Thafseer Lafzi 11 — Sūrat al-Inshiqāq (84) — the whole sūrah سُورَة الانْشِقَاق

Sūrat al-Inshiqāq, āyāt 1–25: from the sky splitting open to the reward that is never cut off. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
Sūrat al-Inshiqāq (84), āyah 1 to āyah 25, continuing the course backwards through Juzʾ ʿAmma from al-Burūj (85). Its place — juzʾ ʿAmma, the thirtieth juzʾ, the 84th sūrah counting from al-Fātiḥah — then the whole sūrah in order: the four signs of the Hour (the sky split open, the earth stretched out, the earth casting out what is in it and emptying, and both obeying their Lord), man labouring toward his Lord and meeting Him, the two records (the right hand → an easy reckoning and a joyful return to one's family · from behind the back → calling out for destruction and burning in the Blaze), the heedless man who was pleased among his people and thought he would never return, the three oaths (the twilight, the night and what it gathers in, the moon when it is full), stage upon stage, the rejecters who do not believe and do not prostrate, and the closing reward that is never cut off. Word meanings: inshaqqat, as-samāʾ, adhinat, li-rabbihā, ḥuqqat, al-arḍ, muddat, alqat, mā fīhā, takhallat, al-insān, kādiḥ, kadḥ, fa-mulāqīh, ūtiya, kitābahu, bi-yamīnihi, yamīn, shimāl, sawfa, yuḥāsabu, ḥisāban yasīrā, yanqalibu, ahlihi, masrūrā, warāʾa ẓahrihi, ẓahr, amām, yadʿū, thubūrā, yaṣlā, saʿīrā, kāna, ẓanna, yaḥūra, balā, baṣīrā, uqsimu, ash-shafaq, al-layl, wasaqa, al-qamar, ittasaqa, la-tarkabunna, ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaq, lā yuʾminūn, quriʾa, lā yasjudūn, bal, kafarū, yukadhdhibūn, aʿlamu, bimā yūʿūn, bashshir, ʿadhāb alīm, āmanū, ʿamilū aṣ-ṣāliḥāt, ajr, ghayru mamnūn. Grammar and ṣarf: the feminine (muʾannath) verb after a feminine subject running through āyāt 1–5, muddat and quriʾa and ūtiya as māḍī majhūl, alqā as a four-letter fiʿl māḍī, the pronoun فِيهَا against بِهِ, mulāqī as an ism fāʿil from لَاقَى with مُلَاقَاة and لِقَاء as its maṣdar and the alif maqṣūrah, sīn and sawfa before the muḍāriʿ for the future, lan and lā negating the muḍāriʿ, the first-person muḍāriʿ أُقْسِمُ (yāʾ replaced by hamzah), the nūn at-tawkīd — ثَقِيلَة with shaddah, خَفِيفَة when sākin, on muḍāriʿ, amr and nahy — and aʿlam as an ism tafḍīl on the wazn أَفْعَل. Closes with nine lessons.
This lesson takes Sūrat al-Inshiqāq (84) entire — all twenty-five āyāt, continuing backwards through Juzʾ ʿAmma from al-Burūj (85). Learn (1) the four signs the sūrah opens on — the sky, the earth, and both of them obeying; (2) man labouring toward his Lord and meeting Him; (3) the two records and the two outcomes that follow them; (4) the three oaths and ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaq; and (5) the close on the reward that is never cut off. The ṣarf to hold: the feminine verb after a feminine subject, sīn and sawfa before the muḍāriʿ, the nūn at-tawkīd heavy against light, and aʿlam as an ism tafḍīl.

1 · Introducing the sūrah #

ItemDetail

Where it sitsIn juzʾ ʿAmma — the thirtieth juzʾ
How to fix the numberCount up from al-Fātiḥah (1), al-Baqarah (2), Āl ʿImrān (3) — counted through in full, this comes as the 84th sūrah
What the opening is aboutThe signs of the Day of Qiyāmah — "when the sky is split open"

2 · Āyāt 1–5 — the sky, the earth, and both obeying #

إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْ · وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ · وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ · وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ · وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

Idhā s-samāʾu nshaqqat · wa adhinat li-rabbihā wa ḥuqqat · wa idhā l-arḍu muddat · wa alqat mā fīhā wa takhallat · wa adhinat li-rabbihā wa ḥuqqat

"When the sky is split open, and it listens to its Lord — and it is right that it should; and when the earth is stretched out, and casts out what is within it and empties itself, and it listens to its Lord — and it is right that it should."

WordArabicMeaning
inshaqqatٱنشَقَّتْit split open, it was torn apart
as-samāʾٱلسَّمَآءthe sky
adhinatأَذِنَتْit gave ear, it listened — i.e. it obeyed the command
li-rabbihāلِرَبِّهَاto its Lord
ḥuqqatحُقَّتْit was made binding upon it — it became an obligation for it
al-arḍٱلْأَرْضthe earth
muddatمُدَّتْit was stretched out — spread long and wide
alqatأَلْقَتْit throws out, it casts forth
mā fīhāمَا فِيهَاwhat is within it — what the earth has inside itself
takhallatتَخَلَّتْit empties itself — it is left empty

The point that runs across these five āyāt: every one of these verbs comes in the feminine (muʾannath) form, because ٱلسَّمَآء and ٱلْأَرْض are both feminine. And āyah 5 is āyah 2 repeated word for word — the wording and the meaning are the same; what changes is who is obeying. In āyah 2 it is the sky; in āyah 5 it is the earth, which must bring out what is within it at its Lord's command — and it obeyed.

Everything submits to His command.

FormArabicNote
muddatمُدَّتْA māḍī majhūl — a past-tense passive: "it was stretched out" — and feminine, because al-arḍ is feminine
alqāأَلْقَىA four-letter fiʿl māḍī
The pronounفِيهَاPoints back to ٱلْأَرْض: had the word been masculine it would have come as بِهِ; because it is feminine it comes as فِيهَا

3 · Āyah 6 — man is labouring toward his Lord #

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ

Yā ayyuhā l-insānu innaka kādiḥun ilā rabbika kadḥan fa-mulāqīh

"O man, you are labouring toward your Lord with great labour — and you will meet Him."

WordArabicMeaning
yā ayyuhā l-insānيَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُO man!
kādiḥكَادِحٌstriving, toiling
ilā rabbikaإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَtoward your Lord
kadḥanكَدْحًاwith hardship, with great effort
fa-mulāqīhفَمُلَٰقِيهِso you will meet Him

The whole āyah in plain words: "O man — until you reach your Lord you keep labouring with hardship at many works, good and bad. So in the hereafter, be one who will meet Him."

The ṣarf of مُلَٰقِي: it is an ism fāʿil, from لَاقَى (lāqā) — لَاقَى / يُلَاقِي — and its maṣdar is مُلَاقَاة (mulāqāh); لِقَاء (liqāʾ) also comes. On the letters: لَاقَى is written with the alif at the end in the shape of a yāʾ — the alif maqṣūrah.

4 · Āyāt 7–9 — the record in the right hand #

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ · فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا · وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًا

Fa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu bi-yamīnih · fa-sawfa yuḥāsabu ḥisāban yasīrā · wa yanqalibu ilā ahlihi masrūrā

"As for him who is given his record in his right hand — he will be reckoned with an easy reckoning, and he will return to his family in joy."

WordArabicMeaning
ūtiyaأُوتِىَhe was given — the majhūl of آتَى (ātā), "to give"
kitābahuكِتَٰبَهُۥhis book — the record in which everything from his life in this world has been written down
bi-yamīnihiبِيَمِينِهِۦin his right hand — يَمِين is right, its opposite شِمَال, left
yuḥāsabuيُحَاسَبُhe will be called to account — a muḍāriʿ majhūl
ḥisāban yasīrāحِسَابًا يَسِيرًاan easy reckoning
yanqalibuيَنقَلِبُhe turns back, he returns — a muḍāriʿ, its māḍī ٱنقَلَبَ
ahlihiأَهْلِهِۦhis family, his own people
masrūrāمَسْرُورًاin joy, gladly

فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ is the jawāb — the reply — to the أَمَّا that came before it.

The particles that throw a muḍāriʿ into the future:

ParticleArabicWhat it does
sawfaسَوْفَComes before a muḍāriʿ and throws it into the future
sīnسِينLikewise comes before a muḍāriʿ and gives the same future sense — يَقُولُ → سَيَقُولُ, "he will say"

So the one whose record is placed in his right hand is the one who gets an easy reckoning and returns, joyful, to his own household in Paradise.

5 · Āyāt 10–15 — the record from behind the back #

Wa ammā man ūtiya kitābahu warāʾa ẓahrih · fa-sawfa yadʿū thubūrā · wa yaṣlā saʿīrā · innahu kāna fī ahlihi masrūrā · innahu ẓanna an lan yaḥūr · balā inna rabbahu kāna bihi baṣīrā

"And as for him who is given his record behind his back — he will call out for destruction and burn in a Blaze. Indeed he was, among his family, joyful; indeed he thought he would never return. Yes indeed — his Lord was ever Seeing of him."

WordArabicMeaning
warāʾa ẓahrihiوَرَآءَ ظَهْرِهِۦbehind his back — ظَهْر is the back
warāʾ / amāmوَرَآء · أَمَامbehind and its opposite in front — "alif with a hamzah over it, mīm, alif, mīm"
yadʿūيَدْعُوا۟he will call out — the muḍāriʿ of دَعَا: دَعَا / يَدْعُو
thubūrāثُبُورًاdestruction, ruin
yaṣlāيَصْلَىٰhe will enter it and burn
saʿīrāسَعِيرًاa blazing Fire
masrūrāمَسْرُورًاjoyful, pleased with himself — here, in this world, among his own people
ẓannaظَنَّhe thought, he supposed — a fiʿl māḍī
yaḥūraيَحُورَhe returns — a muḍāriʿ, its māḍī حَارَ: حَارَ / يَحُورُ
baṣīrāبَصِيرًاAll-Seeing, the One who sees

Two grammar points in this block. سَوْفَ comes again in āyah 11, doing the same work as in āyah 8. And in āyah 14, لَّن has come before the muḍāriʿ, so it is negated — لَّن يَحُورَ: he will never return. The man's own thought: "I shall never go back; we are not going back — that is what he supposed." He lived as though there were no returning at all.

The contrast between the two men: the one given his record in his right hand goes to his household among the people of Paradise; this one — given it from behind his back — calls out for destruction and goes into the Fire. And against the man's supposition stands بَلَىٰٓ, "yes indeed": his Lord "has been watching how you live, the whole time. And it is to Him that he is going back."

6 · Āyāt 16–19 — three oaths, and stage upon stage #

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِ · وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ · وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَ · لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ

Fa-lā uqsimu bish-shafaq · wal-layli wa mā wasaq · wal-qamari idhā ttasaq · la-tarkabunna ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaq

"I swear by the twilight glow, and by the night and what it gathers in, and by the moon when it becomes full — you will surely mount stage upon stage."

WordArabicMeaning
uqsimuأُقْسِمُI swear
ash-shafaqٱلشَّفَقِthe red glow of the sky at that hour — the twilight
al-laylٱلَّيْلِthe night — an oath upon the night too
wa mā wasaqوَمَا وَسَقَand what it gathers together, what it draws in and covers
al-qamarٱلْقَمَرِthe moon
idhā ttasaqإِذَا ٱتَّسَقَwhen it becomes full, when it is complete
la-tarkabunnaلَتَرْكَبُنَّyou will surely mount — second person plural
ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaqطَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍstage after stage — from one state to another state, climbing by degrees

The three oaths are the qasam; لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ is what is sworn to.

FormArabicNote
uqsimuأُقْسِمُThe muḍāriʿ in the first person (mutakallim). The verb is أَقْسَمَ, ordinary muḍāriʿ يُقْسِمُ; in the first person the yāʾ is replaced by a hamzah
wasaqaوَسَقَA fiʿl māḍī; its muḍāriʿ is يَسِقُ
ittasaqaٱتَّسَقَFrom the same root as وَسَقَ; here it means that it has become whole, complete
la-tarkabunnaلَتَرْكَبُنَّBuilt on a muḍāriʿ; its māḍī is رَكِبَ (rāʾ · kāf · bāʾ), muḍāriʿ يَرْكَبُ

The nūn at-tawkīd:

PointDetail
What the final nūn isThe nūn at-tawkīd — the nūn of emphasis
Its two formsنُون ثَقِيلَة — the heavy one, when it carries a shaddah; نُون خَفِيفَة — the light one, when it is sākin
Which one is hereIn لَتَرْكَبُنَّ it carries the shaddah, so it is the heavy nūn
Where it attachesNot confined to this verb — it attaches to muḍāriʿ verbs, and likewise to أَمْر (the command form) and نَهْي (the prohibition form)
Its workEmphasis — to make the statement firm

7 · Āyāt 20–25 — the rejecters, and the reward that never ends #

Fa-mā lahum lā yuʾminūn · wa idhā quriʾa ʿalayhimu l-qurʾānu lā yasjudūn · bali lladhīna kafarū yukadhdhibūn · wallāhu aʿlamu bimā yūʿūn · fa-bashshirhum bi-ʿadhābin alīm · illā lladhīna āmanū wa ʿamilu ṣ-ṣāliḥāti lahum ajrun ghayru mamnūn

"So what is the matter with them, that they do not believe? And when the Qurʾān is recited to them, they do not prostrate. Rather, those who disbelieve are denying — and Allah knows best what they keep within. So give them tidings of a painful punishment — except those who believed and did righteous deeds: for them is a reward unending."

WordArabicMeaning
lā yuʾminūnلَا يُؤْمِنُونَthey do not believe, they do not accept faith — a muḍāriʿ manfī
quriʾaقُرِئَit was recited — the majhūl of قَرَأَ
lā yasjudūnلَا يَسْجُدُونَthey do not prostrate — from سَجَدَ, muḍāriʿ يَسْجُدُ
balبَلِrather
kafarūكَفَرُوا۟they disbelieved — plural of كَفَرَ, the wāw at the end marking the plural
yukadhdhibūnيُكَذِّبُونَthey call it a lie, they go on denying — from كَذَّبَ, muḍāriʿ يُكَذِّبُ
aʿlamuأَعْلَمُknows best
bimā yūʿūnبِمَا يُوعُونَwhat they keep concealed — what they hide away in their hearts
bashshirبَشِّرْgive tidings — an amr, from بَشَّرَ, "he gave glad tidings"
ʿadhāb alīmعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍa painful punishment
āmanūءَامَنُوا۟they believed — plural of ءَامَنَ
ʿamilūعَمِلُوا۟they did — from عَمِلَ, muḍāriʿ يَعْمَلُ
aṣ-ṣāliḥātٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِthe righteous deeds
ajrأَجْرٌa reward, a wage
ghayru mamnūnغَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍunending, never cut off

The negating particle lā. Twice in this block a muḍāriʿ is negated by لَا at the front — لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ and لَا يَسْجُدُونَ; lā is the particle that gives the sense of "not", and يُؤْمِنُ in the plural is يُؤْمِنُونَ.

Aʿlam as an ism tafḍīl. أَعْلَمُ is an ism tafḍīl, on the wazn أَفْعَل. Any word put on the أَفْعَل pattern comes out this way:

VerbIsm tafḍīlSense
عَلِمَأَعْلَمthe one who knows best
نَصَرَأَنْصَرthe one who helps best
كَرُمَأَكْرَم—

ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ can be taken generally — "the rejecters."

8 · The lessons of the sūrah #

Nine lessons close the sūrah, in this order.

#Lesson
1The hereafter is a certainty — the sūrah's whole thrust is to affirm it; everything named after death belongs to it, the sky splitting apart, the earth being spread out
2It reminds man how temporary this life is — the pleasures of this world come to an end, and every human being must, without exception, go and meet his Lord; the āyah that states it is يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ
3Man's life is a journey that comes to an end — whether we do good or do evil, we go there, meet our Lord, and are made to answer for it, and the reckoning follows how a man lived here
4Two outcomes. If he lived in the good way, the record comes into his right hand — an easy questioning, and he returns to his family in joy, one of the people of Paradise. The one given it from behind his back calls out for destruction and goes into the Fire
5A clear warning about the consequences of our deeds — however we live in this world, the results that match it will fall out accordingly; the sūrah is the warning given in advance
6Life moves in stages. "Stage upon stage" is the journey of life, step by step — birth, childhood, death, the hereafter, being raised up again: "you will certainly pass from one state into another"
7Against arrogance and heedlessness. The examples brought here are of things that come about gradually; nothing here is permanent. "Indeed he was joyful among his family; indeed he thought he would never return" — āyāt 13 and 14 — shows the danger of being careless about the hereafter
8The oaths affirm Allah's power. By swearing upon the evening, the night, the moon and the rest, the sūrah affirms Allah's majesty and His dominion, and calls man to submit to the One who created the universe
9Firm faith and patience are what are given value — those who believed and did righteous deeds: theirs is a reward that is never cut off

In sum: the sūrah is "about the events that will take place on the Day of Resurrection" and, above all, "about the condition of receiving one's record in the right hand. May Allah grant all of us that good fortune."

Cold-recall crib: Sūrat al-Inshiqāq (84) entire — the four signs, man labouring toward his Lord, the two records, the three oaths and ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaq, and the reward that is never cut off. These rows are the exam-bait of this lesson.

PointWhat to remember
Feminine agreementٱنشَقَّتْ · أَذِنَتْ · حُقَّتْ · مُدَّتْ · أَلْقَتْ · تَخَلَّتْ all come feminine, because ٱلسَّمَآء and ٱلْأَرْض are feminine
Māḍī majhūlمُدَّتْ · أُوتِىَ · قُرِئَ — past-tense passives
MulāqīAn ism fāʿil from لَاقَى / يُلَاقِي; maṣdar مُلَاقَاة, and لِقَاء also comes; لَاقَى ends in an alif maqṣūrah
Future particlessīn and sawfa both come before a muḍāriʿ and give the future — يَقُولُ → سَيَقُولُ
Negating the muḍāriʿلَّن (لَّن يَحُورَ) and لَا (لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ · لَا يَسْجُدُونَ)
