi dhāti ṣ-ṣadʿ

"And by the earth that splits open."

WordMeaning
وَٱلْأَرْضِand by the earth
ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِthe possessor of splitting — the earth that splits apart

Splitting for what? For the plants — so that vegetation may come up. A seed lies inside the earth, and when it sprouts, the ground gives way and splits and makes room for it.

Think about it: the earth is hard. But that soft shoot coming from a single seed — for it to come up, the ground splits open and gives it its place. That is what this oath is pointing at.

31 · Āyah 13 — indeed it is a decisive word #

إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلٌ فَصْلٌ

Innahu la-qawlun faṣl

"Indeed it is a decisive word."

WordMeaning
إِنَّهُindeed it — the Qurʾān
لَقَوْلٌis truly a word, a speech
فَصْلٌdecisive — the word that separates truth from falsehood

قَوْل. Its مَاضِي is قَالَ (qāla), its مُضَارِع يَقُولُ (yaqūlu), and the maṣdar standing here is قَوْل — the saying of a word. The أَمْر is قُلْ (qul).

32 · Qāla — and the hollow verbs whose alif becomes a hamzah #

قُلْ — "say!" — that is the أَمْر, addressed to the second person. Its اِسْم فَاعِل is قَائِل (qāʾil) and its اِسْم مَفْعُول مَقُول (maqūl).

Notice what happens to these verbs: the alif turns into a hamzah in the ism fāʿil.
VerbIsm fāʿil
قَالَقَائِلٌ
بَاعَبَائِعٌ
جَاعَجَائِعٌ
خَافَخَائِفٌ
نَامَنَائِمٌ
قَامَقَائِمٌ

That is how it comes — the alif becomes the hamzah.

33 · Āyah 14 — and it is not a jest #

وَمَا هُوَ بِٱلْهَزْلِ

Wa-mā huwa bi-l-hazl

"And it is not a jest."

WordMeaning
وَمَا هُوَand it is not
بِٱلْهَزْلِjest, frivolity, worthless speech

And it is not idle talk. There is idle speech elsewhere; this is not that. Everything the Qurʾān states is firmly settled.

34 · Āyah 15 — indeed they are plotting a plot #

إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًا

Innahum yakīdūna kaydā

"Indeed they are plotting a plot."

WordMeaning
إِنَّهُمْindeed they — those who refuse to believe and set themselves against it
يَكِيدُونَthey plot, they scheme — from كَادَ, muḍāriʿ يَكِيدُ; here in the plural
كَيْدًاa plot, a scheme

The verb: كَادَ · يَكِيدُ, the أَمْر كِدْ (kid), the اِسْم فَاعِل كَائِد (kāʾid). The word means "he plotted, he schemed" — so: indeed they are hatching a scheme.

The plotting is directed against the Prophet ﷺ.

35 · Āyah 16 — and I am planning a plan #

وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًا

Wa-akīdu kaydā

"And I am planning a plan."

The grammar to hold onto. أَكِيدُ is from the same كَادَ · يَكِيدُ, but in the مُتَكَلِّم — the first person singular: "I do it." When the verb is put to the speaker, the front letter becomes the hamzah and you get أَكِيدُ; in the plural it would be for نَحْنُ, "we."

"And I too plan a plan." Against them, We plan. They plot, and I plot — and it is in order to bring their plotting to an end.

36 · Āyah 17 — so give them a little respite #

فَمَهِّلِ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًۢا

Fa-mahhili l-kāfirīna amhilhum ruwaydā

"So give the disbelievers respite — grant them a little delay."

WordMeaning
فَمَهِّلِgive respite, grant time
ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَthe deniers, those who reject
أَمْهِلْgive time — ـهُمْ, "them": leave them be
رُوَيْدًۢاa little — just a little while

So the whole: give the deniers respite; leave them alone for a little.

Why mahhili, with a kasrah? It takes the kasrah here because of the join with the word after it — and that is temporary, only for the connection.

The morphology. مَهَّلَ (mahhala) — with the shaddah, the four-letter bāb — muḍāriʿ يُمَهِّلُ (yumahhilu). It is the bāb تَفْعِيل — the faʿʿala · yufaʿʿilu pattern; the ثُلَاثِي مَزِيد (thulāthī mazīd), the augmented triliteral in the فَعَّلَ pattern. And for such a four-letter verb, the ism fāʿil takes a مِيم at the front: مُمَهِّل (mumahhil); the ism mafʿūl likewise, مُمَهَّل (mumahhal). Remember the mīm — that is what marks these. مَهْل (mahl) is the respite itself.

37 · The lessons of the sūrah #

"From this sūrah we can take up some lessons."

1 · Over every soul a permanent guardian is appointed #

Over every human soul a permanent guardian has been appointed. And because of those guardians, his deeds — and likewise his thoughts — cannot be hidden from Allah. Nothing is forgotten here; nothing goes unremembered. The angels stand as witness to it. That is what it is showing us.

2 · Remember what you were made from, and drop the arrogance #

The way man was created — from a drop of water. The sūrah is making man call that to mind, and therefore he must be free of arrogance.

Going about full of pride — a man created out of a mean drop of water has no business boasting. There is no need for arrogance in a creature made that lowly.

3 · The One who created first can raise again #

The Allah who created man in the first place will raise him after death.

However much we have decayed, however our bodies lie buried in the ground, He will bring us up from there. And if anyone thinks "we will not be there, it comes to nothing" — however it may be, the raising is real.

4 · Every hidden intention will be exposed #

Every hidden thought and every hidden deed will be brought out on the Day of Resurrection. So one must be careful about one's inner intentions — about the motives underneath what one does.

Whatever is concealed, all of it will be exposed there. And if we keep that in mind, we would keep our lives good.

5 · The sky and the earth are signs that resurrection is possible #

They are Allah's signs. The sky that brings back the rain, and the earth that splits open so plants can come up — these point to the possibility of the resurrection. They are signs, set there to be read.

And the Qurʾān is true: it is a clear separator between truth and falsehood.

6 · Do not take this lightly #

It is not false, and we must not take it lightly. Recall the āyah about the mountains:

لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ لَّرَأَيْتَهُۥ خَٰشِعًا مُّتَصَدِّعًا مِّنْ خَشْيَةِ ٱللَّهِ

"Had We sent this Qurʾān down upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, split apart out of fear of Allah."

And so: even when people scheme against the truth, we must bear it patiently and go on trusting.

7 · The plot is Allah's in the end — so be patient #

In the end it is Allah's plan that stands against their plotting.

So we take patience. "Allah is there" — that is what we say. However much anyone plots and does not stop, we accept it with patience.

38 · The sūrah in one line #

"What this sūrah does, right from the start — and this juzʾ generally — is speak about the Day of Resurrection and about the matters that must be believed in."
Cold-recall crib for Sūrat aṭ-Ṭāriq (86) — the whole sūrah, āyāt 1-17. Cover the right column, read the Arabic, say the meaning. Then cover the left column and rebuild the Arabic from the English. The scope card (early Makkan, juzʾ 30, sūrah 86, 17 āyāt, the ʿIshāʾ recitation), the ṣarf table and the rules at the bottom are the other half of the paper — drill them as hard as the words.

The rules to recite from memory #

RuleStatement
The wāw of the oathوَ at the front of an oath is the وَاو القَسَم, and it puts what follows into the مَجْرُور — that is why it is as-samāʾi, with the kasrah
The three-letter ism fāʿilFor a three-letter verb, put an alif after the first letter — that is all. خَرَجَ → خَارِج · خَلَقَ → خَالِق · نَصَرَ → نَاصِر · ذَهَبَ → ذَاهِب
The ism mafʿūl patternمَفْعُول — طَارِق/مَطْرُوق · ثَاقِب/مَثْقُوب · حَافِظ/مَحْفُوظ · خَالِق/مَخْلُوق · نَاصِر/مَنْصُور · قَادِر/مَقْدُور
lāzim vs mutaʿaddīA لَازِم verb takes no object — so it has NO ism mafʿūl and NO majhūl. خَرَجَ is lāzim: he himself went out. A مُتَعَدِّي verb takes an object — so both come
The majhūlخَلَقَ "he created" → خُلِقَ "he was created." Likewise يَبْلُو → يُبْلَى
The feminine تَاء on a passiveتُبْلَى, not yublā, because ٱلسَّرَائِر is feminine
in and mā as negationإِن in āyah 4 means "not"; the مَا of فَمَا لَهُ in āyah 10 also negates
lammā with tashdīdRead with the shaddah it carries the meaning of إِلَّا, "except" — so āyah 4 reads "there is no soul at all except that over it there is a guardian"
mā as istifhāmمَا stands twice in āyah 2 — it is the interrogative, the question-word
The لَام الأَمْرThe لَـ in فَلْيَنظُرْ turns the verb into a command: "let him look"
The mutakallim hamzahPut the verb to the speaker and the front letter becomes a hamzah: يَكِيدُ → أَكِيدُ, "I plan." The plural would be for نَحْنُ
The hollow verbsThe alif turns into a hamzah in the ism fāʿil. قَالَ→قَائِلٌ · بَاعَ→بَائِعٌ · جَاعَ→جَائِعٌ · خَافَ→خَائِفٌ · نَامَ→نَائِمٌ · قَامَ→قَائِمٌ
The augmented verb takes a مِيممَهَّلَ is bāb تَفْعِيل (faʿʿala · yufaʿʿilu), a ثُلَاثِي مَزِيد — and for such a verb the ism fāʿil/mafʿūl front a مِيم: مُمَهِّل · مُمَهَّل
The kasrah of the joinmahhili takes its kasrah only because of the join with the word after it — temporary, not part of the word**
A complete جُمْلَةعَلَيْهَا حَافِظٌ is a full sentence — like عَلَى ٱلْمَكْتَبِ كِتَابٌ, "the book is on the table": neither word alone gives a complete meaning
Why "look" means "consider"نَظَرَ here is more than letting the eye fall on a thing — it is paying attention, taking notice, considering
The two pairs of angelsThe guarding pair protect through this life, up to death and no further; the writing pair write the good and the bad and present it on the Day of Resurrection. Generally, the work of both is protection — all of them ḥāfiẓ.
Why thāqibThe thāqib pierces the darkness with its light — it drives the darkness away
