Thafseer Lafzi = the meaning of every word. For each surah: read the Arabic, learn the word-by-word meanings (the chips), then rebuild the translation in the Word-by-word tab. Theme / occasion / reflection are collapsed under each surah as background — context, not the focus of the lafzi paper. Flash mode hides the meanings so you can self-test.
Al-Maʿun — “Small Kindnesses / Aid” Makki · 7 verses · #107
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: faith is proven by action, not claims. The one who truly denies the
Day of Recompense is exposed by how he treats the orphan and the poor, and by praying for show while
refusing even small kindnesses.
📜 Context: Makki in its first part (condemning those who deny the Judgement and abuse
the orphan); the later verses about hollow, show-off prayer are often linked to the hypocrites. It draws
a line between real worship and religion as a performance.
Text & translation
1. Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?
2. That is the one who drives away the orphan,
3. and does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
4. So woe to those who pray —
5. those who are heedless of their prayer,
6. those who make a show [of their deeds]
7. and withhold [even] small kindnesses.
Key words (lafzi)
يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِdenies the Recompense / Judgement
يَدُعُّdrives away / repels harshly
الْيَتِيمَthe orphan
لَا يَحُضُّdoes not urge / encourage
الْمِسْكِينِthe poor / needy
سَاهُونَheedless / neglectful (of it)
يُرَاءُونَthey show off (riyaa)
الْمَاعُونَsmall kindnesses / everyday assistance
Reflection (background)
💡 Lesson: belief that ignores the orphan, the poor, and sincerity is empty.
Prayer done for show (riyaa) or out of habit, while withholding even small help, is condemned —
worship and good character are inseparable.
Al-Kawthar — “Abundance” Makki · 3 verses · #108shortest surah
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: consolation and abundance — Allah granted the Prophet ﷺ al-Kawthar
(vast good in this life and the next, and a river in Paradise); so devote worship to Allah; the one who
mocks the Prophet ﷺ is the one truly cut off.
📜 Occasion of revelation (know this one!): after the Prophet's ﷺ infant son died,
al-ʿAs ibn Waʾil called him أَبْتَر (“cut off”, with no male heir to carry his
name). Allah revealed this surah: it is the enemy who is abtar, while the Prophet ﷺ is given al-Kawthar —
abundance that never ends.
Text & translation
1. Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar (abundance).
2. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].
3. Indeed, the one who hates you — he is the one cut off.
Key words (lafzi)
We have given you
الْكَوْثَرَabundant good / a river in Paradise
فَصَلِّso pray
وَانْحَرْand sacrifice
شَانِئَكَthe one who hates you
الْأَبْتَرُthe cut-off one (no good, no legacy)
Reflection (background)
💡 Lesson: Allah's gifts outweigh every insult. The response to abundance is
gratitude through worship and sacrifice for Allah alone (the answer to those who sacrifice to idols).
Honour and legacy come from Allah, not from people's mockery.
Al-Kafirun — “The Disbelievers” Makki · 6 verses · #109surah of baraaʾah
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: total disavowal of shirk — there is no compromise between Tawheed and
idolatry. “You have your religion, and I have mine.”
📜 Occasion of revelation (know this one!): the Quraysh proposed a compromise —
“worship our gods for a year and we will worship your God for a year.” This surah was revealed to reject the
deal absolutely. It is recommended to recite before sleeping as a declaration of pure Tawheed (baraaʾah from shirk).
Text & translation
1. Say: O disbelievers,
2. I do not worship what you worship,
3. nor are you worshippers of what I worship.
4. Nor will I be a worshipper of what you worship,
5. nor will you be worshippers of what I worship.
6. For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.
Key words (lafzi)
الْكَافِرُونَthe disbelievers
I do not worship
مَا تَعْبُدُونَwhat you worship
عَابِدُونَworshippers
دِينُكُمْyour religion
وَلِيَ دِينِand for me is my religion
Reflection (background)
💡 Lesson: in matters of creed there is no blending. A Muslim is tolerant with
people but uncompromising on Tawheed — clear identity without aggression: “to you yours, to me mine.”
An-Nasr — “The Help / Victory” Madani · 3 verses · #110the Farewell surah
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: when Allah's help and the conquest of Makkah arrive and people accept
Islam in crowds, the response is not pride but tasbih, praise and seeking forgiveness.
📜 Context: one of the last surahs revealed, at Mina during the Farewell Hajj.
The Companions rejoiced at the victory, but ʿUmar and Ibn ʿAbbas understood it as a sign of the Prophet's ﷺ
approaching death — his mission was complete. Hence it is called سُورَةُ التَّوْدِيع
(the surah of farewell). It is Madani.
Text & translation
1. When the help of Allah and the conquest come,
2. and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes,
3. then exalt your Lord with praise and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.
Key words (lafzi)
نَصْرُ اللَّهِthe help of Allah
الْفَتْحُthe conquest (of Makkah)
أَفْوَاجًاin multitudes / crowds
فَسَبِّحْso glorify (say Subhan-Allah)
بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَwith praise of your Lord
اسْتَغْفِرْهُseek His forgiveness
تَوَّابًاever Accepting of repentance
Reflection (background)
💡 Lesson: meet success with humility — glorify Allah and seek forgiveness, not
self-congratulation. At the peak of victory the Prophet ﷺ was told to turn back to Allah; achievement is a
reminder to thank Him and prepare to meet Him.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| الماعون #107 | Small kindnesses / aid | الْمَاعُونَ small kindnesses | Faith proven by deeds — orphan, poor, no riyaa | Whoever denies Judgement abuses the orphan & prays for show |
| الكوثر #108 | Abundance | الْكَوْثَرَ abundance | Allah's gift to the Prophet ﷺ; pray & sacrifice | al-ʿAs called the Prophet ﷺ “abtar” — the hater is abtar |

Memory hooks
- Three “occasion” surahs to never miss: Al-Masad (Abu Lahab's insult), Al-Kawthar (al-ʿAs called the Prophet ﷺ abtar), Al-Kafirun (Quraysh's worship-swap offer). Examiners love the reason for revelation.
- Al-Maʿun pairing: denying the Judgement (يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّين) shows up as abusing the orphan + ignoring the poor + praying for show + withholding small aid.
- Kawthar = shortest surah (3 verses). Its command: فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ — pray and sacrifice for Allah alone (vs idolaters' sacrifice).
- Kafirun = the surah of baraaʾah (disassociation). Memory: “to you yours, to me mine” (لَكُمْ دِينُكُمْ وَلِيَ دِينِ) — no compromise on Tawheed.
- Nasr = the farewell. Victory (نصر + فتح) → people enter Islam أَفْوَاجًا → respond with سَبِّحْ + اسْتَغْفِرْ. It hinted the Prophet's ﷺ mission was finishing.
- Mu'awwidhat protection set: Ikhlas + Falaq + Nas (after every fard salah & before sleep); Kafirun is also recommended before sleep as a declaration of Tawheed.
