Third Semester-2 class (video 23, Sheikh Haris Rashadi). This class finishes the chapter on tayammum (dry purification with earth) — recapping its pillars, then its conditions (shurūṭ), its permitting causes (asbāb), its sunnahs, its nullifiers (mubṭilāt), the two disputed questions (what counts as ṣaʿīd; one strike or two), and the case of the person who has neither water nor earth. The shurūṭ/asbāb lists, the sunnahs minus maḍmaḍah and istinshāq, one tayammum per prayer, and "whatever breaks wuḍūʾ breaks tayammum" are the testable core. The Sheikh himself called it a short lesson, a light subject.

0 · The opening (context only — not testable fiqh)

The recording opens with about ten minutes of salāms, late joiners, and logistics — who has joined, a link that was shared, which date the last class fell on, and whether the session was being recorded (the Sheikh checked his phone was capturing the audio). None of this is lesson material. The teaching begins where he places the class in the syllabus: there had been coordination problems the previous week (a session clashed with a Hadees class), and "we have come to the end of the tayammum chapter — there is a balance left, and its remainder we finish today. Once tayammum is done, the syllabus moves on to the next lesson."

This transcript is noticeably rougher than the ghusl class: the speaker code-switches Tamil / Arabic / English and several stretches survive only in outline. Where the recording gave only a fragment, that is said plainly below rather than filled in.

1 · Recap: the pillars (arkān) of tayammum

Studied in the previous class and recalled here:

#RuknArabic
1The intentionالنِّيَّة
2Wiping the faceمَسْحُ الوَجْه
3Wiping the hands up to the elbowsمَسْحُ اليَدَيْنِ إِلَى المِرْفَقَيْن
4The order in which it is doneالتَّرْتِيب

2 · The conditions (shurūṭ) of tayammum

Also recapped "briefly":

  1. Search for water only after the prayer time has entered — one looks for water (or for earth) after the prayer's time has begun.
  2. The earth must be clean, pure earth (ṣaʿīd ṭāhir).
  3. Any najāsah (impurity) on the body must be removed first.
  4. As the text puts it, "strive to determine the direction of the qiblah" — the qiblah is to be worked out before praying.

3 · The causes (asbāb) that permit tayammum

Asbāb al-tayammum = the reasons that make tayammum allowed:

#CauseDetail
1Water not availableThere simply is none
2Water far awayIt exists but is out of reach
3No means to draw itNo vessel, no rope
4Physical reason — illness or injuryA severe illness or a wound, where using water would worsen the sickness or delay recovery
5Severe coldCold severe enough to excuse the use of water

For these reasons tayammum may be performed. The evidence (dalīl) for it comes later in the class (§7).

4 · The sunnahs of tayammum

The rule: they are the sunnahs of wuḍūʾ, minus two

Most of the sunnahs of wuḍūʾ apply to tayammum too — with the obvious exceptions of rinsing the mouth (maḍmaḍah) and drawing water into the nose (istinshāq): you do not put earth into the mouth or the nose. Everything else carries over — beginning with bismillāh, and so on. The Sheikh repeated the point later: "all of these sunnahs come from wuḍūʾ."

The particular sunnahs named in class

#SunnahNote
1Muwālāt — continuityWiping the face and the hands one after another, without a break. Wiping the face and then coming back late for the hands is not the sunnah. It is sunnah, not obligatory — delaying does not invalidate the tayammum
2The shahādah afterwardsAs in wuḍūʾ (this stretch was partly garbled)
3Running the earth between the fingersAnd doing the same for a person you are helping
4Performing it for one who cannotIf a person is unable to do his own tayammum, someone else should do it for him — working the earth between his fingers as well
5Lightening the amount of earthStrike, then shake the hands off so the large particles fall away and only a fine dust remains; on the face it should be light
6Beginning with the right handThe right first, as in wuḍūʾ
7Spreading the fingers when strikingNot striking with the fingers closed — spread them, so there is enough dust on the hand to reach both the hands and the face. Sunnah, not obligatory

The hadith of ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir — strike once and shake

Read from the book: the Messenger of Allah said to ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu, "It would have been sufficient for you to do like this" — then he struck the ground once with both palms and shook them.

إِنَّمَا كَانَ يَكْفِيكَ أَنْ تَقُولَ بِيَدَيْكَ هَكَذَا

innamā kāna yakfīka an taqūla bi-yadayka hākadhā — al-Bukhārī 347, Muslim 368.

So after striking, one shakes the two hands and the coarse particles fall away — or else blows lightly on them, which likewise removes the excess. Note that we are striking earth, not water.

5 · Tayammum is bound to the prayer time — one tayammum per prayer

Worked example

There is no water, only earth. You perform tayammum and pray ʿAṣr. Now, for the make-up of Ẓuhr, you must perform a fresh, separate tayammum — that first tayammum does not carry over to the second prayer.

Contrast with wuḍūʾ

Wuḍūʾ is not like this — wuḍūʾ may be performed at any time, and if it is not broken you may pray all five prayers on that one wuḍūʾ. Tayammum cannot: it is a rukhṣah (concession) and a substitute, tied to the time of the prayer it was made for.

A student asked what happens if, after making tayammum, the prayer's time ends — the answer given was: perform a fresh tayammum. The rest of that exchange (a person repeating tayammum several times, and tayammum for the funeral (janāzah) prayer) is very fragmentary in the recording and is not reported here beyond that answer.

6 · Tayammum as a substitute for the obligatory ghusl

7 · The evidence (dalīl)

Qurʾān — Sūrat al-Māʾidah 5:6

فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُم مِّنْهُ

"…fa-lam tajidū māʾan fa-tayammamū ṣaʿīdan ṭayyiban fa-msaḥū bi-wujūhikum wa-aydīkum minhu""…and you find no water, then betake yourselves to clean earth and wipe your faces and your hands with it" (al-Māʾidah 5:6).

Hadith — ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu

The Prophet saw a man keeping apart from the people, not praying, and asked what kept him from praying with them. He said, "I became in a state of janābah and there is no water." He said, "Use the clean earth, for it is sufficient for you."

عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّعِيدِ فَإِنَّهُ يَكْفِيكَ

ʿalayka bi-l-ṣaʿīdi fa-innahu yakfīk — al-Bukhārī 344, Muslim 682.

The Sheikh's paraphrase: "Why are you sitting apart saying there is no water? Go — take the clean earth — that is enough for you."

Hadith — ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir

See §4 above (one strike with both palms, then shaking them).

8 · The nullifiers (mubṭilāt) of tayammum

Rule 1 — everything that breaks wuḍūʾ breaks tayammum

The class restated this twice as the important point. The four nullifiers of wuḍūʾ (nawāqiḍ) were recalled:

#Nullifier of wuḍūʾ
1Anything that exits from the front or back passage
2Sleep (without being firmly seated)
3Skin-to-skin contact with a non-maḥram woman
4Becoming junub (janābah)

Rule 2 — the arrival of water ends it

The illustration given in class: tayammum is like a substitute hall used when the main hall is unavailable. Once the original hall is available, the substitute has no place at all.

Rule 3 — apostasy (riddah)

Apostasy — changing one's religion, leaving Islam — invalidates the tayammum: it becomes void and must be performed again. (The surrounding sentences here were garbled; the ruling itself is clear in the recording.)

9 · The disputed questions (khilāf)

The Sheikh flagged these as the "advanced, or rather disputed" matters at the close of the chapter.

(a) What counts as "earth" — ṣaʿīd?

The translation problem first. Render it "sand" and you mean grains of sand — and sand is not dust. Render it "dust" and you mean only the fine powder, without the soil. So neither is right: the best rendering is "earth" — ordinary soil mixed with dust (Tamil: puḻuti kalanta maṇ).

ViewPosition
Imām al-Shāfiʿī raḥimahullāhHolds it necessary that there be actual dust that clings to the hand — "earth" means dust-bearing soil
The other viewAnything fixed to the earth and its surfaces will do — whatever is on the ground and fixed to it, stone or rock, is acceptable
The Ḥanafī madhhabNo dust is needed — even where there is no dust one may strike and perform tayammum
Ḥanafīs vs the JumhūrFramed at the end as two opinions on "earth" versus "surface": the Ḥanafīs say soil is not required, any surface suffices; the Jumhūr (majority) hold otherwise

Practical cases raised: when it rains and the ground is wet, keep some dry dust set aside, as most people do. And in some places (the Gulf was the example) there is only sand and no dust — which is where the Ḥanafī position is reached for.

(b) One strike or two?

The Sheikh called this a big dispute recently.

ViewPosition
Shāfiʿī (what this class studies)Two strikes — one for the face, one for the hands
One report in the Ḥanbalī madhhab, and some contemporary scholarsOne strike suffices — they point you to the hadiths (of ʿAmmār) and tell you to read them for yourself
A further view mentionedThe hands are not needed at all — only the face. Mentioned in passing and not developed
His adab ruling on it: if you are convinced by the one-strike view, there is no problem in following it — just do not quarrel about it. "The religion is not something to fight over; the religion is about acting on what you have."

10 · The one who has neither water nor earth

The closing case: a person on a flight with no dust, or in a confined place he cannot leave — he can make neither wuḍūʾ nor tayammum. (The jurists call this fāqid al-ṭahūrayn — one who lacks both purifying agents.) Other examples given: prison, a locked cell with no way out, no water and no earth at all. The prayer is still obligatory.

The three views

#ViewWhat you do
1You need not pray now, but must make it upPray it whenever it becomes possibleqaḍāʾ
2You need not pray and need not make it upNothing at that time, nothing later
3Pray as much as you are able, then make it upPray at its proper time, however you are able, and make it up afterwards when water or earth becomes available

The Sheikh's ruling: the third is the correct one of the three — we pray at the proper time out of respect for the time, doing the tayammum as best we can, and repeat it afterwards.

The Ḥanafī way out, and planning ahead

What this class did NOT cover

Cold-recall tables — the 4 arkān, the 4 shurūṭ, the asbāb list, "wuḍūʾ's sunnahs minus maḍmaḍah and istinshāq", one tayammum per prayer, and "whatever breaks wuḍūʾ breaks tayammum + water arriving" are the whole game. The two khilāf questions and the three views on fāqid al-ṭahūrayn are the exam-bait extras.

The 4 pillars (arkān)

#RuknArabic
1Intentionالنِّيَّة
2Wipe the faceمَسْحُ الوَجْه
3Wipe the hands to the elbowsمَسْحُ اليَدَيْنِ إِلَى المِرْفَقَيْن

The 4 conditions (shurūṭ)

#Condition
1Search for water after the prayer time has entered
2Clean, pure earth (ṣaʿīd ṭāhir)
3Najāsah removed from the body
4Determine the qiblah

The causes (asbāb) that permit tayammum

#Cause
1No water available
2Water far away
3No means to draw it (no vessel, no rope)
4Severe illness / wound — water would worsen it or delay recovery
5Severe cold

The sunnahs

RuleDetail
The master ruleAll the sunnahs of wuḍūʾ carry over — begin with bismillāh, right hand first, etc.
The two exceptionsMaḍmaḍah (rinsing the mouth) and istinshāq (water into the nose) — no earth in mouth or nose
MuwālātFace then hands without a break — sunnah, not obligatory; delay does not invalidate
FingersSpread the fingers when striking; run the earth between them
HelpingDo it for one who cannot do it himself
Lighten the earthShake the hands (or blow lightly) so the coarse particles fall — a light, fine dust

Timing rule — tayammum vs wuḍūʾ

ItemTayammumWuḍūʾ
When performedOnly after the prayer's time has enteredAny time
How many prayersOne tayammum per prayer (each farḍ, each qaḍāʾ)All five prayers on one wuḍūʾ if unbroken
NatureRukhṣah — a substituteThe original

Worked example: tayammum → prayed ʿAṣr; now the qaḍāʾ of Ẓuhr needs a fresh, separate tayammum. · Prayer time ended after tayammum? → make a fresh tayammum.

Tayammum in place of ghusl

CaseRuling
No water for the ghuslTayammum substitutes for the bath too
A wound / a spot that cannot be washedCover it, wash the rest, tayammum for the covered part
One excuse, one spotOne tayammum suffices — no second one needed

The nullifiers (mubṭilāt)

#Nullifier
1Everything that breaks wuḍūʾ — the 4 nawāqiḍ: exit from front/back passage · sleep · touching a non-maḥram woman · janābah
2Water becoming available — the "substitute hall" rule: once the original is back, the substitute has no place
3Apostasy (riddah) — the tayammum is void and must be redone

Water arriving — the three timings

When the water arrivesRuling
Before the prayerTayammum is invalid — make wuḍūʾ
During the prayerDo not break it — complete the prayer
After the salāmThe prayer stands, no repeat — wuḍūʾ for the next prayer

The evidence (dalīl)

Khilāf 1 — what counts as ṣaʿīd?

ViewPosition
Best translation"Earth" = soil mixed with dust — not "sand" (grains only), not "dust" (powder only)
Imām al-ShāfiʿīDust that clings to the hand is necessary
Other viewAnything fixed to the earth — including stone / rock
ḤanafīNo dust needed — any surface
Framing at the end"Earth" (Jumhūr) vs "surface" (Ḥanafī)

Practical: when it rains, keep dry dust set aside; where there is only sand (e.g. the Gulf), the Ḥanafī view is the way out.

Khilāf 2 — one strike or two?

ViewPosition
Shāfiʿī (this class)TWO strikes — one for the face, one for the hands
A Ḥanbalī report + some contemporary scholarsONE strike suffices (they cite the ʿAmmār hadiths)
A further opinion, mentioned onlyFace only — hands not needed

Adab: follow the one-strike view if convinced — but do not quarrel over it.

The one with neither water nor earth (fāqid al-ṭahūrayn)

#ViewWhat you do
1Do not pray now, but make it upPray it when it becomes possible (qaḍāʾ)
2Neither pray nor make it upNothing then, nothing later
3Pray as you are able, then make it upThe Sheikh's ruling: the third is correct

Ḥanafī option: for that short period take the Ḥanafī view — any surface, strike it twice (e.g. the aircraft seat-back), pray. · Plan ahead: board at Maghrib, land at ʿIshāʾ — so pray before boarding if there is no way en route.
