What this lesson covers
1 · Why this chapter is the one that matters #
Prayer is the act of worship that is a conversation. Put as a chain:
| If you want to… | …then |
|---|---|
| speak to Allah | pray |
| have Allah speak to you | recite the Qurʾān |
And the reason the chapter carries the weight it does:
Prayer is the connection. Allah says:
أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِى
Aqim aṣ-ṣalāta li-dhikrī — "Establish the prayer for My remembrance."
2 · The problem the chapter is aimed at #
You can complete a prayer and have been absent from all of it.
- You make the takbīr and then stand there thinking about something else.
- You recite on auto-pilot — like a tape recorder: memorised sound coming out with no meaning attached.
al-Ghazālī's test: if you recite the supplications and adhkār of the prayer without understanding their meanings, how will khushūʿ ever come? Understanding is not an optional refinement — it is the mechanism.
3 · The seven stations (maqāmāt) — the spine of the lesson #
These are stages towards nearness to Allah, and all seven must be present for the prayer to be complete.
| # | Station | In short |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | مَقام الطَّهارة — maqām aṭ-ṭahārah | Purity — and it has two sides, only one of which the Ṭahārah chapter covered |
| 2 | مَقام الحُضور — maqām al-ḥuḍūr | Presence — the consciousness that you are standing before Allah |
| 3 | مَقام الاتِّباع — maqām al-ittibāʿ | Following — is the prayer as the Prophet ﷺ prayed it? |
| 4 | مَقام الإخلاص — maqām al-ikhlāṣ | Sincerity — for Allah alone, not for display |
| 5 | مَقام الانكِسار — maqām al-inkisār | Brokenness, reverence — the slave before his Master |
| 6 | مَقام الخَوف — maqām al-khawf | Fear — consciousness of Allah's greatness, majesty and power |
| 7 | مَقام الرَّجاء — maqām ar-rajāʾ | Hope — that He accepts what you managed |
4 · Station 1 — ṭahārah, and the half we never studied #
| What it is | |
|---|---|
| Outer purity | The body clean, the clothing clean, the limbs clean — and the obligatory ghusl where it is due. This is what the Ṭahārah chapter taught. |
| Inner purity | The heart clean of deceit, arrogance and vanity, and regarding other people as beneath you. "Diseases of this kind arise in connection with the inner self." |
Both must be clean. A body washed for a heart that was never washed does not complete this station.
5 · Station 2 — ḥuḍūr, presence #
The consciousness that you are standing before Allah, held in the mind from beginning to end.
This is the conscious / unconscious distinction: in the right state, whoever comes or goes is nothing to you — there is no other subject in your mind. It is like going to someone's house and sitting down with him one to one.
What breaks this station:
- looking about you
- fidgeting with your hands
- dozing
- yawning
- letting your thoughts run somewhere else
6 · Station 3 — ittibāʿ, following the Prophet ﷺ #
Is the prayer I pray the prayer the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated? From the first takbīr to the salām, is every part of it as it should be?
«صَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي»
Ṣallū kamā raʾaytumūnī uṣallī — "Pray as you have seen me pray."
7 · Station 4 — ikhlāṣ, sincerity #
Not for anyone's sake and not for display — I pray for Allah alone.
8 · Station 5 — inkisār, standing as a slave #
I stand before my Rabb. A Rabb is the Master; I am the slave. The question the station asks is: how does a slave stand before his master?
The physical acts of the prayer say exactly this:
| Act | What it says |
|---|---|
| The takbīr | I am Allah's slave; to Allah I have surrendered. It is made before Allah, never before people — there is no room for self-glorification in it |
| The rukūʿ | Bowing the head, for Allah's sake |
| The sujūd | "Before Allah I am nothing." |
The book renders this station as "reverence"; its sense is humility.
9 · Stations 6 and 7 — fear, and hope #
Sixth — khawf, fear. If we do not pray properly, Allah may punish — and if Allah begins to punish, no one can prevent it. The book's wording: to be conscious of Allah's greatness, majesty and power.
Seventh — rajāʾ, hope. The counterweight, and the note the list ends on:
10 · Quality before quantity #
A direct instruction, and the order matters:
Voluntary prayer — tahajjud and the rest — is the second thing, not the first. The target is to take specific prayers and make them high-premium quality: Ṣubḥ's two rakʿah and its sunnah, and of Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ, the four-rakʿah ones — make one of them a high-quality prayer, then build the habit.
11 · The four kinds of prayer #
| # | Kind | Who prays it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | صَلاة المُنافِقين — ṣalāt al-munāfiqīn | The prayer of the hypocrites |
| 2 | صَلاة السّاهين — ṣalāt as-sāhīn (also ṣalāt al-ghāfilīn) | The forgetful, heedless prayer — you are not a hypocrite, but the consciousness is simply absent: auto-pilot |
| 3 | صَلاة المُجاهِدين — ṣalāt al-mujāhidīn | The prayer of one who is trying: the mind wanders, the consciousness comes and goes, other thoughts arrive — and he fights. "Fighting with your nafs, with your shayṭān" |
| 4 | صَلاة الخاشِعين — ṣalāt al-khāshiʿīn | The prayer of the truly humbled |
And the distinction that follows: the farḍ is discharged the moment you give the salām — that obligation is met. But discharging the obligation is not the point of the prayer. The point is Allah's remembrance.
12 · What ṣalāh actually is #
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where does the prayer begin and end? | From the takbīr to the taslīm — the takbīrat al-iḥrām (Allāhu akbar) to the giving of the salām |
| What does the word mean? | Ṣalāh means duʿā — asking of Allah, supplication |
| What is it made of? | Three components: 1 duʿā · 2 dhikr · 3 tilāwah (reciting the Qurʾān) |
The wisdom of prayer, in the book's own words:
And from the wuḍūʾ chapter: as each limb is washed, the sins that limb committed fall away — and in the prayer the cleansing goes further.
13 · Where the five daily prayers come from #
Prayer was the practice of the prophets from the very beginning — Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi as-salām and Mūsā ʿalayhi as-salām are named. Before the five were made obligatory, the practice was two rakʿah.
Then al-Isrāʾ wa-l-Miʿrāj, in the ḥadīth of al-Bukhārī and Muslim:
- The roof of the Prophet's ﷺ house was opened and Jibrīl ʿalayhi as-salām came to him.
- The journey to Bayt al-Maqdis and the ascent to meet Allah.
- Fifty prayers were first prescribed; after the meetings with Mūsā ʿalayhi as-salām and the returns to Allah, fifty were brought down to five — and five are obligatory.
- The event took place eighteen months before the Hijrah, and that is the mashrūʿiyyah of the five daily prayers — their being legislated as an obligation.
14 · The evidences for the five #
In the Qurʾān the five prayers are not stated directly — they come implicitly.
إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا
Inna ṣ-ṣalāta kānat ʿalā l-muʾminīna kitāban mawqūtā (an-Nisāʾ 4:103)
"Indeed, prayer has been prescribed upon the believers at fixed times." — kitāban mawqūtā, fixed times: within those times we pray.
There is also an āyah in Sūrat ar-Rūm in which, in Ibn ʿAbbās's words, the five prayers are contained — the evening and the morning and the rest.
Explicitly, the evidence is in the Sunnah — two ḥadīths:
| # | The evidence |
|---|---|
| 1 | Muʿādh ibn Jabal raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu sent to Yemen — call them first to Allah, to tawḥīd, and then the prayer. |
| 2 | The bedouin (aʿrābī) who asked, "how much must I pray?" — He ﷺ said: "Five prayers in a day and a night." The man asked, "Is there anything more than this upon me?" He ﷺ said: "No — unless you volunteer something extra." |
The further ḥadīths the class read from the book at this point were not recorded.
15 · The Ḥanafī dispute — is witr obligatory? #
A genuinely disputed question.
| Position | |
|---|---|
| The Ḥanafīs | Witr is wājib, and so are the two rakʿah before Ṣubḥ |
| The Shāfiʿīs — "we" | Only the five daily prayers are obligatory. The Ṣubḥ sunnah is sunnah; the witr is sunnah |
16 · Abandoning the prayer #
Two cases must be separated:
| The case | The ruling |
|---|---|
| He refuses — says "I will not pray" while understanding it is an obligation | This is the case that leads to the apostasy ruling |
| He leaves it out of laziness | He never becomes a murtadd. He must repent, and afterwards he must be brought back to the prayer |
The schools:
| Position on abandoning the prayer out of laziness | |
|---|---|
| The Ḥanbalīs | You are not a Muslim |
| The Shāfiʿīs and the jumhūr | Abandoning the prayer does not make him a murtadd |
And the two conditions on the execution ruling — both essential, and both easy to drop:
- It applies only where there is an Islamic government. "None of this arises otherwise."
- He is first given time and called to repent. The book's wording: "The ruler must order him to repent. If he repents and establishes the prayer, then that is sufficient. Otherwise he is to be executed as an apostate."
17 · Closing — the thirst for knowledge #
You have it easy. In earlier times people travelled from country to country and sat at the teacher's feet; now we study from wherever we are — so we must give it proper respect and not undermine it.
Scope card #
| Item | Answer |
|---|---|
| What changes here | Ṭahārah is closed (L01 nifās · L02 ghusl · L03 tayammum); ṣalāh opens |
| Base text | al-Fiqh al-Manhajī |
The seven stations — in order #
| # | Arabic | Name | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | مَقام الطَّهارة | maqām aṭ-ṭahārah | Purity — two sides. Outer: body, clothing, limbs, ghusl. Inner: free of deceit, arrogance/vanity, looking down on others. Both must be clean |
| 2 | مَقام الحُضور | maqām al-ḥuḍūr | Presence — holding the awareness that you are standing before Allah |
| 3 | مَقام الاتِّباع | maqām al-ittibāʿ | Following — is the prayer as the Prophet ﷺ prayed it, takbīr to salām? |
| 4 | مَقام الإخلاص | maqām al-ikhlāṣ | Sincerity — for Allah alone, not for display |
| 5 | مَقام الانكِسار | maqām al-inkisār | Brokenness / reverence — the slave before his Master |
| 6 | مَقام الخَوف | maqām al-khawf | Fear — conscious of Allah's greatness, majesty and power |
| 7 | مَقام الرَّجاء | maqām ar-rajāʾ | Hope — that He accepts what you managed |
Station details worth having cold #
| Point | Answer |
|---|---|
| The half of purity Ṭahārah never taught | Inner purity — deceit, arrogance/vanity, regarding others as beneath you |
| The ḥuḍūr analogy | Standing before the president — proper, well-behaved, eyes on him, from entering to leaving |
| What breaks ḥuḍūr | Looking about · fidgeting with the hands · dozing · yawning · letting the thoughts run |
| The ittibāʿ trap | Praying in whatever style you picked up as a child instead of the sunnah — double-check your own prayer |
| What the takbīr says | I am Allah's slave; to Allah I have surrendered. Made before Allah, never before people — no self-glorification |
| What the sujūd says | "Before Allah I am nothing" |
Two texts to know #
| Arabic | Meaning | Source |
|---|---|---|
| أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِى | "Establish the prayer for My remembrance" | Qurʾān |
| «صَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي» | "Pray as you have seen me pray" | Ḥadīth |
The four kinds of prayer #
| # | Arabic | Who |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | صَلاة المُنافِقين | The hypocrites' prayer |
| 2 | صَلاة السّاهين (also الغافِلين) | The heedless — not a hypocrite, but the consciousness is simply absent: auto-pilot |
| 3 | صَلاة المُجاهِدين | One who is trying — the mind wanders and he fights it: fighting the nafs and the shayṭān |
| 4 | صَلاة الخاشِعين | The truly humbled |
What ṣalāh is #
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| From where to where? | Takbīr → taslīm — the takbīrat al-iḥrām to the salām |
| What does the word mean? | Duʿā — supplication. Duʿā is the main part of the prayer |
| Its three components | 1 duʿā · 2 dhikr · 3 tilāwah |
| Its first stated wisdom | It reminds you of your true identity — that you are a servant belonging to Allah |
| From the wuḍūʾ chapter | As each limb is washed, the sins that limb committed fall away |
Where the five come from #
| Item | Answer |
|---|---|
| Before the five | The prophets prayed — Ibrāhīm and Mūsā named; the practice was two rakʿah |
| The event | Al-Isrāʾ wa-l-Miʿrāj — the roof opened, Jibrīl came, then Bayt al-Maqdis and the ascent |
| The numbers | Fifty prayers → five, after the meetings with Mūsā |
| When | Eighteen months before the Hijrah — the mashrūʿiyyah of the five |
| Collection | al-Bukhārī and Muslim |
The evidences #
| Source | Status | The evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Qurʾān | Implicit, not explicit | إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا (an-Nisāʾ 4:103) — kitāban mawqūtā, fixed times. Also an āyah of Sūrat ar-Rūm in which, per Ibn ʿAbbās, the five are contained |
| Sunnah (1) | Explicit | Muʿādh ibn Jabal sent to Yemen — call them to Allah first, then the prayer |
| Sunnah (2) | Explicit | The bedouin: "how much must I pray?" → "Five prayers in a day and a night." "Anything more?" → "No — unless you volunteer." |
The Ḥanafī witr dispute #
| Position | |
|---|---|
| Ḥanafīs | Witr is wājib, and so are the two rakʿah before Ṣubḥ |
| Shāfiʿīs ("we") | Only the five daily prayers are obligatory; witr and the Ṣubḥ sunnah are sunnah |
| Why they differ | Category, not proof-text: for the Ḥanafīs farḍ, wājib and sunnah are three separate categories; for the Shāfiʿīs the division does not run that way |
| The framing | "This is a disputable matter" — the Ḥanafīs justify their view at length in their own way |
Abandoning the prayer #
| The case | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Refuses — "I will not pray", while accepting it is obligatory | The case that leads to the apostasy ruling |
| Leaves it out of laziness | Never becomes a murtadd. He must repent and be brought back to the prayer |
| School | On abandoning out of laziness |
|---|---|
| Ḥanbalīs | You are not a Muslim |
| Shāfiʿīs + the jumhūr | It does not make him a murtadd |
The two conditions on the execution ruling — do not drop either:
- Only where there is an Islamic government. "None of this arises otherwise."
- He is first given time and called to repent — "if he repents and establishes the prayer, that is sufficient."
