📖 Thafseer 4 — Judgement day scenes

Al-Adiyat · Al-Qari'ah · At-Takathur · Al-Asr · Exam: Sunday 11:30

Thafseer Lafzi = the meaning of every word. For each surah: read the Arabic, learn the word-by-word meanings (the chips), then rebuild the translation in the Word-by-word tab. Theme / occasion / reflection are collapsed under each surah as background — context, not the focus of the lafzi paper. Flash mode hides the meanings so you can self-test.
Al-Adiyat — “The Chargers / Racers” Makki · 11 verses · #100
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: man is ungrateful to his Lord and consumed by love of wealth — yet a Day is coming when all hidden things are exposed.
📜 Context: Allah swears by the warhorses charging into battle — panting, striking sparks, raiding at dawn, stirring dust, plunging into the enemy ranks — a vivid oath that contrasts the horses' loyalty and effort with man's ingratitude to his Creator.
Text & translation
1. By the racers, panting,
2. striking sparks (with their hooves),
3. raiding at dawn,
4. stirring up clouds of dust,

6. Indeed, man is ungrateful to his Lord,
7. and he is himself a witness to that,
8. and he is intense in his love of wealth.
9. Does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered,
10. and what is in the breasts is brought out —
11. that their Lord, that Day, is fully aware of them?

Al-Qari'ah — “The Striking Calamity” Makki · 11 verses · #101
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: a scene of the Day of Judgement — when deeds are weighed: a heavy scale brings bliss, a light scale brings the Fire.
📜 Context: al-Qari‘ah (“the striking/crashing one”) is a name of the Resurrection. People will scatter like moths and the mountains will become like fluffed wool; everything then hinges on the balance (mizan) of one's deeds.
Text & translation
1–2. The Striking Calamity! What is the Striking Calamity?
3. And what will make you realise what it is?
4. The Day people will be like scattered moths,
5. and the mountains like fluffed-up wool.
6–7. As for the one whose scales are heavy, he will be in a pleasant life.
8–9. But as for the one whose scales are light, his refuge will be the Abyss.
10–11. And what will make you realise what it is? A blazing Fire.
Key words (lafzi)
الْقَارِعَةُthe striking calamity (Resurrection)
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَand what will make you know
كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِlike scattered moths

Reflection (background)
💡 Lesson: everything ends on the balance — fill your scale with good deeds now, while they can still be weighed. A heavy scale = a pleasant life; a light scale = the Abyss.
At-Takathur — “Rivalry in Worldly Increase” Makki · 8 verses · #102
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: the competition to pile up wealth and numbers distracts people from the Hereafter — until death, and then a reckoning for every blessing.
📜 Context: a rebuke of those obsessed with boasting about wealth and numbers. It is reported that two clans even went to the graves to count their dead in their rivalry. The surah warns that everyone will be questioned about the blessings (na‘eem) they enjoyed.
Text & translation
1. The mutual rivalry for piling up (worldly things) distracts you,
2. until you visit the graves.
3–4. No! You will come to know. Again, no! You will come to know.
5. No! If only you knew with certainty of knowledge —
6–7. You will surely see the Hellfire; then you will see it with the eye of certainty.

Al-Asr — “Time / The Declining Day” Makki · 3 verses · #103a complete code of success
Theme & context (background)
🎯 Theme: by time, all mankind is in loss — except those with four qualities: faith, good deeds, and mutually enjoining truth and patience.
📜 Context: Allah swears by al-‘Asr (time / the passing age). Imam ash-Shafi‘i said that if people pondered only this surah, it would be enough to guide them — it sums up the whole path to salvation in three verses. Companions would recite it to one another before parting.
Text & translation

2. indeed mankind is in loss,

Memory hooks

  1. All four are Makki and run #100→#103 in order — Adiyat, Qari'ah, Takathur, Asr. Learn them as a consecutive block.
  2. Adiyat's horse-oath → man's flaw: the loyal warhorse strains for its rider, yet man is كَنُود (ungrateful) and لِحُبِّ الْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ (greedy for wealth).
  3. Qari'ah = the scales. Heavy scale (ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ) → pleasant life; light scale (خَفَّتْ) → هَاوِيَة, the Abyss. Images: people = scattered moths, mountains = fluffed wool.
  4. Takathur's three certainties: ‘ilm al-yaqin (knowledge), ‘ayn al-yaqin (sight) — you will SEE the Hellfire — then questioned about النَّعِيم (every blessing). Hook: counting at the graves.
  5. Al-Asr = the 4-point success formula: (1) iman, (2) good deeds, (3) enjoin truth, (4) enjoin patience. Everyone else is فِي خُسْرٍ (in loss).
  6. Resurrection name-bank: الْقَارِعَة (the striking calamity) and الْجَحِيم / هَاوِيَة / نَارٌ حَامِيَة are all Hell/Judgement vocabulary in this lesson.
