A reading passage on three of the world's great cities — Tokyo, Cairo and New York — glossed word by word, with three uses of مِنْ and the comprehension and vocabulary drills. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

📚 Two sources: the class recording and the printed course material. This class was taught and recorded, and Al-ʿArabiyyah Bayna Yadayk Book 2 Part 1, Unit 4 (الحَيَاةُ فِي المَدِينَة), lesson 49, pp. 85–86 supplied part of what the recording did not carry. Anything carrying a citation — an ḥadīth number, a page, a printed exercise — comes from the printed source; anything in an In the class block comes from the recording. Where neither source has it, the notes say so rather than filling the gap.
What this lesson covers
Unit 4 continued with the reading passage مِنْ مُدُنِ العَالَمِ الكُبْرَى (lesson 49, p. 85). The title: مُدُن / قُرًى, أُمُّ القُرَى, and كُبْرَى as the feminine of أَكْبَر. Three uses of مِنْ: some of (مِنْ تِلْكَ المَسَاجِدِ), explaining a vague word (كَثِيرٌ مِنَ الآثَارِ), and from (مِنْ كُلِّ دُوَلِ العَالَمِ). The four warm-up questions. Tokyo: عَاصِمَة · عُمْلَة · يَبْلُغُ (not يَبْلَعُ) · نَحْوَ · مَبْلَغ · مَقَرّ · إِمْبِرَاطُور · مَصَارِف · تَكْثُرُ · أُنْشِئَتْ / نَشْأَة · تُوَاجِهُ · مُشْكِلَات. Cairo: مِصْر as feminine, تَقَعُ / مَوْقِع, الآثَار, مِئْذَنَة / مَآذِن against مَنَارَة, the five mosques and al-Azhar. New York: الوِلَايَاتُ المُتَّحِدَة · الأُمَمُ المُتَّحِدَة · يُوجَدُ · هَاجَرَ · طَلَبُ العِلْمِ, and مَبْنًى · عِمَارَة · نَاطِحَاتُ السَّحَاب. Then the which-city drill, the main-idea drill and four model sentences (p. 86).
Book 2 Part 1 · Unit 4 — الحَيَاةُ فِي المَدِينَة. A reading passage, مِنْ مُدُنِ العَالَمِ الكُبْرَى, "some of the world's great cities". Three short paragraphs — Tokyo, Cairo, New York — each built from the same few sentence patterns. Learn the patterns and you can describe any city.

1 · The title #

مِنْ مُدُنِ العَالَمِ الكُبْرَى — some of the biggest cities of the world.

WordMeaning
مُدُنcities — plural of مَدِينَة
قُرًىvillages — plural of قَرْيَة. Makkah is called أُمُّ القُرَى, the mother of the villages
العَالَمthe world
الكُبْرَىthe biggest

كُبْرَى is the feminine of أَكْبَر. From كَبِير (big) comes the comparative and superlative أَكْبَر (bigger, biggest) — the اِسْمُ التَّفْضِيل. Its feminine is كُبْرَى:

كَبِير ← أَكْبَر ← كُبْرَى

In the same way أَحْسَن (better, best) has the feminine حُسْنَى. So مُدُنُ العَالَمِ الكُبْرَى is the world's biggest cities.

2 · Before reading — four questions #

فَكِّرْ فِي الإِجَابَةِ عَنِ الأَسْئِلَةِ التَّالِيَةِ — think about the answers to these questions.

The answer to the first is القَاهِرَة — Cairo is called مَدِينَةُ الأَلْفِ مِئْذَنَة, the city of a thousand minarets. New York's problems include الجَرِيمَة, crime. The passage gives the rest.

Countries name their rulers by their systems: an emperor (إِمْبِرَاطُور) in Japan; a king (مَلِك) in a kingdom, المَمْلَكَةُ العَرَبِيَّةُ السُّعُودِيَّة; a sultan (سُلْطَان) in a sultanate, سَلْطَنَةُ عُمَان.

4 · The key verbs of paragraph 1 #

These four verbs carry the whole passage. Each is used again for Cairo and New York.

يَبْلُغُ — reaches. يَبْلُغُ عَدَدُ سُكَّانِهَا نَحْوَ عَشَرَةِ مَلَايِينَ — the number of its inhabitants reaches about ten million.

The five mosques. The mosque of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu) was the first mosque built in Egypt; ʿAmr led its conquest. His name is spelled عَمْرو, with a final و — that و is what tells it apart from عُمَر in writing. مُحَمَّد عَلِيّ is Muḥammad ʿAlī Pasha. The mosque of al-Azhar has become جَامِعَةُ الأَزْهَرِ, the university of al-Azhar.

6 · Paragraph 3 — New York #

7 · Three words for a building #

WordWhat it names
مَبْنًىany building — a house, a mosque
عِمَارَةa large, many-storeyed building, like a city hotel
نَاطِحَةُ سَحَاب · plural نَاطِحَاتُ السَّحَابa skyscraper — a very, very tall building

نَاطِحَاتُ السَّحَاب means, word for word, the cloud-butters: نَطَحَ is what a cow does with its horns, and سَحَاب is cloud. A building so tall it butts the clouds.

مَبْنًى ends in alif maqṣūrah: م ب ن ى.

8 · Three uses of مِنْ #

The passage uses مِنْ in three different ways. Ask which one each time.

UseExampleMeaning
Some of — a part of a wholeمِنْ مُدُنِ العَالَمِ الكُبْرَى · وَمِنْ تِلْكَ المَسَاجِدِ · أَكَلْتُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِsome of the great cities · among those mosques · I ate some of the food
Explaining a vague wordكَثِيرٌ مِنَ الآثَارِmany — many what? مِنْ says: ancient remains
From — origin, or what a thing is made ofطُلَّابٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دُوَلِ العَالَمِ · أَنَا مِنْ سِرِيلَانْكَا · سَرِيرٌ مِنَ الخَشَبِstudents from every country · I am from Sri Lanka · a bed of wood

So the title does not mean from the great cities. It means some of the world's great cities — three of them, out of many.
