Thafseer Lafzi 12 — Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn (83) — introduction and āyāt 1–15 سُورَة الْمُطَفِّفِين

Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn word by word, āyāt 1–15: the woe to those who give short measure, the record of the wicked in Sijjīn, and the rust that settles on the heart. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn (83), the introduction and āyāt 1–15, continuing the course backwards through Juzʾ ʿAmma from al-Inshiqāq (84); āyah 16 onward follows in the next lesson. Its name and why it carries it, the Makkī/Madanī difference, the occasion of revelation (the people of Madīnah cheating in measure and weight), its place (83rd in the muṣḥaf, 86th in the order of revelation, 36 āyāt) and its four parts. Word meanings: wayl, al-muṭaffifīn, iktālū, ʿalā n-nās, yastawfūn, kālūhum, wazanūhum, yukhsirūn, alā, yaẓunnu, ulāʾika, mabʿūthūn, yawm ʿaẓīm, yaqūmu, an-nās, rabb al-ʿālamīn, kallā, kitāb, al-fujjār, sijjīn, mā adrāka, marqūm, mukadhdhibīn, yawm ad-dīn, muʿtadin, athīm, tutlā, āyātunā, asāṭīr al-awwalīn, bal, rāna, qulūbihim, yaksibūn, maḥjūbūn. Ṣarf: ṭaffafa / yuṭaffifu / taṭfīf, iktāla and istawfā (mazīd) against kāla and wazana (mujarrad), akhsara → yukhsiru, ẓann, mabʿūth and marqūm as ism mafʿūl, the sound masculine plural (wāw in rafʿ, yāʾ in naṣb and jarr), the singular verb before a plural doer, inna → naṣb, the ism fāʿil / ism mafʿūl vowel before the last letter, tutlā as a feminine muḍāriʿ majhūl, kasaba. Tajwīd: the saktah (four obligatory places, two permitted) and the four rules of the nūn sākinah and tanwīn.
This lesson opens Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn (83) and takes it from the introduction to āyah 15, continuing backwards through Juzʾ ʿAmma from al-Inshiqāq (84). Learn (1) why the sūrah is named for those who give short measure, and the occasion it came down on; (2) the cheats' double standard — full measure for themselves, short measure for others; (3) the Day when mankind stands before the Lord of the worlds; (4) the record of the wicked in Sijjīn; and (5) the rust that their deeds leave on the heart, and their being screened from their Lord. The ṣarf to hold: the sound masculine plural in rafʿ and in jarr, the singular verb before a plural doer, and the ism fāʿil against the ism mafʿūl. Two tajwīd points ride along: the saktah, and the four rules of the nūn sākinah and tanwīn.

1 · Introducing the sūrah #

ItemDetail
Sūrahal-Muṭaffifīn, sūrah 83 — 82 sūrahs come before it in the muṣḥaf
Makkī or Madanī?A difference of opinion — some call it Makkī, some Madanī
Occasion of revelationThe people of Madīnah were cheating in measure and weight; the āyāt came down after the Prophet ﷺ came to Madīnah, warning those who cheat in measure and weight. It is recorded as the first sūrah sent down after he set out for Madīnah — and on that view it is Madanī
Order of revelation86th — sent down before al-Baqarah
Length36 āyāt

The four parts of the sūrah:

PartĀyātAbout
11–6A warning to the cheats
27–17The record of the wicked
318–28The record given in the right hand — the righteous
429–36The end of the people of Paradise and the end of the sinners

This lesson covers part 1 and most of part 2 — āyāt 1–15.

2 · Āyah 1 — woe to those who give short measure #

وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ

Waylun lil-muṭaffifīn

"Woe to those who give short measure."

WordArabicMeaning
waylوَيْلٌruin, destruction — a woe, a warning
al-muṭaffifīnٱلْمُطَفِّفِينَthose who diminish — who cheat in measure and weight

You have met wayl before, in Sūrat al-Humazah: وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ. There too it meant destruction for a certain group of people.

Measure and weight. Some goods are measured out and some are weighed out, and buying and selling is done by one or the other — liquid or solid. Today nearly everything is weighed. The woe is addressed to everyone who adopts the method of giving short, whichever way the goods are handed over.

The ṣarf of مُطَفِّفِينَ:

FormArabicNote
Māḍīطَفَّفَṭaffafa — thulāthī mazīd fīh: three root letters, built up
Muḍāriʿيُطَفِّفُyuṭaffifu
Maṣdarتَطْفِيفtaṭfīf — on the wazn تَفْعِيل
Ism fāʿilمُطَفِّفone who gives short — masculine singular
Pluralمُطَفِّفُونَjamʿ mudhakkar sālim — the sound masculine plural

Why -īn and not -ūn? In its normal (rafʿ) state the plural ends in wāw: مُطَفِّفُونَ. But in وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ a lām comes in front of it, which makes the word majrūr, and the wāw turns into a yāʾ: لِلْمُطَفِّفِينَ.

3 · Āyāt 2–3 — full measure for themselves, short measure for others #

ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ · وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ

Alladhīna idhā ktālū ʿalā n-nāsi yastawfūn · wa idhā kālūhum aw wazanūhum yukhsirūn

"Who, when they take a measure from people, take it in full; but when they measure for them or weigh for them, they give less."

WordArabicMeaning
alladhīnaٱلَّذِينَthose who
idhā ktālūإِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟when they take a measure — when they measure what they are buying for themselves
ʿalā n-nāsعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِfrom people
yastawfūnيَسْتَوْفُونَthey take it in full, in complete measure
kālūhumكَالُوهُمْthey measured out for them — هُمْ points back to ٱلنَّاس
wazanūhumوَزَنُوهُمْthey weighed out for them
yukhsirūnيُخْسِرُونَthey give less, they cause loss

The double standard is the whole charge: when buying, they insist on the full measure; when selling, they hand over less.

A story that makes the point. A shop-owner complained that the goods a poor farmer brought him came up short. The farmer answered that he had no weights of his own — he weighed his goods against what he had bought from that very shop. So it came out: the shop-owner had been giving 900 grams for every kilo. His own cheating came back on him. This āyah came as a warning to people like that.

The ṣarf of the verbs in āyāt 2–3:

VerbFormsNote
iktālaٱكْتَالَ · يَكْتَالُ · ٱكْتِيَالA five-letter verb (mazīd fīh). It is plural here because ٱلَّذِينَ before it is plural
istawfāٱسْتَوْفَى · يَسْتَوْفِي · يَسْتَوْفُونَOn the wazn ٱسْتَفْعَلَ — bāb istifʿāl. Amr ٱسْتَوْفِ, ism fāʿil مُسْتَوْفٍ, ism mafʿūl مُسْتَوْفًى
kālaكَالَ · كَالُوا۟Mujarrad — three letters, nothing added (against iktāla, which is mazīd). Ism fāʿil كَائِل, ism mafʿūl مَكِيل
wazanaوَزَنَ · يَزِنُ · زِنْPlural māḍī وَزَنُوا۟ — "they weighed out"; the amr is زِنْ
akhsaraأَخْسَرَ · يُخْسِرُ · يُخْسِرُونَA four-letter māḍī, so the yāʾ of the muḍāriʿ takes a ḍammah: يُخْسِرُ. Amr أَخْسِرْ, ism fāʿil مُخْسِر, ism mafʿūl مُخْسَر

4 · Āyāt 4–6 — the Day mankind stands before its Lord #

أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ · لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ · يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Alā yaẓunnu ulāʾika annahum mabʿūthūn · li-yawmin ʿaẓīm · yawma yaqūmu n-nāsu li-rabbi l-ʿālamīn

"Do those not think that they will be raised up — for a tremendous Day, the Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?"

WordArabicMeaning
alāأَلَاdo they not …? — a question (istifhām) with لَا
yaẓunnuيَظُنُّhe thinks, he supposes
ulāʾikaأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَthose
mabʿūthūnمَّبْعُوثُونَraised up — brought back to life on the Day of the hereafter
li-yawmin ʿaẓīmلِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍfor a great, tremendous Day
yaqūmuيَقُومُwill stand
an-nāsٱلنَّاسُmankind, people
li-rabbi l-ʿālamīnلِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَbefore the Lord of the worlds

Grammar in this block:

PointDetail
ẓannaيَظُنُّ is from ظَنَّ; its maṣdar is ظَنّ — the word in the familiar phrases حُسْنُ ٱلظَّنّ (good opinion) and سُوءُ ٱلظَّنّ (bad opinion)
mabʿūthūnAn ism mafʿūl, from بَعَثَ (baʿatha), "to raise up" — here masculine plural
The singular verb before a plural doerيَقُومُ is singular, though its doer ٱلنَّاسُ is plural. The rule: when the verb comes first, it stays singular even if the doer is plural. In translation it is still plural — "people will stand"
qāmaMaṣdar قِيَام, amr قُمْ, ism fāʿil قَائِم

5 · Āyāt 7–9 — the record of the wicked is in Sijjīn #

كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ · وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ · كِتَٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ

Kallā inna kitāba l-fujjāri la-fī sijjīn · wa mā adrāka mā sijjīn · kitābun marqūm

"No! Indeed the record of the wicked is in Sijjīn. And what will make you know what Sijjīn is? A record written out."

WordArabicMeaning
kallāكَلَّآnot so!
innaإِنَّindeed
kitābكِتَٰبَthe record book
al-fujjārٱلْفُجَّارِthe wicked, the sinners
la-fī sijjīnلَفِى سِجِّينٍis in Sijjīn
wa mā adrākaوَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَand what has made you know? — مَا a question word, أَدْرَىٰ a māḍī, "he made known", كَ "you"
marqūmمَّرْقُومٌwritten, written out to the end

Why كِتَٰبَ takes a fatḥah: إِنَّ has come before it, so it is manṣūb. And سِجِّينٍ is majrūr because فِى comes before it.

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ is addressed to the Prophet ﷺ: "what has made known to you what Sijjīn is?" — and the answer follows: a record written out, the book in which the deeds of the wicked are written. مَرْقُوم is an ism mafʿūl, from the letters رَاء · قَاف · مِيم. The phrase وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ recurs in many places in the Qurʾān.

Tajwīd — the idghām in كِتَٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ. A tanwīn is followed by a mīm, so the two are joined and read together: this is idghām. Whenever one of the letters of the word يَرْمَلُونَ follows a nūn sākinah or a tanwīn, idghām is done. It comes in two kinds — with ghunnah and without ghunnah.

6 · Āyāt 10–13 — the deniers of the Day of Recompense #

Waylun yawmaʾidhin lil-mukadhdhibīn · alladhīna yukadhdhibūna bi-yawmi d-dīn · wa mā yukadhdhibu bihī illā kullu muʿtadin athīm · idhā tutlā ʿalayhi āyātunā qāla asāṭīru l-awwalīn

"Woe, that Day, to the deniers — those who deny the Day of Recompense. And none denies it except every sinful transgressor: when Our verses are recited to him, he says, 'Legends of the former peoples.'"

WordArabicMeaning
al-mukadhdhibīnٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَthe deniers, those who call it a lie
yukadhdhibūnيُكَذِّبُونَthey deny
yawm ad-dīnيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِthe Day of Recompense — the Day of Qiyāmah, on which recompense is given
wa mā yukadhdhibu bihīوَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓand none denies it — "it" is that Day
illāإِلَّاexcept
kulluكُلُّevery
muʿtadinمُعْتَدٍone who oversteps the limit
athīmأَثِيمٍsinner
idhāإِذَاwhen — a condition (sharṭ)
tutlāتُتْلَىٰis recited
ʿalayhiعَلَيْهِto him
āyātunāءَايَٰتُنَاOur verses — ءَايَات, plural of ءَايَة, with نَا, "our" (as قَلَمُنَا, "our pen")
asāṭīr al-awwalīnأَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَlegends, made-up tales of the ancients

Yawm ad-dīn elsewhere. It is the same Day as in Sūrat al-Fātiḥah — مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ, and in Sūrat al-Māʿūn — ٱلَّذِى يُكَذِّبُ بِٱلدِّينِ. That is the Day these people deny. مُعْتَدٍ and أَثِيمٍ are both attributes (ṣifāt) of the one who denies it.

Grammar in this block:

PointDetail
Mukadhdhibīn — the sound masculine plural againAn ism fāʿil of كَذَّبَ: مُكَذِّب, plural مُكَذِّبُونَ. The lām in front makes it majrūr, so the wāw becomes yāʾ. The jamʿ mudhakkar sālim is made by adding wāw and nūn to the singular: wāw in rafʿ; yāʾ in naṣb and jarr
kadhdhabaكَذَّبَ · يُكَذِّبُ (plural يُكَذِّبُونَ), maṣdar تَكْذِيب — bāb tafʿīl; amr كَذِّبْ; ism fāʿil مُكَذِّب; ism mafʿūl مُكَذَّب
Ism fāʿil against ism mafʿūlIn verbs whose māḍī has four, five or six letters, the difference is the letter before the last: kasrah in the ism fāʿil (مُكَذِّب), fatḥah in the ism mafʿūl (مُكَذَّب)
tutlāFrom تَلَا · يَتْلُو; يُتْلَىٰ is the muḍāriʿ majhūl. Here it comes in the feminine, تُتْلَىٰ, because of ءَايَٰت after it. Amr ٱتْلُ ("recite!"), ism fāʿil تَالٍ

7 · Āyāt 14–15 — rust on the heart, a screen from the Lord #

كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ · كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ

Kallā bal rāna ʿalā qulūbihim mā kānū yaksibūn · kallā innahum ʿan rabbihim yawmaʾidhin la-maḥjūbūn

"No! Rather, what they used to earn has rusted over their hearts. No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be screened off."

WordArabicMeaning
balبَلْrather
rānaرَانَit has rusted over, it has settled on — a māḍī
ʿalā qulūbihimعَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمupon their hearts
mā kānū yaksibūnمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَwhat they had been earning — كَانُوا۟ the plural māḍī of كَانَ, يَكْسِبُونَ a plural muḍāriʿ
innahumإِنَّهُمْindeed they
ʿan rabbihimعَن رَّبِّهِمْfrom their Lord
yawmaʾidhinيَوْمَئِذٍon that Day
la-maḥjūbūnلَّمَحْجُوبُونَthey will surely be screened off, kept away

What they earned settled on their hearts like rust — and on that Day they are screened off from their Lord.

FormDetail
kasabaكَسَبَ · يَكْسِبُ (plural يَكْسِبُونَ); maṣdar كَسْب; amr ٱكْسِبْ; ism fāʿil كَاسِب; ism mafʿūl مَكْسُوب
maḥjūbFrom حَجَبَ — root حَاء · جِيم · بَاء; مَحْجُوب, one who is screened off; plural مَحْجُوبُونَ

Tajwīd — the saktah at بَلْ ۜ رَانَ. The muṣḥaf marks this place with a small sīn (or the word saktah). A saktah is a brief stop without taking a breath — stop, hold the breath, and carry on.

Four places where the saktah is obligatory:

  1. Sūrat al-Muṭaffifīn, āyah 14 — كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ
  2. Sūrat al-Qiyāmah
  3. Sūrat al-Kahf, at the end of the first āyah — عِوَجَا ۜ قَيِّمًا
  4. Sūrat Yā-Sīn, āyah 52

Places where it is permitted (jāʾiz), not obligatory: Sūrat al-Ḥāqqah — مَالِيَهْ ۜ هَلَكَ عَنِّى سُلْطَٰنِيَهْ may be read with a saktah or without; and where Sūrat al-Anfāl ends and Sūrat at-Tawbah begins — at-Tawbah has no basmalah — one may make a saktah and read on.

Tajwīd — the four rules of the nūn sākinah and tanwīn. In عَن رَّبِّهِمْ a nūn sākinah is followed by rāʾ, one of the letters of يَرْمَلُونَ, so it is read with idghām. Every one of the 28 letters that can follow a nūn sākinah or a tanwīn falls under one of four rules:

RuleWhenLetters
IẓhārA throat letter (ḥurūf ḥalqiyyah) followsء · ه · ع · ح · غ · خ (six)
IdghāmA letter of يَرْمَلُونَ followsي · ر · م · ل · و · ن (six) — with or without ghunnah
IqlābA bāʾ followsب (one)
IkhfāʾAny of the rest followsThe remaining fifteen — 28 less the thirteen above

The sūrah continues from āyah 16 in the next lesson.
