Dialogue 1 — عُثمان & عَلِيّ (jobs & hours)
أَعْمَلُ طَبيبًا، ماذا تَعْمَلُ أنتَ؟ — أَعْمَلُ مُهَنْدِسًا.I work as a doctor; what do you do? — I work as an engineer.
أَيْنَ تَعْمَلُ؟ — أَعْمَلُ في شَرِكةٍ. وأَيْنَ تَعْمَلُ أنتَ؟ — أَعْمَلُ في المُسْتَشْفى.Where do you work? — In a company. And you? — In the hospital.
كَمْ ساعةً تَعْمَلُ في اليَوْمِ؟ — أَعْمَلُ ثَماني ساعاتٍ. — وأنا أَعْمَلُ سَبْعَ ساعاتٍ.How many hours a day do you work? — Eight hours. — And I work seven hours.

في أَيِّ مَرْحَلةٍ تُدَرِّسينَ؟ — أُدَرِّسُ في المَرْحَلةِ الاِبْتِدائيّةِ.Which stage do you teach? — I teach in the primary stage.

1 · Professions m/f by root
- Each profession has a field → person (agent noun) pair: الصَّيْدَلة → صَيْدَلِيّ (pharmacy → pharmacist), التَّمْريض → مُمَرِّض (nursing → nurse), الهَنْدَسة → مُهَنْدِس, الطَّيَران → طَيّار, التَّرْبية → مُدَرِّس. ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V38 §4–§8
- Nursing root م-ر-ض: تَمْريض (nursing) · مُمَرِّض/ة (nurse) · مَرَض (illness) · مَريض/ة (patient). ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V38 §5

2 · Fronted khabar — أعمل + accusative "as a…"
- The profession after أَعْمَلُ / سَأَعْمَلُ takes accusative ـً = English "as a…": أَعْمَلُ طَبيبًا · سَأَعْمَلُ مُهَنْدِسًا. ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V37 §22–§24
- Contrast: أنا طَبيبٌ ("I am a doctor," nominal/nominative) ≠ أَعْمَلُ طَبيبًا ("I work as a doctor," accusative = role). ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V37 §21–§22
- This accusative ـً is a tanwīn fatḥah — the indefinite object marker after the present verb. ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V37 §24

3 · هل + مضارع / لي and laysa lī
- Ask possession with هَلْ لَكَ / لَكِ …؟ → answer fronted لي ابْنٌ · لي أَخٌ ("I have a son / a brother"). ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V39 §13
- Negative possession: لَيْسَ لي أُخْتٌ = "I don't have a sister" (vs the short لا). ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V39 §14

4 · kam sāʿatan + tanwīn
- The كم rule: after كَمْ a singular noun follows (not a verb), carrying tanwīn fatḥah ـً: كَمْ ساعةً تَعْمَلُ؟ · كَمْ كِتابًا تَقْرَأُ؟ · كَمْ طِفْلًا لَكَ؟. ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V37 §49–§53
- Contrast: ما / ماذا / أين leave the following word unchanged (stays nominative: أين بَيْتُكَ؟) — only كَمْ changes it. ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V37 §47

5 · Clock & time + school stages
- ساعة means both a clock/watch AND an hour/period of time — plural ساعات = hours. ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V37 §19
- Tell the time with الساعة + the feminine ordinal + a part of day: صَباحًا (morning), ظُهْرًا (noon), مَساءً (evening), فَجْرًا (dawn). ▶ Sheikh Irfan · V39 §3

- هَلْ + present → نَعَمْ + answer. هَلْ تُحِبُّ عَمَلَكَ؟ — نَعَمْ، أُحِبُّ عَمَلي.
- «I have…» = fronted khabar with لِـ / عِنْد. Arabic has no verb «to have»: لي أَطْفالٌ I have children · هَلْ لَكِ أَطْفالٌ؟ · عِنْدي سَيّارةٌ
