What this lesson covers
The most beloved deeds (ṣalāh on time → birr al-wālidayn → jihad) · al-Bukhari's Bāb al-Birr wa-ṣ-Ṣila & its heading-verse · Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ & his mother · no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator · mother 3× then father · serving parents is your jihad.
Kitāb al-Adab opens with two hadiths on parents. Block one: Ibn Masʿūd's hadith on the three most beloved deeds (prayer on time → kindness to parents → jihad), and why "best deed" is answered differently elsewhere. Block two: al-Bukhari's chapter, its heading-verse, and the Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ story — plus the "mother, mother, mother, then father" hadith and "serving your parents is your jihad." The hadith wordings, the two verses, and the ranking are the most testable content.

1 · Where we are — Kitāb al-Adab begins #

2 · The first hadith — the most beloved deed (Ibn Masʿūd) #

Reported from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu:

Saʾaltu-n-Nabiyya ﷺ: ayyu-l-ʿamali aḥabbu ilā-llāh? Qāla: aṣ-ṣalātu ʿalā waqtihā. Qultu: thumma ayyun? Qāla: birru-l-wālidayn. Qultu: thumma ayyun? Qāla: al-jihādu fī sabīlillāh.

"I asked the Prophet ﷺ: Which deed is most beloved to Allah? He said: Prayer at its (proper) time. I said: Then which? He said: Kindness to parents. I said: Then which? He said: Striving in the path of Allah."

The ordered answer — commit it exactly:

#The deedArabic
1Prayer at its appointed timeaṣ-ṣalātu ʿalā waqtihā
2Kindness to parentsbirru-l-wālidayn
3Striving in the path of Allahal-jihādu fī sabīlillāh

3 · The word "birr", and al-Bukhari's chapter title #

The root b-r-r carries several senses — keep them apart:

FormMeaningAnchor
barrland / shore"…wa-ḥamalnāhum fī-l-barri wa-l-baḥr" — "We carried them over land and sea" (al-Isrāʾ 17:70)
burrwheat—
birrrighteousness / doing goodthe sense meant in this chapter

4 · The verse al-Bukhari sets in the heading #

True to his method — _Fiqh al-Bukhārī fī tarājimih_ (his juristic reasoning lives in his chapter headings) — al-Bukhari places a fitting Qurʾānic verse into the heading:

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حُسْنًا

Wa-waṣṣaynā-l-insāna bi-wālidayhi ḥusnan — "And We have enjoined upon man goodness toward his parents" (Sūrat al-ʿAnkabūt 29:8).

5 · The story behind the verse — Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ & his mother #

Al-Bukhari cites the report of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu:

The verse continues (the ruling the story teaches):

وَإِن جَاهَدَاكَ لِتُشْرِكَ بِي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا

Wa-in jāhadāka li-tushrika bī mā laysa laka bihi ʿilmun fa-lā tuṭiʿhumā — "But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them" (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:8). And the parallel verse: wa-ṣāḥibhumā fī-d-dunyā maʿrūfan — "yet accompany them in this world with kindness" (Sūrat Luqmān 31:15).

So even if parents strive to pull you into shirk, you do not obey them in that — but you still treat them well and serve them in all worldly matters.

6 · The principle — no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator #

From this the scholars form a principle (qāʿidah):

لَا طَاعَةَ لِمَخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْخَالِقِ

Lā ṭāʿata li-makhlūqin fī maʿṣiyati-l-Khāliq — "There is no obedience to any created being in disobedience to the Creator." In anything that would mean disobeying Allah, no creature — not even a parent — is obeyed; in everything else, obey and serve them. This is the ruling al-Bukhari intends by his heading-verse.

7 · Unpacking deed #1 — prayer at its appointed time, and its wisdom #

Inna-ṣ-ṣalāta kānat ʿalā-l-muʾminīna kitāban mawqūtā — "Indeed, prayer is decreed upon the believers at fixed times" (Sūrat an-Nisāʾ 4:103).

8 · Unpacking deed #2 — kindness to parents (birr al-wālidayn) #

Birr al-wālidayn includes:

The one who earns his parents' love, support, and duʿāʾ — his life goes well. A parent's pleasure (riḍā), duʿāʾ, and blessing are of enormous weight; failing to spend on or care for them invites their displeasure and injustice. Be careful and attentive with your parents' hearts.

9 · Unpacking deed #3 — jihad, and the apparent contradiction #

Examples:

Questioner / settingProphet's ﷺ answer
A man: "Ayyu-l-ʿamali afḍal?"īmān in Allah & His Messenger → then jihad → then an accepted Hajj (ḥajj mabrūr)
A man with no wealth, asking about Hajj"al-Ḥajju-l-mabrūru laysa lahu jazāʾun illā-l-jannah" — an accepted Hajj has no reward but Paradise
When jihad is farḍ ʿayn (an individual obligation)jihad is then the best deed

How Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī & Imam an-Nawawī reconcile it — two answers:

  1. Ikhtilāf aḥwāl as-sāʾilīn — the differing circumstances of the questioners: each person was told the deed most suited to him (one bound to Hajj, one able for jihad, one whose parents needed care).
  2. Difference according to the time — what is "best" shifts with the moment (e.g. when jihad becomes farḍ ʿayn).

Just as a good teacher accounts for differences among students, so did the Prophet ﷺ — hence no real conflict.

10 · The second hadith — "your mother, your mother, your mother, then your father" #

This hadith concerns aḥaqqu-n-nāsi bi-ḥusni ṣuḥbatī — who is most deserving of one's good companionship:

Jāʾa rajulun ilā Rasūlillāhi ﷺ fa-qāla: yā Rasūlallāh, man aḥaqqu-n-nāsi bi-ḥusni ṣaḥābatī? Qāla: ummuka. Qāla: thumma man? Qāla: thumma ummuka. Qāla: thumma man? Qāla: thumma ummuka. Qāla: thumma man? Qāla: thumma abūka.

A man asked: "Who among people is most deserving of my good companionship?" He said: "Your mother." "Then who?" "Then your mother." "Then who?" "Then your mother." "Then who?" "Then your father." — the mother named three times, the father once, showing the mother's exalted rank.

11 · The wisdom — why the mother threefold #

12 · Serving your parents is your jihad #

This links to another chapter: Bāb: lā yujāhidu illā bi-idhni-l-abawayn — "one does not go to jihad except with the permission of the parents." Narrated from ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr raḍiyallāhu ʿanhumā:

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَاسْتَأْذَنَهُ فِي الْجِهَادِ، فَقَالَ: أَحَيٌّ وَالِدَاكَ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ. قَالَ: فَفِيهِمَا فَجَاهِدْ.

Jāʾa rajulun ilā-n-Nabiyyi ﷺ fa-staʾdhanahu fī-l-jihādi, fa-qāla: aḥayyun wālidāk? Qāla: naʿam. Qāla: fa-fīhimā fa-jāhid.

A man sought permission to go for jihad. The Prophet ﷺ asked: "Are your parents alive?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then strive [in serving] them" (fa-fīhimā fa-jāhid). That is — serving your parents and tending to their needs is your jihad, and it is the greater striving. Be truthful and put in real effort in their service.
