Lesson 1 — Falaq · Ikhlas · Nas · Masadopen lesson →
One row per surah — this is your crib-sheet view. Then the memory hooks.
| Surah | Name means | Key word (lafzi) | Theme keyword | Revelation hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| الفلق Al-Falaq #113 | Daybreak | الْفَلَقِ the daybreak | Refuge from external evils | Mu'awwidhatayn pair (with An-Nas) |
| الإخلاص Al-Ikhlas #112 | Purity / sincerity | الصَّمَدُ the Eternal Refuge | Tawheed — Allah's Oneness | Answer to “describe your Lord's lineage” · = ⅓ Quran |
| الناس An-Nas #114 | Mankind | الْخَنَّاسِ the retreating whisperer | Refuge from internal whisperer | Mu'awwidhatayn pair (with Al-Falaq) |
| المسد Al-Masad #111 | Palm fibre (rope) | تَبَّتْ perish! | Abu Lahab's ruin — wealth can't save | Abu Lahab's insult at the Safa warning: “تَبًّا لَكَ” |
Memory hooks
- Falaq vs Nas: Falaq = outside evils (creation, darkness, sorcery, envy) · Nas = inside evil (the whisperer). Outer enemy → 1 divine attribute (Rabb); inner enemy → 3 attributes (Rabb, Malik, Ilah) — the hidden enemy needs stronger protection.
- All four are Makki. In fact every surah in this syllabus is Makki except Al-Bayyinah, Az-Zalzalah (lesson 3) and An-Nasr (lesson 6) — remember those three and answer everything else “Makki”.
- The protection routine: Ikhlas + Falaq + Nas recited after every fard salah and before sleep (blow into palms, wipe body 3×, head and face first).
- Ikhlas = ⅓ of the Quran in reward; it answers “describe your Lord” in 4 verses: One · Eternal Refuge · no parent or child · no equal.
- Masad irony: Abu Lahab means “father of flame” — and his punishment is نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ, a fire of flame. His curse (“may you perish”) was turned back on him: تَبَّتْ.
- Whisperer's weakness: الْخَنَّاس = the one who retreats — he withdraws the moment Allah is remembered.
- Tafseer definition skeleton: language = clarify/uncover (فَسَّرَ) · technical = science + meanings of Allah's speech + human capacity + helper sciences.
Lesson 2 — Fatiha · Duha · Sharh · Teenopen lesson →
One row per surah — your crib-sheet view. Then the memory hooks.
| Surah | Name means | Key word (lafzi) | Theme keyword | Revelation hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| الفاتحة Al-Fatiha #1 | The Opening | الْحَمْدُ all praise | Essence of the Quran — praise + guidance | 1st complete surah · recited every rak‘ah · = Umm al-Kitab |
| الضحى Ad-Duha #93 | Morning brightness | مَا وَدَّعَكَ He has not forsaken you | Consolation — “He has not forsaken you” | Revelation paused; idolaters mocked → reassurance |
| الشرح Ash-Sharh #94 | Expansion / relief | الْعُسْرِ ・ يُسْرًا hardship ・ ease | With hardship comes ease | Consolation pair with Ad-Duha |
| التين At-Teen #95 | The Fig | أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ the best form | Man in best form · dignity · justice | Oath by fig, olive, Sinai, secure Makkah |
Memory hooks
- All four are Makki. In the whole syllabus only Al-Bayyinah & Az-Zalzalah (lesson 3) and An-Nasr (lesson 6) are Madani — answer everything else “Makki”.
- Fatiha split in half: hadith qudsi — “I divided the prayer between Me and My servant.” Verses 1–4 = Allah's praise; verses 5–7 = the servant's request (worship + guidance).
- Duha & Sharh = the consolation pair. Duha: “He has not forsaken you” after revelation paused. Sharh: “with hardship comes ease.”
- One hardship, two eases: مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا is repeated — the single hardship (al-‘usr) is outnumbered by the two eases (yusran).
- Duha's three favours → three commands: orphan→shelter (don't oppress), astray→guide, poor→enrich (don't repel the beggar); and proclaim Allah's blessing.
- Teen's four oaths: fig + olive + Mount Sinai + secure Makkah → man made فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ (best mould), then أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ (lowest) unless he has faith + good deeds.
- Fatiha's other names: Umm al-Kitab, as-Sab‘ al-Mathani (the 7 oft-repeated), al-Qur'an al-‘Azeem, ash-Shifa, al-Hamd, as-Salah.
Lesson 3 — Alaq · Qadr · Bayyinah · Zalzalahopen lesson →
One row per surah — your crib-sheet view. Then the memory hooks.
| Surah | Name means | Key word (lafzi) | Theme keyword | Revelation hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| العلق Al-Alaq #96 · Makki | The clinging clot | اقْرَأْ Read! | “Read!” — knowledge & the pen | vv1–5 = the FIRST revelation (Cave of Hira); later vv = Abu Jahl |
| القدر Al-Qadr #97 · Makki | Night of Decree / Power | لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ the Night of Decree | Laylat al-Qadr > 1000 months | The night the Quran began to descend (Ramadan) |
| البينة Al-Bayyinah #98 · Madani | The clear proof | الْبَيِّنَةُ the clear proof | Sincere worship = the upright religion | People of the Book + polytheists; best vs worst of creation |
| الزلزلة Az-Zalzalah #99 · Madani | The earthquake | مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ an atom's weight | Atom's weight of good/evil seen | Earth quakes & testifies on the Day of Resurrection |
Memory hooks
- Two of the three Madani surahs live here: البينة (#98) and الزلزلة (#99) — consecutive numbers, easy to pair. The third is النصر (#110, lesson 6); everything else is Makki.
- Al-Alaq = the beginning of the Quran. First word ever revealed: اقْرَأْ (“Read!”). Then “taught by the pen” — Islam's love of knowledge from day one.
- Arrogance trigger: أَنْ رَآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ — man transgresses when he thinks he is self-sufficient. Cure (v19): وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِبْ — prostrate and draw near.
- One night > 1000 months. Laylat al-Qadr's reward (~83 years) — angels + the Ruh descend, “peace until dawn.” Seek it in the last 10 nights of Ramadan.
- Bayyinah's “upright religion” = 3 things: sincere worship of Allah (مُخْلِصِينَ) + prayer + zakat. Believers = خَيْرُ الْبَرِيَّةِ (best of creation), disbelievers = شَرُّ الْبَرِيَّةِ.
- Zalzalah's signature verses: مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ … شَرًّا يَرَهُ — an atom of good or evil, both seen. The earth will testify.
Lesson 4 — Adiyat · Qari'ah · Takathur · Asropen lesson →
One row per surah — your crib-sheet view. Then the memory hooks.
| Surah | Name means | Key word (lafzi) | Theme keyword | Revelation hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| العاديات Al-Adiyat #100 | The chargers / racers | الْعَادِيَاتِ the chargers | Man is ungrateful & loves wealth | Oath by warhorses charging into battle at dawn |
| القارعة Al-Qari'ah #101 | The striking calamity | الْقَارِعَةُ the striking calamity | The balance (mizan) of deeds | People like moths, mountains like fluffed wool |
| التكاثر At-Takathur #102 | Rivalry in increase | التَّكَاثُرُ rivalry in increase | Materialism distracts till death | Boasting of wealth/numbers, counting the dead at graves |
| العصر Al-Asr #103 | Time | خُسْرٍ loss | Mankind in loss except four | Oath by time; ash-Shafi‘i: this surah alone would suffice |
Memory hooks
- All four are Makki and run #100→#103 in order — Adiyat, Qari'ah, Takathur, Asr. Learn them as a consecutive block.
- Adiyat's horse-oath → man's flaw: the loyal warhorse strains for its rider, yet man is كَنُود (ungrateful) and لِحُبِّ الْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ (greedy for wealth).
- Qari'ah = the scales. Heavy scale (ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ) → pleasant life; light scale (خَفَّتْ) → هَاوِيَة, the Abyss. Images: people = scattered moths, mountains = fluffed wool.
- Takathur's three certainties: ‘ilm al-yaqin (knowledge), ‘ayn al-yaqin (sight) — you will SEE the Hellfire — then questioned about النَّعِيم (every blessing). Hook: counting at the graves.
- Al-Asr = the 4-point success formula: (1) iman, (2) good deeds, (3) enjoin truth, (4) enjoin patience. Everyone else is فِي خُسْرٍ (in loss).
- Resurrection name-bank: الْقَارِعَة (the striking calamity) and الْجَحِيم / هَاوِيَة / نَارٌ حَامِيَة are all Hell/Judgement vocabulary in this lesson.
Lesson 5 — Feel · Quraysh · Humazahopen lesson →
A crib row for each of this lesson's three surahs, then the memory hooks. The complete
23-surah crib and the all-surah battery test are in lesson 6 → lesson 7.
This lesson's three surahs
| Surah | Name means | Key word (lafzi) | Theme keyword | Revelation hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| الفيل #105 | The Elephant | أَبَابِيلَ in flocks | Allah destroyed Abraha's elephant army (ababil birds) | The cause — set up before Quraysh's blessing |
| قريش #106 | The tribe Quraysh | إِيلَافِ accustomed security | Gratitude for security & the winter/summer caravans → worship the Lord of this House | The blessing that follows Al-Feel |
| الهمزة #104 | The Slanderer | هُمَزَةٍ لُمَزَةٍ slanderer ・ backbiter | Woe to the backbiter who hoards wealth → al-Ḥuṭamah (the Crusher) | Humazah (insult to the face) vs Lumazah (backbite in absence) |
Memory hooks
- Only THREE Madani in the whole syllabus: البينة (#98) + الزلزلة (#99) + النصر (#110, lesson 6). Everything else is Makki — answer “Makki” unless it's one of these three.
- Feel → Quraysh = cause → blessing. Allah destroyed the elephant army (Feel) → so Makkah and Quraysh's caravans stayed safe (Quraysh). In some recitations they are read as one unit.
- Quraysh's two gifts: أَطْعَمَهُمْ مِنْ جُوعٍ (fed against hunger) + آمَنَهُمْ مِنْ خَوْفٍ (secured from fear) — provision & safety.
- Humazah's pair: هُمَزَة = insult to the face · لُمَزَة = backbite in absence. Punishment = الْحُطَمَة, the Crusher (a name of Hell).
- “First” superlatives: Al-Alaq = first revelation · Al-Fatiha = first complete surah · Laylat al-Qadr = night the Quran first descended.
- Two “equals” facts: Al-Ikhlas = ⅓ of the Quran · Laylat al-Qadr = better than 1000 months.
- Occasions worth memorising: Masad (Abu Lahab's insult at Safa) · Falaq/Nas (sorcery / refuge) · Ikhlas (“describe your Lord”) · Duha (revelation paused) · Alaq (Cave of Hira / Abu Jahl) · Feel (Year of the Elephant) · Quraysh (safe caravans).
Lesson 6 — Maʿun · Kawthar · Kafirun · Nasropen lesson →
A crib row for each of these four surahs, then the memory hooks. The
complete 23-surah crib and the all-surah battery test are in lesson 7.
This lesson's four surahs
| Surah | Name means | Key word (lafzi) | Theme keyword | Revelation hook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| الماعون #107 | Small kindnesses / aid | الْمَاعُونَ small kindnesses | Faith proven by deeds — orphan, poor, no riyaa | Whoever denies Judgement abuses the orphan & prays for show |
| الكوثر #108 | Abundance | الْكَوْثَرَ abundance | Allah's gift to the Prophet ﷺ; pray & sacrifice | al-ʿAs called the Prophet ﷺ “abtar” — the hater is abtar |
| الكافرون #109 | The disbelievers | الْكَافِرُونَ the disbelievers | Total baraaʾah from shirk — no compromise | Quraysh offered to swap worship year-by-year — rejected |
| النصر #110 | The Help / Victory | أَفْوَاجًا in crowds | Meet victory with tasbih & istighfar | Madani · Farewell Hajj · sign of the Prophet's ﷺ death |
Memory hooks
- Three “occasion” surahs to never miss: Al-Masad (Abu Lahab's insult), Al-Kawthar (al-ʿAs called the Prophet ﷺ abtar), Al-Kafirun (Quraysh's worship-swap offer). Examiners love the reason for revelation.
- Al-Maʿun pairing: denying the Judgement (يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّين) shows up as abusing the orphan + ignoring the poor + praying for show + withholding small aid.
- Kawthar = shortest surah (3 verses). Its command: فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ — pray and sacrifice for Allah alone (vs idolaters' sacrifice).
- Kafirun = the surah of baraaʾah (disassociation). Memory: “to you yours, to me mine” (لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ) — no compromise on Tawheed.
- Nasr = the farewell. Victory (نصر + فتح) → people enter Islam أَفْوَاجًا → respond with سَبِّحْ + اسْتَغْفِرْ. It hinted the Prophet's ﷺ mission was finishing.
- Mu'awwidhat protection set: Ikhlas + Falaq + Nas (after every fard salah & before sleep); Kafirun is also recommended before sleep as a declaration of Tawheed.

| 114 | الناس | Mankind | الْخَنَّاسِ the retreating whisperer | Refuge from the internal whisperer | Makki |
Memory hooks for the whole syllabus
- Only 3 Madani surahs: البينة · الزلزلة · النصر (Bayyinah, Zalzalah, Nasr). Asked “Makki or Madani?” — if it isn't one of these three, answer Makki.
- The “occasion of revelation” set examiners love: Al-Masad (Abu Lahab's insult at Safa) · Al-Ikhlas (the idolaters asked to “describe your Lord's lineage”) · Al-Kawthar (al-ʿAs called the Prophet ﷺ abtar) · Al-Kafirun (Quraysh's worship-swap offer) · An-Nasr (the Farewell Hajj / the Prophet's ﷺ approaching death).
- “First” superlatives: Al-Alaq = the first revelation (“Iqra — Read!”) · Al-Fatiha = the first complete surah and the essence (Umm al-Kitab) · Laylat al-Qadr (Al-Qadr) = the night the Quran first descended, better than 1000 months.
- The protection set (Mu'awwidhat): Al-Ikhlas + Al-Falaq + An-Nas — recited after every fard salah and before sleep. Falaq = external evils; Nas = the internal whisperer (al-khannas, who retreats when Allah is remembered).
- Judgement-Day scenes: Az-Zalzalah (earth testifies, atom's weight seen) · Al-Qari'ah (the scales / mawazin) · At-Takathur (rivalry distracts “until you visit the graves”) · Al-Asr (all mankind in loss except faith, good deeds, advising truth & patience).
- Makkan history pair: Al-Feel (Allah destroyed Abraha's elephant army with the ababil birds) → Quraysh (so be grateful for the security and the winter/summer caravans → worship the Lord of this House). Cause → blessing.
- Consolation pair: Ad-Duha (“your Lord has not forsaken you”) + Ash-Sharh (“with hardship comes ease”) — both reassure the Prophet ﷺ. At-Teen: man made in the best form (aḥsan taqwīm).
