Thafseer Lafzi 7 — Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah (88) — the whole sūrah سُورَة الْغَاشِيَة

A new sūrah begins: Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah (88), taken whole — āyah 1 to āyah 26. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
A new sūrah begins: Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah (88), taken whole — āyah 1 to āyah 26. Opens with a full introduction — the name, Makkī, juzʾ 30, sūrah 88, 26 āyāt, revealed after Sūrat adh-Dhāriyāt, the Prophet's ﷺ pairing of it with Sūrat al-Aʿlā in the two rakʿahs of Jumuʿah, the Makkan setting, and the sūrah's four-part structure. Word meanings: hal, ḥadīth, al-ghāshiyah, wujūh / khāshiʿah, ʿāmilah / nāṣibah, taṣlā, nār / ḥāmiyah, tusqā, ʿayn / āniyah, laysa lahum, ṭaʿām, ḍarīʿ, lā yusminu, lā yughnī, jūʿ, jannah / ʿāliyah, lāghiyah, jāriyah, surur / marfūʿah, akwāb / mawḍūʿah, namāriq / maṣfūfah, zarābiyy / mabthūthah, al-ibil / khuliqat, as-samāʾ / rufiʿat, al-jibāl / nuṣibat, fa-dhakkir / mudhakkir, lasta / muṣayṭir, tawallā / kafara, yuʿadhdhibu / al-ʿadhāb al-akbar, iyābahum, ḥisābahum. Grammar: ḥarf istifhām (hal and the hamzah), ṣifah and the naṣb that follows the mawṣūf, why taṣlā is feminine, the muḍāriʿ majhūl of saqā, the manfī muḍāriʿ, and the plurals wajh/wujūh, sarīr/surur, kūb/akwāb, jabal/jibāl. Closes with the duʿāʾs for an easy reckoning and a summary of what the sūrah is for.
Tafsīr lafẓī — the meaning of every word, plus the grammar needed along the way. A new sūrah starts here. You met Sūrat al-Fajr (89) in Lesson 6. This lesson opens Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah (88) with a full introduction and then works it from āyah 1 to āyah 26 — the whole sūrah.

1 · Introduction — the name, and where the sūrah sits #

Its name is سُورَة الْغَاشِيَة — Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah.

ItemDetail
TypeMakkī — revealed in the Makkan period
JuzʾThe thirtieth juzʾ
NumberSūrah 88
Length26 āyāt
Order of revelationRevealed after Sūrat adh-Dhāriyāt

In the muṣḥaf it stands between Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87) and Sūrat al-Fajr (89).

2 · Its merit — the Prophet ﷺ recited it in the Jumuʿah prayer #

Rasūlullāh ﷺ used to recite this sūrah in the Jumuʿah prayer: in one rakʿah

سَبِّحِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

Sabbiḥi sma rabbika l-aʿlā — Sūrat al-Aʿlā (87) — and in the other rakʿah this sūrah, al-Ghāshiyah. There is a ḥadīth to this effect.

3 · The Makkan setting #

The sūrah belongs to the Makkan period, when the Quraysh were rejecting the Prophet ﷺ and harassing him. They denied the Hereafter. These āyāt came down to fix the reality of the ākhirah in their minds, over against the life of this world.

4 · How the sūrah is built — its four sections #

Look at the arrangement and the sūrah opens up. It begins with a question — the very first āyah comes in the form of one.

SectionĀyātWhat it does
First1Names the Day itself — al-Ghāshiyah, "that which envelops"
Second2 – 7The condition of the people of the Fire
Third8 – 16The condition of the believers, in Paradise
Fourth17 – 20A call to reflect on created things — the camel, the sky, the mountains, the earth
Then21 – 22What the Prophet's ﷺ own duty is — and is not
Last three24 – 26The reckoning — and that it is a matter that rests with Allah

Al-Ghāshiyah means that which envelops, that which covers everything over — and it is a name of the Day of Judgement. That Day is called by many names: Yawm al-Ākhirah, Yawm al-Qiyāmah, as-Sāʿah, and others; al-ghāshiyah is one of them, given to it in respect of everything being overwhelmed on it.

5 · Āyah 1 — the question #

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ

Hal atāka ḥadīthu l-ghāshiyah

"Has there come to you the report of the Overwhelming Event?"

WordMeaning
هَلْ"has…? / is it that…?" — an interrogative particle
أَتَىٰكَ"[it] came to you"
حَدِيثthe news, the report
ٱلْغَاشِيَةthe one that envelops, that covers everything over — the Day of Judgement

هَلْ is a ḥarf istifhām (حرف استفهام) — a particle that puts something as a question. You have already studied this in the grammar. There is another particle of the same kind: the hamzah (أ).

The class's comparison of hal and the hamzah was not recorded.

Whom is the question put to? Not to the ummah — it is put to the Prophet ﷺ directly: Allah asking him, "has it come to you?"

6 · Āyah 2 — the faces on that Day #

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ

Wujūhun yawmaʾidhin khāshiʿah

"Faces, on that Day, will be downcast."

WordMeaning
وُجُوهfaces — the plural; the singular is وَجْه wajh
يَوْمَئِذٍon that Day
خَاشِعَةhumbled, lowered, cast down

On that Day some faces — indeed many faces — will be lowered in humiliation.

7 · Āyah 3 — labouring, and worn out by it #

عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ

ʿĀmilatun nāṣibah

"Labouring, exhausted."

WordMeaning
عَامِلَةthe ones that laboured, that worked
نَّاصِبَةthe ones worn out, wearied by that labour

They toiled — but they were people who took what was wrong to be right and acted on it.

8 · Āyah 4 — the scorching Fire, and a grammar point #

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً

Taṣlā nāran ḥāmiyah

"They will enter to burn in a scorching Fire."

WordMeaning
تَصْلَىٰ"[she/they] will enter and burn" — a muḍāriʿ verb
نَارًاfire
حَامِيَةblazing, fiercely hot, burning up
The grammar to hold onto: حَامِيَة is a ṣifah — an adjective describing نَار — and that is why both words carry naṣb: nāran ḥāmiyatan. The adjective takes the case of the thing it describes. (This same rule comes back at āyah 24 — see §22.)

Why is taṣlā feminine, and not yaṣlā? Because its subject is وُجُوه — "faces", a plural, and this kind of plural is treated as muʾannath (feminine) singular. That is what puts the tāʾ on the front of the verb. Its māḍī is صَلِيَ ṣaliya.

9 · Āyah 5 — the boiling spring, and the majhūl #

تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ

Tusqā min ʿaynin āniyah

"They will be given to drink from a boiling spring."

تُسْقَىٰ is the muḍāriʿ majhūl — the passive present:

FormArabicMeaning
Māḍī (maʿrūf)سَقَى saqāhe gave [someone] to drink
Muḍāriʿ (maʿrūf)يَسْقِي yasqīhe gives / will give to drink
Muḍāriʿ majhūlتُسْقَىٰ tusqāshe/it will be given to drink
WordMeaning
مِنْfrom
عَيْنa spring
آنِيَةboiling

So: from a boiling spring, water will be given them to drink — they do not drink, they are made to drink.

10 · Āyah 6 — no food but ḍarīʿ #

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ

Laysa lahum ṭaʿāmun illā min ḍarīʿ

"They will have no food except from ḍarīʿ."

WordMeaning
لَيْسَthere is not
لَهُمْfor them
طَعَامfood
إِلَّاexcept
ضَرِيعa bitter thorny plant

They have no food at all except that — nothing else.

11 · Āyah 7 — food that does neither thing food is for #

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ

Lā yusminu wa-lā yughnī min jūʿ

"It neither nourishes nor avails against hunger."

WordMeaning
لَا يُسْمِنُit does not fatten — it puts no flesh on you, there is no nourishment in it
وَلَا يُغْنِىnor does it avail in the least
مِن جُوعٍagainst hunger
That is the punishment in it: the hunger never leaves, and no strength or growth ever comes from what they eat.

12 · Recap — everything so far is the people of the Fire #

All the āyāt up to here describe the people of the Fire — their state, and their food. What was said was wujūhun yawmaʾidhin — "faces on that Day", meaning some faces. And on that same Day there are other faces…

The class's explanation of āyāt 8 and 9 was not recorded.

13 · Āyah 10 — a lofty Garden #

فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ

Fī jannatin ʿāliyah

"In a lofty Garden."

WordMeaning
جَنَّةParadise, the Garden
عَالِيَةhigh, elevated, lofty

They will be in lofty gardens — an elevated place in Paradise. From here to āyah 16 the sūrah is describing the other party, after the people of the Fire.

14 · Āyah 11 — no vain talk, and the manfī muḍāriʿ #

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً

Lā tasmaʿu fīhā lāghiyah

"In it they will hear no vain talk."

WordMeaning
لَاغِيَةvain, frivolous, worthless talk

The verb: تَسْمَعُ is the muḍāriʿ of the māḍī سَمِعَ samiʿa, "to hear". Before it stands لَا, so this is a manfī — a negated muḍāriʿ: "will not hear." Not a single such word will they hear there.

15 · Āyah 12 — a flowing spring #

فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ

Fīhā ʿaynun jāriyah

"In it is a flowing spring."

WordMeaning
فِيهَاin it — that is, in Paradise
عَيْنa spring
جَارِيَةflowing, running — from جَرَى jarā, to run, to flow

A running spring — springs are there for them to drink from.

16 · Āyah 13 — couches raised high #

فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ

Fīhā sururun marfūʿah

"In it are couches raised high."

WordMeaning
سُرُرcouches, raised seats to recline on — the plural of سَرِير sarīr
مَرْفُوعَةraised, set high up — from رَفَعَ rafaʿa, to raise

17 · Āyah 14 — cups set ready #

وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ

Wa akwābun mawḍūʿah

"And cups set ready."

WordMeaning
فِيهَا"in it" — that ḍamīr (pronoun) refers back to Paradise
وَand, moreover
أَكْوَابcups, goblets — the plural of كُوب kūb
مَوْضُوعَةplaced, set out ready

Cups are set out ready for them to drink from.

18 · Āyah 15 — cushions in rows #

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ

Wa namāriqu maṣfūfah

"And cushions ranged in rows."

WordMeaning
نَمَارِقcushions
مَصْفُوفَةarranged in rows, set out in a line

19 · Āyah 16 — carpets spread out #

وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ

Wa zarābiyyu mabthūthah

"And carpets spread out."

WordMeaning
زَرَابِىّcarpets, rich rugs
مَبْثُوثَةspread out, laid out wide

20 · Āyāt 17-19 — look at the camel, the sky, the mountains #

The fourth section of the sūrah: the camel, the sky, the mountains and the earth.

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ

A-fa-lā yanẓurūna ilā l-ibili kayfa khuliqat

"Do they not then look at the camel — how it was created?"

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ

Wa ilā s-samāʾi kayfa rufiʿat

"And at the sky — how it was raised?"

وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ

Wa ilā l-jibāli kayfa nuṣibat

"And at the mountains — how they were set firm?"

WordMeaning
أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ"do they not look? will they not observe and consider?"
ٱلْإِبِلthe camel
كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْhow it was created
ٱلسَّمَاءthe sky
كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْhow it has been raised up [above them]
ٱلْجِبَالthe mountains — the plural of جَبَل jabal
كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْhow they have been set up and planted firm, fixed immovably

The class's explanation of āyah 20, the earth, was not recorded.

21 · Āyāt 21-23 — the Prophet's ﷺ duty, and its limit #

فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ

Fa-dhakkir, innamā anta mudhakkir

"So remind — you are only a reminder."

فَذَكِّرْ is the amr — the imperative: "So remind! So admonish!" And إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ — "you are only a reminder-giver." You give them good counsel; that is all.

لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ

Lasta ʿalayhim bi-muṣayṭir

"You are not a controller over them."

WordMeaning
لَّسْتَ"you are not" — from لَيْسَ laysa, a māḍī verb
بِمُصَيْطِرone who exercises authority over them, who compels them
The point of the pair: you are not set over them as one with power to force them. It is not for you to make them do it — you have no such authority over them.

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ

Illā man tawallā wa kafara

"Except him who turns away and disbelieves."

WordMeaning
إِلَّاexcept
مَنwhoever
تَوَلَّىٰturned his back, turned away [from the truth]
وَكَفَرَand disbelieved, rejected

The class's note on how لَيْسَ behaves, and the rest of its explanation of āyah 23, were not recorded.

22 · Āyah 24 — the greatest punishment, and the ṣifah rule again #

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ

Fa-yuʿadhdhibuhu llāhu l-ʿadhāba l-akbar

"Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment."

WordMeaning
يُعَذِّبُhe punishes, he torments
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُAllah will punish him
ٱلْعَذَابَthe punishment, the torment
ٱلْأَكْبَرَthe greatest, the very biggest
The grammar, and it is the same rule as āyah 4: ٱلْأَكْبَرَ has come as a ṣifah (صفة) to ٱلْعَذَاب. And that is why it carries the ending it does — because al-ʿadhāba has been put in the naṣb case (manṣūb), al-akbara, being its ṣifah, is put in naṣb as well. The adjective follows its mawṣūf.

23 · Āyāt 25-26 — the return, and the reckoning #

إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ

Inna ilaynā iyābahum

"Indeed, to Us is their return." — their coming back is to Us alone.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم

Thumma inna ʿalaynā ḥisābahum

"Then indeed, upon Us is their reckoning."

WordMeaning
إِيَابthe return, the coming back
ثُمَّthen, thereafter
حِسَابthe reckoning, the calling to account

Their questioning, their reckoning, is Ours. That is the sūrah's close.

24 · The duʿāʾ for an easy reckoning #

Generally in the Qurʾān — when an āyah of mercy came, Rasūlullāh ﷺ would ask [Allah] for it; when the āyāt spoke of the Fire, he would seek refuge from it. So when there is a reckoning as exacting as this one, what do we do?

اللَّهُمَّ يَسِّرْ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَنَا

Allāhumma yassir ʿalaynā ḥisābanā — "O Allah, make our reckoning easy for us."

اللَّهُمَّ حَاسِبْنِي حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا

Allāhumma ḥāsibnī ḥisāban yasīrā — "O Allah, call me to account with an easy reckoning."

Where you have heard these: the imams recite them in the Jumuʿah duʿāʾ — "that is exactly where it is recited." So there is a duʿāʾ for this: when the āyāt about the questioning and the reckoning come, this is what is asked for.

25 · What the sūrah is for #

#Point
1The duʿāʾs for an easy reckoning are themselves among the benefits to take from this sūrah — it is in order to make us ask for that easiest of reckonings that they are put before us
2Man, according to his own deeds, will be in the punishment of the Fire or in permanence in Paradise. That is what these āyāt are for — for the work of this world, and how it is to be lived
3The manner in which we live this dunyā is what is being asked about, and there is a life beyond this one. If we have done good deeds here, permanence in Paradise is ours
4We have to go to that place, and to be received there the deeds have to be done — the ʿamal. Everything done here is taken up and settled in the ākhirah: whatever we sow is what we will be given
5Reflecting on the creation — the camel, the sky, the mountains, the earth — lets us grasp in a reasoned, intellectual way Allah's power, His knowledge and wisdom, and His greatness
6"You are not a controller over them" applies to your own life. When something is commanded, is it compulsory that you make others do it? You do not have that authority — in your own household, with your wife and children, and likewise at work, your own business or the office
7You may convey; you may not compel. Whatever the disagreement, you have no right to force the next person. The punishing of those who reject is Allah's affair, and the rewards of the believers depend on Allah's will alone — it is Allah who looks into these matters on the Day of Qiyāmah
Cold recall for Sūrat al-Ghāshiyah (88) — the whole sūrah, āyāt 1-26. Cover the right column, read the Arabic, say the meaning. Then cover the left column and rebuild the Arabic from the English. The introduction card (Makkī, juzʾ 30, sūrah 88, 26 āyāt, the Jumuʿah pairing) and the grammar rules at the bottom matter as much as the words.

The rules to recite from memory #

RuleStatement
ḥarf istifhāmهَلْ puts a sentence as a question. The hamzah (أ) is another particle of the same kind.
Whom āyah 1 addressesThe Prophet ﷺ directly — not the ummah. Allah asking him, "has it come to you?"
ṣifah and its caseAn adjective takes the case of the thing it describes (mawṣūf). nāran is manṣūb → ḥāmiyatan is manṣūb; al-ʿadhāba is manṣūb → al-akbara is manṣūb. The same rule at āyah 4 and āyah 24
Why تَصْلَىٰ is feminineIts subject is وُجُوه, a plural, and this kind of plural is treated as muʾannath singular — hence taṣlā, not yaṣlā
majhūlتُسْقَىٰ is the muḍāriʿ majhūl of سَقَى — they do not drink, they are made to drink
manfīلَا before a muḍāriʿ makes it negated: لَا تَسْمَعُ — "will not hear"
The limit of the Prophet's ﷺ dutyفَذَكِّرْ — remind; إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ — you are only a reminder-giver; لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ — you are not a controller over them. Convey, do not compel
Where the punishing belongsإِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ · ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم — the return is to Allah and the reckoning is upon Him. The punishing of those who reject is His affair, not yours

Why reflect on the creationExamining the camel, the sky, the mountains, the earth lets you grasp in a reasoned way Allah's power, His knowledge and wisdom, and His greatness
Where "you are not a controller" bitesYour own household — wife, children — and your work. You may disagree; you have no right to force the next person
