Thafseer Lafzi 2 — Sūrat ash-Shams (91) — word by word سُورَة الشَّمْس

The 15 āyāt of Sūrat ash-Shams word by word · the eight opening oaths (sun, its brightness, moon, day, night, sky, earth, soul) · the answer of the oath — qad aflaḥa man zakkāhā / wa-qad khāba man dassāhā · the Thamūd passage and the she-camel · full ṣarf paradigms for every verb (talā, jallā, ghashiya, banā, sawwā, alhama, aflaḥa, zakkā, khāba, dassā, kadhdhaba, inbaʿatha, ʿaqara, khāfa) · wāw al-qasam, muʾannath samāʿī, shamsiyyah vs qamariyyah, the fāʾ of sequence, lāzim vs mutaʿaddī. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

Second Semester-2 Thafseer class (video 16). Tafsīr Lafẓī of Sūrat ash-Shams (91) — the whole sūrah taken word by word, with the full ṣarf paradigm drawn out of every verb in it. The class opened by recalling last week's sūrah (al-Layl, 92) and then moved straight into ash-Shams. What the paper tests here is the meaning of each word and the translation of each āyah, plus the paradigm of each verb — so drill those first.

0 · Recap of the previous class (context only)

The class began by noting that last time they covered the sūrah that begins وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰSūrat al-Layl (92). Today's sūrah is the next one in the working order, Sūrat ash-Shams (91). Nothing more of al-Layl was re-taught.

1 · The sūrah at a glance

ItemWhat the class gave
NameSūrat ash-Shams — named from its first āyah, وَالشَّمْسِ
Meaning of the nameash-Shams = the sun
TypeMakkī — revealed before the migration from Makkah to Madīnah, and in the early period of the Makkan mission, while waḥy was coming down
Order of revelation (tartīb an-nuzūl)after Sūrat al-Qadr, before Sūrat al-Burūj
Muṣḥaf orderchapter 91
Measurements15 āyāt · 54 words · 247 letters
Theme (mawḍūʿ)tazkiyat an-nafs — purification of one's own soul; whoever purifies himself is the one who succeeds
Second stranda warning delivered through the history of the people of Thamūd
Occasion of revelation (sabab an-nuzūl)none specific — revealed generally
The society addresseda time when worship of idols and images was widespread and a society that rejected the Prophet
A special feature of the sūrah the lecturer pointed at on screen — all 15 āyāt end in هَا (ḍuḥāhā, talāhā, jallāhā, yaghshāhā … every single one). Everything he marked in red was a verb, and every one of those verbs is run through its paradigm in §7.

2 · The eight opening oaths — verses 1-8

The first eight āyāt are all oaths. Allah swears by one thing after another, and He does not do this for nothing — the longer the run of oaths, the weightier the matter that follows.

Āyah 1

وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحَاهَا

"By the sun and its morning brightness."

WordMeaningGrammar note
وَby (oath)The wāw al-qasam — the ḥarf used to swear an oath. The ism after it goes into the jarr case (majrūr)
الشَّمْسِthe sunmajrūr because of the wāw al-qasam. Feminine — see the muʾannath samāʿī note below
وَandḥarf
ضُحَاthe morning brightness / forenoon lightism
هَاitsḍamīr (pronoun) — it refers back to الشَّمْس, the sun

Three pieces in وَضُحَاهَا — a ḥarf (wa), an ism (ḍuḥā), and a ḍamīr (hā). Take them apart that way for every word of this shape in the sūrah.

Why is شَمْس feminine? Normally you spot a feminine ism by its tāʾ marbūṭah — but not always. Some words are feminine simply because that is how the Arabs used them; this is muʾannath samāʿī (feminine by usage/hearing), attested in the speech of the Arabs of that time. شَمْس carries no tāʾ marbūṭah, yet it is feminine — which is why the pronoun هَا is used for it here and throughout the sūrah.

Āyah 2

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَاهَا

"And by the moon when it follows it [the sun]."

WordMeaningGrammar note
وَandNot a second oath particle — only the first wāw (āyah 1) is the oath particle; the rest are joined onto it (ʿaṭf)
الْقَمَرِthe moonlikewise majrūr
إِذَاwhenḥarf
تَلَاit followed / it followsfiʿl māḍī. تَلَا and not تَلَتْ because قَمَر is masculine (mudhakkar)
هَاitthe pronoun does not refer to the moon — it refers to الشَّمْس, the sun

What "following" means here — the moon's light comes from the sun. The light is the sun's; the moon takes it and reflects it, and so it comes along behind it.

Āyah 3

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّاهَا

"And by the day when it reveals it [the sun] in its full brightness."

WordMeaningGrammar note
وَandjoined on (ʿaṭf)
النَّهَارِthe daymajrūr
إِذَاwhenḥarf
جَلَّاit displayed / revealed / made it plainfiʿl māḍī, four letters
هَاitthe pronoun, back to the sun

Āyah 4

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَاهَا

"And by the night when it covers it."

WordMeaningGrammar note
وَandʿaṭf
اللَّيْلِthe nightmajrūr
إِذَاwhenḥarf
يَغْشَاit covers / enshroudsfiʿl muḍāriʿ — note the shift; āyāt 2 and 3 had a māḍī after إِذَا, this one a muḍāriʿ. After إِذَا either can come
هَاitthe sun

Āyah 5

وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا بَنَاهَا

"And by the sky, and by Him who built it" — by the heaven and the One who fashioned and ordered it.

WordMeaningGrammar note
وَandʿaṭf
السَّمَاءِthe sky / the heavenmajrūr
وَمَاand [by] the One whoمَا here carries the sense "the One who"
بَنَاHe builtfiʿl māḍī
هَاitthe sky

Āyah 6

وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَاهَا

"And by the earth, and by Him who spread it out" — who spread it wide.

WordMeaningGrammar note
الْأَرْضِthe earthmajrūr. الْأَرْض is qamariyyah (the hamzah is a qamariyyah letter)
وَمَاand [by] the One whoas in āyah 5
طَحَاHe spread outfiʿl māḍī
هَاitthe earth
Why so many oaths? By āyah 6 we are still in the oaths — the actual subject has not yet arrived. See how many things He swears by before coming to the point. The matter He is about to state must therefore be extremely important. That is the thing to notice.

Āyah 7

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا

"And by the soul, and by Him who proportioned it" — who shaped and balanced it.

WordMeaningGrammar note
نَفْسٍa soul / the soulmajrūr. نَفْس is feminine (muʾannath) — which is why the pronoun comes as هَا in سَوَّاهَا
وَمَاand [by] the One who
سَوَّاHe shaped, proportioned, balancedfiʿl māḍī, four letters
هَاitthe nafs

Āyah 8

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا

"Then He inspired it [to know] its wickedness and its God-consciousness."

WordMeaningGrammar note
فَthenthe fāʾ of sequence (tartīb) — see below
أَلْهَمَHe inspired, He promptedfiʿl māḍī, four letters
هَاitthe nafs (feminine)
فُجُورَwickedness, immorality, corruptionism
هَاitsof the nafs
وَandḥarf
تَقْوَاGod-consciousness, pietyism
هَاitsof the nafs

He taught the soul both its corruption and its piety, so that it would know the two apart.

The fāʾ of sequence (fāʾ at-tartīb). It fixes the order: what is mentioned before it happened first, what comes after it happened afterwards — and it works the same with nouns (jāʾa Zaydun fa-ʿAmrun — Zayd came, then ʿAmr). Applied here — the shaping (سَوَّاهَا) came first, and then the inspiring (أَلْهَمَهَا) of good and evil.

3 · The answer of the oath — verses 9-10

The oaths are finished at the eighth āyah. Now comes the point (jawāb al-qasam).

Āyah 9

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا

"Truly successful is the one who purifies it."

WordMeaningGrammar note
قَدْcertainly, definitely, assuredlyقَدْ before a māḍī verb gives taḥqīq — it confirms the statement
أَفْلَحَhe has succeeded, he has prosperedfiʿl māḍī
مَنwhoever
زَكَّاhe purifiedfiʿl māḍī
هَاitthe nafswhoever purifies his own soul

See how important tazkiyat an-nafs is — after eight āyāt of oaths by so many things, this is what He comes to. When that many oaths are sworn, the matter that follows is of the highest importance.

Āyah 10

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا

"And truly lost is the one who corrupts it" — who buries that soul away under sin.

WordMeaningGrammar note
وَanda conjunction here
قَدْcertainlytaḥqīq before the māḍī
خَابَhe has failed, he is ruined, he has lostfiʿl māḍī — a lāzim (intransitive) verb, so no ism mafʿūl is formed from it
مَنwhoever
دَسَّاhe buried it away, he stunted it, he corrupted itfiʿl māḍī, four letters
هَاitthe nafs
Grammar digression the class made here — lāzim vs mutaʿaddī. A verb's meaning divides into lāzim (intransitive) and mutaʿaddī (transitive). In a jumlah you identify three parts — the fiʿl (verb), the fāʿil (doer) and the mafʿūl (the thing acted upon). Some verbs simply take no object — dhahaba (he went) has a doer (Aḥmad dhahaba) but nothing can be "gone". Compare naṣara Zaydun Khālidan — Zayd helped Khālid — where Zayd is the fāʿil and Khālid the mafʿūl. A lāzim verb has no passive (majhūl) and no ism mafʿūl (naṣara → nuṣira, "he was helped"; but dhahaba has no passive). خَابَ is exactly that — the ruin is his own, there is no object, so no ism mafʿūl.

4 · The people of Thamūd — verses 11-15

Āyah 11

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا

"The people of Thamūd denied [the truth] through their transgression."

WordMeaningGrammar note
كَذَّبَتْshe/they denied, cried liesfiʿl māḍī — feminine form. Why feminine? Because ثَمُود is a tribe/community, a name of a people, and such collective nouns are treated as feminine
ثَمُودُThamūdthe fāʿil
بِby / through / because ofḥarf
طَغْوَاtransgression, rebellious excessism
هَاtheirthe pronoun refers back to ثَمُود, treated as feminine

Whom did they deny? The people of Thamūd denied the prophet sent to them — Ṣāliḥ عليه السلام. It was because of their own rebellious excess that they cried lies.

The exact form used in the Qurʾān. In the māḍī, the dual takes no nūn — kadhdhabā; the plural is kadhdhabū; the feminine is kadhdhabat. The form in this āyah is كَذَّبَتْ — māḍī, third person (ghāʾib), feminine (muʾannath), singular (mufrad).

Āyah 12

إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا

"When the most wretched of them rose up."

WordMeaningGrammar note
إِذِwhen
انبَعَثَhe rose up, he was sent forthfiʿl māḍī on the pattern infaʿala
أَشْقَاthe most wretched, the most miserable — the most wicked man among themthe afʿal (superlative) form from shaqiyy
هَاof themback to Thamūd
Tajwīd aside — the nūn in انبَعَثَ. The nūn sākinah is followed by a bāʾ, so it is converted to a mīm in pronunciation. The rule is iqlāb — a nūn sākinah or a tanwīn followed by a bāʾ turns into a mīm.

Āyah 13

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا

"So the Messenger of Allah said to them — 'the she-camel of Allah, and her turn at the water!'" i.e. leave Allah's she-camel be, and her drink.

WordMeaningGrammar note
فَقَالَso he saidfāʾ + fiʿl māḍī
لَهُمْto them
رَسُولُ اللَّهِthe Messenger of Allah — here Ṣāliḥ عليه السلام
نَاقَةَa she-camelism
نَاقَةَ اللَّهِthe she-camel of Allah
وَandḥarf
سُقْيَاthe giving of water to drink; her drinking turnism — compare سِقَايَة (siqāyah), the provision of drinking water to the pilgrims at Hajj
هَاherthe she-camel

The background the class gave. The people of Ṣāliḥ عليه السلامThamūd — were a powerful people, who carved out the mountains and made their dwellings inside them. That she-camel was brought into being as a sign for them, and the water was shared out by turns — one day the camel's, the next day theirs. On the camel's day they were to let her drink and leave her alone, and not harm her. Only a few conditions were laid on them.

Āyah 14

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا

"So they denied him and hamstrung her; therefore their Lord brought down upon them a crushing destruction for their sin, and levelled them all alike."

WordMeaningGrammar note
فَكَذَّبُوهُso they denied himmāḍī, plural + the object pronoun هُ
فَعَقَرُوهَاand they hamstrung her — they slaughtered the camelmāḍī, plural + هَا
فَدَمْدَمَso He brought down a crushing destructionfiʿl māḍī
عَلَيْهِمْupon them
رَبُّهُمtheir Lord
بِذَنبِهِمْbecause of their sinthe bāʾ here is causal — it was their sin that brought it
فَسَوَّاهَاand He levelled it / themthe same verb سَوَّى as in āyah 7, here of levelling them flat

Only one man did the deed — but all were destroyed. In that people, not everyone came forward. It was one wicked man (or a small party) who actually hamstrung the camel — but the rest did not stop him. That is why the punishment came down equally on them all: the community consented to the crime by its silence and so shared in it. By the same logic, those who did try to prevent it would not be given this punishment.

Āyah 15

5 · Shamsiyyah and qamariyyah letters

The two words at the head of this sūrah — شَمْس and قَمَر — are the very words the tajwīd rule is named after, which is how to remember it.

CaseWhat happens to the lām of the alif-lāmExample from this sūrah
Qamariyyahthe lām IS pronounced and heardالْقَمَر (āyah 2), الْأَرْض (āyah 6)
Shamsiyyahthe lām is NOT pronounced — it is assimilated into the next letter, which takes a shaddahالشَّمْس (āyah 1), النَّهَار (āyah 3)

6 · How to run a verb (the paradigm order)

The lecturer insisted on the order, and on giving the whole set for every verb.

  1. māḍī (past) — then
  2. muḍāriʿ (present-future) — never skip to the maṣdar before giving these two
  3. maṣdar (verbal noun)
  4. amr (imperative)
  5. ism fāʿil (doer)
  6. ism mafʿūl (the one acted upon)

7 · Every verb in the sūrah, with its paradigm

Dashes mark what the class did not give (or what the recording lost) — do not fill them in by guess.

8 · The lessons the class drew at the end

  1. A person's end is his own doing. A man's final outcome is determined by his own choice, his own will and his own effort — hence spending in the path of Allah, and purifying the soul with eagerness. The soul must be purified; that is what the sūrah presses on us.
  2. The law of consequences. Good for those who do good, evil for those who do evil — settled as a decree. You never see good come from evil; and if you keep doing good, evil will not come to you.
  3. Expect accountability, and learn from the earlier communities — as here, from Thamūd.
  4. Allah is perfectly just. Their case is named for exactly that reason, so that we take the rule from it.

9 · Closing counsel on the Qurʾān (not lesson material)

The class ended with advice on a daily relationship with the Qurʾān — the hadith of the Prophet not sleeping until he had recited Sūrat as-Sajdah and Sūrat al-Mulk; setting a daily portion; targeting at least one juzʾ a day (a juzʾ is about twenty pages, so a full Qurʾān in a month), holding yourself to account (muḥāsabah), and reciting with understanding so that the Qurʾān answers the problems of daily life. Everyone has the same 24 hours — adjust half an hour for it.

What this class did NOT settle

Cold-recall drill. Cover the right-hand column and give the meaning; then cover the left and produce the Arabic. The word-glosses and the verb paradigms are the whole paper — the sūrah facts and the tajwīd rules are the easy marks.
