Dialogue 1 — غانِم & غالِب (the timetable)
اُكْتُبِ المَوادَّ الدِّراسِيَّةَ. — الثَّقافةُ الإسلامِيّةُ، واللُّغةُ العَرَبِيّةُ، والرِّياضِيّاتُ، والعُلومُ، والحاسوبُ.Write the subjects. — Islamic culture, Arabic, maths, science and computing.
الدِّراسةُ خَمْسةُ أيّامٍ في الأُسْبوعِ. العُطْلةُ يَوْمُ الخَميسِ ويَوْمُ الجُمُعةِ.Study is five days a week. The weekend is Thursday and Friday.
مَتى تَبْدَأُ الاِخْتِباراتُ؟ — في شَهْرِ شَعْبانَ. ومَتى يَنْتَهي العامُ الدِّراسِيُّ؟ — في شَهْرِ رَمَضانَ.When do the exams start? — In Sha'ban. And when does the school year end? — In Ramadan.
Dialogue 2 — نَدى & إلْهام (which faculty)
أنا طالِبةٌ في جامِعةِ دِمَشْقَ. — أنا طالِبةٌ في جامِعةِ أمِّ القُرى.I'm a student at Damascus University. — I'm a student at Umm al-Qura University.
في أَيِّ كُلِّيّةٍ تَدْرُسينَ؟ — أَدْرُسُ في كُلِّيّةِ التَّرْبيةِ.In which faculty do you (f.) study? — I study in the Faculty of Education.
سَأَكونُ مُدَرِّسةً إن شاء الله. — وسَأَكونُ طَبيبةً إن شاء الله.I will be a teacher, God willing. — And I will be a doctor, God willing.
Dialogue 3 — قاسِم & غَسّان (the school day)
أَيْنَ تَذْهَبُ يا غَسّانُ؟ — أَذْهَبُ إلى المَدْرَسةِ. المَدْرَسةُ بَعيدةٌ عَنِ البَيْتِ.Where are you going, Ghassan? — To school. The school is far from home.
مَتى يَبْدَأُ اليَوْمُ الدِّراسِيُّ؟ — يَبْدَأُ الساعةَ السابِعةَ صَباحًا.When does the school day start? — At seven in the morning.
هَلْ تَذْهَبُ بالحافِلةِ؟ — لا، أَذْهَبُ بالسَّيّارةِ.Do you go by bus? — No, I go by car.
كَمْ حِصّةً تَدْرُسُ في اليَوْمِ؟ — أَدْرُسُ سِتَّ حِصَصٍ. ماذا تَفْعَلُ في الاِسْتِراحةِ؟ — أَذْهَبُ إلى المَكْتَبةِ أو المُخْتَبَرِ.How many periods do you study a day? — Six. What do you do in the break? — I go to the library or the lab.
Six points carry Unit 7.
- Command + object (الأمر + مفعول به). Drop the present prefix; the noun after takes ـَ: يَنْظُرُ → اُنْظُرْ إلى اللَّوْحةِ · يَقْرَأُ → اِقْرَأِ الجَدْوَلَ · يَكْتُبُ → اُكْتُبِ المَوادَّ
- The future سـ. Add سـ to the present: أَكونُ → سَأَكونُ مُدَرِّسةً · أَعْمَلُ → سَأَعْمَلُ I will be / I will work
- «or» (أو). Offers a choice between two things: أَذْهَبُ إلى المَكْتَبةِ أو المُخْتَبَرِ.
- near to / far from. Note the matching preposition: قَريبٌ مِن البَيْتِ near to · بَعيدٌ عَنِ البَيْتِ far from
- «in which…?» (في أَيِّ). Followed by a noun, then a verb: في أَيِّ كُلِّيّةٍ تَدْرُسينَ؟ · في أَيِّ جامِعةٍ تَدْرُسُ؟
- Talking to a female; talking about the past. Address a female with ـينَ; say what «I» did with ـْتُ: تَدْرُسينَ · تُصَلّينَ · تَسْكُنينَ | دَرَسْتُ · ذَهَبْتُ I studied / I went
