Third Semester-2 Thafseer class (video 17) — Sūrat al-Balad (90), treated the way this subject always works: tafsīr lafẓī, the meaning of every word, plus the ṣarf (word-form) parse of nearly every verb. Scope: āyāt 1–16 only. The class ran out of time mid-āyah 16 — āyāt 17–20 were not taught and are not on this page. The paper tests word and phrase meanings and the translation, so drill the glosses and the ṣarf chains, not the themes.

1 · The sūrah at a glance

ItemValue
Nameal-Baladthe city / the town
NumberSūrah 90
TypeMakkī — revealed to the Prophet before the Hijrah
Place in the order of revelationAfter Sūrah Qāf, before Sūrat al-Ṭāriq
Size20 āyāt · 82 words (kalimāt) · 335 letters (ḥurūf) — letter counts differ slightly between the authorities
Other namesSūrah "Lā Uqsimu" (from its opening) · Sūrat al-ʿAqabah
Famous nameal-Balad — the one commonly used

Why it is called al-Balad: the word occurs in the very first āyahلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ. The balad sworn by is Makkah al-Mukarramah, the city the Prophet lived in and, in Islam, the most sacred city.

Central idea and the four sections

The central idea: human life is constituted of trials, and Allah has shown man two paths — good and evil; real success is for the one who has īmān and does righteous deeds.

  1. The oath by Makkah and the hardship of human life.
  2. Allah's favours (niʿmah) recalled — roughly āyāt 5 to 10.
  3. The steep path (al-ʿaqabah) — the hard road crossed by way of good deeds.
  4. The closing āyāt, contrasting the people of Paradise with the people of the Fire (not reached in this class).

2 · Āyah 1 — the oath by the city

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

Lā uqsimu bi-hādhā-l-balad"I swear by this city."

WordMeaning
لَآHere for emphasis (taʾkīd) — it strengthens the oath, it does not negate it. A second view: it stands for kallā, "no, it is not as you claim" — a refutation placed before the oath
أُقْسِمُI swear — first-person singular (mutakallim waḥdah / mufrad)
بِby
هَٰذَاthis
ٱلْبَلَدِthe city — i.e. Makkah

The two together, lā uqsimu, carry the meaning "I swear."

Ṣarf of أَقْسَمَ

FormArabicNote
MāḍīأَقْسَمَA four-letter (rubāʿī) māḍī verb
Muḍāriʿيُقْسِمُ
Maṣdarإِقْسَام
BābifʿālA three-letter root plus one extra letter, the hamzah, at the front — making four
Ism fāʿilمُقْسِمKasrah on the second-to-last letter
Ism mafʿūlمُقْسَمFatḥah on the second-to-last letter

3 · Āyah 2 — "and you are in this city"

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

Wa anta ḥillun bi-hādhā-l-balad"…while you are in a lawful state / dwelling in this city."

WordMeaning
وَand / while
أَنتَyou — the Prophet
حِلٌّthat which has been made lawful (ḥalāl); also carries the sense "dwelling, residing"
بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِin this city

Why "made lawful" is the point

4 · Āyah 3 — by the father and what he begot

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ

Wa wālidin wa mā walad"And by the father, and by what he begot."

WordMeaning
وَJoins onto the previous oath — another thing sworn by, not a new sentence
وَالِدٍthe one who begets — the father (ism fāʿil)
وَمَا وَلَدَand what he begot — the offspring he brought forth

The tafsīr given: this points to Ādam ʿalayhi-s-salām and all the human beings born from him — his descendants.

Ṣarf of وَلَدَ — the disappearing wāw

FormArabicNote
MāḍīوَلَدَThree-letter verb beginning with a wāw; "he begot"
MuḍāriʿيَلِدُBāb faʿala–yafʿilu (the ḍaraba pattern)
Maṣdarوِلَادَة"begetting, giving birth"
Amrلِدْ
Ism fāʿilوَالِد"the one who begets" — the father; exactly the word in the āyah
The rule to hold: with a verb whose first radical is a wāw, the wāw drops out in the muḍāriʿwaladayalidu, not yawlidu.

5 · Āyah 4 — man created in hardship

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ

Laqad khalaqnā-l-insāna fī kabad"We have certainly created man in hardship."

WordMeaning
لَقَدْlām + qad joined — gives certainty / emphasis: "indeed, most surely"
خَلَقْنَاWe created
ٱلْإِنسَٰنَman, the human being
فِىin
كَبَدٍhardship, toil

Ṣarf of خَلَقَ

FormArabic
Māḍīخَلَقَ
Muḍāriʿيَخْلُقُ — bāb faʿala–yafʿulu (the naṣara pattern)
Maṣdarخَلْق
Amrٱخْلُقْ
Ism fāʿilخَالِق
Ism mafʿūlمَخْلُوق
خَلَقْنَا khalaqnā is the mutakallim ("We created") form. Note that in the māḍī mutakallim the dual and the plural take the very same formkhalaqnā serves for both.

6 · Āyah 5 — "does he think no one has power over him?"

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ

A-yaḥsabu an lan yaqdira ʿalayhi aḥad"Does he think that no one will ever have power over him?"

WordMeaning
أَThe interrogative hamzah (hamzat al-istifhām) — the question marker prefixed to the verb
يَحْسَبُhe thinks / imagines — a muḍāriʿ verb
أَنThe lightened an (an mukhaffafah)an + verb is read as a maṣdar muʾawwal (it needs taʾwīl)
لَّنwill never
يَقْدِرَhave power / be able — in naṣb because of lan
عَلَيْهِover him
أَحَدٌanyone at all

The sense: does he imagine that no one whatsoever is able to take hold of him and punish him?

The rule: لَنْ before a muḍāriʿ changes the final letter's ḍammah (rafʿ) into a fatḥahyaqdirulan yaqdira. That is why lan is called a nāṣib, a particle that puts the verb into naṣb.

Ṣarf of حَسِبَ and قَدَرَ

Formحَسِبَقَدَرَ
Māḍīحَسِبَقَدَرَ
Muḍāriʿيَحْسَبُيَقْدِرُ — bāb faʿala–yafʿilu
Maṣdarحِسْبَانقُدْرَة (also qadar)
Amrٱحْسَبْٱقْدِرْ
Ism fāʿilحَاسِبقَادِر
Ism mafʿūlمَحْسُوبمَقْدُور

How the amr was derived: take the muḍāriʿ, drop the prefix letter; because what is left cannot begin with a sukūn, bring a hamzah at the startyaḥsabuٱحْسَبْ.

7 · Āyah 6 — the boast about squandered wealth

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا

Yaqūlu ahlaktu mālan lubadā"He says: I have destroyed piles of wealth."

WordMeaning
يَقُولُhe says
أَهْلَكْتُI destroyed / squandered
مَالًاwealth
لُّبَدًاa great heap, an abundance — piled up

Ṣarf of قَالَ and أَهْلَكَ

Formقَالَأَهْلَكَ
Māḍīقَالَهَلَكَ → with the added hamzah أَهْلَكَ, bāb ifʿāl
Muḍāriʿيَقُولُيُهْلِكُ
Maṣdarقَوْل
Amrقُلْ
Ism fāʿilقَائِل
Ism mafʿūlمَقُول

The ‑tu ending makes it first person: أَهْلَكْتُ ahlaktu, "I destroyed" — the same ending seen in naṣartu, qaʿadtu, akaltu, dhahabtu.

8 · Āyah 7 — "does he think no one saw him?"

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

A-yaḥsabu an lam yarahu aḥad"Does he think that no one has seen him?"

WordMeaning
أَيَحْسَبُdoes he think? — already parsed at āyah 5
أَنThe lightened an again — as in an lan yaqdira ʿalayhi aḥad
لَّمْdid not — puts the verb into jazm
يَرَsee — the final weak letter is deleted by the jazm
هُhim
أَحَدٌa single person, anyone

Split it out: lamyarahu; so لَمْ يَرَهُ = "did not see him."

Ṣarf of رَأَىٰ

FormArabic
Māḍīرَأَىٰ
Muḍāriʿيَرَىٰ — bāb faʿala–yafʿalu
Maṣdarرُؤْيَة (also raʾy)
Amrرَ
The two rules to memorise: when لَمْ enters a muḍāriʿ verb you apply jazm; when لَنْ enters it you apply naṣb. To apply jazm you remove the ḍammah from the final letter and put a sukūn in its place — and if the final letter is a weak letter (ḥarf ʿillah), you remove the letter altogether.

The same construction elsewhere

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ

أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ

Remember: the hamzah is one thing and lam is another — you may read them joined (a-lam) or take them apart.

9 · Āyah 8 — "have We not made for him two eyes?"

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ

A-lam najʿal lahu ʿaynayn"Have We not made for him two eyes?"

WordMeaning
أَThe interrogative hamzah — it is what turns the statement into a question (istifhām)
لَمْ نَجْعَلWe did not makenajʿalunajʿal, jazm on the final letter because of lam
لَّهُۥfor him
عَيْنَيْنِtwo eyes — the dual (tathniyah / muthannā) of عَيْن, "one eye"

Ṣarf of جَعَلَ

FormArabic
Māḍīجَعَلَ
Muḍāriʿيَجْعَلُ — bāb faʿala–yafʿalu
Maṣdarجَعْل
Amrٱجْعَلْ
Ism fāʿilجَاعِل
Ism mafʿūlمَجْعُول
The nūn rule (exam-worthy): when jazm is applied, the nūn of the verb's ending is removedyajʿalūnalam yajʿalū. Two forms keep their nūn: the feminine plural, third person لَمْ يَجْعَلْنَ and second person لَمْ تَجْعَلْنَ. Every other nūn drops; those two stay.

10 · Āyah 9 — a tongue and two lips

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

Wa lisānan wa shafatayn"…and a tongue, and two lips?"

WordMeaning
وَand
لِسَانًاa tongue
شَفَتَيْنِtwo lips — the dual of شَفَة, "a lip"

Did He not make these for him too?

11 · Āyah 10 — the two paths

وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ

Wa hadaynāhu-n-najdayn"And We showed him the two paths."

WordMeaning
وَand
هَدَيْنَاWe guided / We showed
هُhim
ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِthe two paths / two highways — the dual again

The two paths are that of good and that of evil.

Ṣarf of هَدَىٰ

FormArabic
Māḍīهَدَىٰهَدَيْنَا is its māḍī mutakallim (plural) form
Muḍāriʿيَهْدِي — bāb faʿala–yafʿilu
Maṣdarهِدَايَة
Amrٱهْدِ
Ism fāʿilهَادِي

You meet the amr of this very verb in Sūrat al-Fātiḥah:

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

12 · Āyah 11 — but he did not attempt the steep climb

فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ

Fa-lā-qtaḥama-l-ʿaqabah"But he has not attempted the steep ascent."

WordMeaning
فَbut / so
لَاnot
ٱقْتَحَمَhe attempted / plunged into the hard climb
ٱلْعَقَبَةَthe steep mountain pass, the hard climb — the difficult road of good deeds

Ṣarf of ٱقْتَحَمَ

FormArabic
Māḍīٱقْتَحَمَ — bāb iftiʿāl
Maṣdarٱقْتِحَام
Ism fāʿilمُقْتَحِم
Ism mafʿūlمُقْتَحَم

13 · Āyah 12 — "and what will make you know what the ʿaqabah is?"

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ

Wa mā adrāka mā-l-ʿaqabah"And what will make you know what the steep ascent is?"

WordMeaning
وَand
مَآ أَدْرَىٰكَwhat has informed you / what will make you know?
مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُwhat is al-ʿaqabah?

Ṣarf of أَدْرَىٰ

FormArabic
Māḍīأَدْرَىٰ — a four-letter (rubāʿī) verb, bāb ifʿāl
Muḍāriʿيُدْرِي
Maṣdarإِدْرَاء
Ism fāʿilمُدْرِي
Ism mafʿūlمُدْرَىٰ

14 · Āyāt 13–16 — what the steep ascent actually is

Āyah 13 — freeing a slave

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

Fakku raqabah"The freeing of a slave."

WordMeaning
فَكُّreleasing, setting free
رَقَبَةٍliterally a neck — i.e. a slave

What is the steep ascent? It is to set a slave free.

Āyah 14 — or feeding on a day of hunger

أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌ فِى يَوْمٍ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍ

Aw iṭʿāmun fī yawmin dhī masghabah"…or feeding on a day of severe hunger."

WordMeaning
أَوْor
إِطْعَٰمٌfeeding — the maṣdar of أَطْعَمَ, "to feed"
فِى يَوْمٍon a day
ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍof severe hunger — a day of famine

So the ʿaqabah is either freeing a slave or feeding the hungry on a day of famine.

Āyah 15 — an orphan of near kin

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

Yatīman dhā maqrabah"…an orphan of near kinship."

WordMeaning
يَتِيمًاan orphan
ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍone who is a near relative

Whom does one feed? An orphan who is a close relation, on a day of hunger.

Āyah 16 — or a needy person

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا

Aw miskīnan"…or a needy person…"

WordMeaning
أَوْor
مِسْكِينًاa needy person
The class ends here, mid-āyah 16. The remaining words of āyah 16 (ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ, "in the dust") and āyāt 17–20 were not taught in this lecture — nothing on this page covers them, and they are not examined from this class.

What this class did NOT cover

Cold-recall drill for Sūrat al-Balad, āyāt 1–16 only. Cover the right column, read the Arabic, say the meaning. Then cover the left column and rebuild the Arabic from the English. The ṣarf chains (māḍī → muḍāriʿ → maṣdar → amr → ism fāʿil → ism mafʿūl) and the lam / lan rules are the other half of the paper.

The grammar rules to recite from memory

RuleStatement
لَمْ on a muḍāriʿApplies jazm — ḍammah off the final letter, sukūn in its place; the verb takes a past meaning
لَنْ on a muḍāriʿApplies naṣb — the final ḍammah becomes a fatḥah; lan is a nāṣib
Weak final letter + jazmThe weak letter is deleted altogether: yarālam yara(hu)
First-radical wāwThe wāw drops in the muḍāriʿ: waladayalidu
The nūn at jazmEvery ending-nūn drops (yajʿalūnalam yajʿalū) except the two feminine plurals لَمْ يَجْعَلْنَ and لَمْ تَجْعَلْنَ
قَدْ before a māḍīMeans "certainly, definitely"
Ism fāʿil vs ism mafʿūlKasrah on the second-to-last letter = doer; fatḥah = one done to (مُقْسِم / مُقْسَم)
