Arabic 16 — Al-Ḥayāh bayna l-qaryah wa-l-madīnah — Unit 4 opens: the village-or-capital ḥiwār, its vocabulary, and four drills الحَيَاةُ بَيْنَ القَرْيَةِ وَالمَدِينَةِ

Unit 4 opens with a husband-and-wife ḥiwār about leaving the village for the capital — its full text, its vocabulary, the grammar it teaches, and the unit's four drills with every item. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

📚 Two sources: the class recording and the printed course material. This class was taught and recorded, and Al-ʿArabiyyah Bayna Yadayk Book 2 Part 1, Unit 4 (الحَيَاةُ فِي المَدِينَة), lesson 40, pp. 72–73 supplied part of what the recording did not carry. Anything carrying a citation — an ḥadīth number, a page, a printed exercise — comes from the printed source; anything in an In the class block comes from the recording. Where neither source has it, the notes say so rather than filling the gap.
What this lesson covers
الوَحْدَةُ الرَّابِعَة، الحَيَاةُ فِي المَدِينَة opens after a one-line recap of Units 1–3, with the textbook's first lesson of the unit (Book 2 Part 1, lesson 40, pp. 72–73). The ḥiwār: أَبُو عَمْرٍو and أُمُّ عَمْرٍو argue about selling the house and farm to join حُسَيْن (university), مُحْسِنَة (teachers' college) and حَسَّان (a company) in the capital. Vocabulary: رَحَلَ · مَزْرَعَة · زَرْع · شَجَر · حَصَاد · حَادِث/حَوَادِث · تَلَوُّث · ضَوْضَاء · ازْدِحَام · زَحْمَة · مُزْدَحِمَة · أَهْل · جِيرَان. Grammar: خَائِفَةٌ عَلَى (fearing for) against خَائِفٌ مِنْ (fearing of) · أَحْتَاجُ إِلَى · أَطْلُبُ مِنْ · أَنْ يَشْتَرُوا with the nūn dropped · the nominal sentence أَوْلَادُنَا يَعِيشُونَ and its agreement · and the wāw of عَمْرو that is written but never pronounced. Then the unit's four drills complete: صَحِيح/خَطَأ on five statements, ordering four sentences as they fall in the ḥiwār, the مُشْتَقَّات of د ر س, and إِلَى against فِي.
Book 2 Part 1 · Unit 4 — الحَيَاةُ فِي الْمَدِينَة, "city life". Unit 4 opens here with its first lesson: a ḥiwār between a husband and wife about leaving the village for the capital, then four drills on it.

1 · Where this sits: Unit 4 begins #

The course so far, and the new unit:

UnitTitleWhat it covered
1الْعِنَايَةُ بِالصِّحَّةlooking after your health
2التَّرْوِيحُ عَنِ النَّفْسrest and recreation
3الْحَيَاةُ الاِجْتِمَاعِيَّةsocial life
4الْحَيَاةُ فِي الْمَدِينَةcity life — this unit

The title needs no unpacking — "living in a city, what it is to live in one city." The unit's lessons take up the matters that belong to a city, and the first of them is this dialogue: الْحَيَاةُ بَيْنَ الْقَرْيَةِ وَالْمَدِينَة, "life between the village and the city." Two pictures are printed with it — a city skyline and a green village — and the argument runs between exactly those two.

2 · The ḥiwār in full #

The speakers are أَبُو عَمْرٍو (the father) and أُمُّ عَمْرٍو (the mother). Their three children are حُسَيْن at the university, مُحْسِنَة at the teachers' college, and حَسَّان working at a company — all three in the capital. There are no place names in the dialogue, only الْقَرْيَة (the village), الْمَدِينَة (the city) and الْعَاصِمَة (the capital).

Who says what. It is the father who says "أَنَا لَا أُحِبُّ الْعَاصِمَةَ. أَنَا أُحِبُّ بَيْتِي وَمَزْرَعَتِي" (the farm is his throughout), the mother who answers "I do not like the capital either, for there is pollution…" — the أَيْضًا is the giveaway — and the father who closes with the relatives and neighbours.

How the argument actually turns. The mother opens wanting to move and the father resists — and then they swap sides on the reason: both of them dislike the capital, and the thing that carries the decision is not preference but need. They are ill; the children are there; the children need them too. The last two lines are the father giving way.

3 · Vocabulary, line by line #

WordMeaning
رَحَلَto depart, to move away — it goes to a destination (رَحَلَ إِلَى)
مَزْرَعَةfarm · زَرْع crop, what is sown · شَجَر trees · حَصَاد harvest
حَادِث · حَوَادِثaccident · accidents
تَلَوُّثpollution
ضَوْضَاءnoise, din
اِزْدِحَام · زَحْمَةcrowding, congestion · the everyday word for it
مُزْدَحِمَةcrowded — الْحَافِلَةُ مُزْدَحِمَة, "the bus is crowded"
الأَهْلone's own people, relatives
الْجِيرَان (sing. جَار)the neighbours
شَرِكَةcompany · كُلِّيَّةُ الْمُعَلِّمَات teachers' training college

أَهْل has three uses: one's family, the people of a place, and the deserving sense of ahl.

4 · The grammar in the ḥiwār #

خَائِفَةٌ عَلَى versus خَائِفٌ مِنْ — the preposition carries the meaning.

ConstructionSense
خَائِفٌ عَلَىafraid for someone — fearing harm will come to them. "أَنَا خَائِفَةٌ عَلَى أَوْلَادِي" — she fears for her children
خَائِفٌ مِنْafraid of something — the thing itself is the threat

Verbs and their prepositions:

أَنْ يَشْتَرُوا — the nūn drops. After أَنْ the imperfect goes into the subjunctive, and in the plural that shows as the نُون of يَشْتَرُونَ falling away: أَنْ يَشْتَرُوا.

The nominal sentence and its agreement. أَوْلَادُنَا يَعِيشُونَ فِي الْعَاصِمَة — subject first, then a verbal predicate agreeing with it in number: awlādunā plural, so yaʿīshūna plural.

The spelling of عَمْرو. The wāw is written and never pronounced. It is there only to keep عَمْرو apart from عُمَر on the page.

5 · Drill 1 — صَحِيح or خَطَأ, then correct the wrong one #

Five statements about the ḥiwār. Mark each ✓ or ✗ and put the wrong ones right — the book prints a الصَّوَاب ("the correction") column beside them.

#StatementVerdictThe correction

6 · Drill 2 — put the four sentences in the ḥiwār's order #

The book prints them scrambled; the task is the order in which they occur in the dialogue. The ḥiwār puts the children in the capital before everything else.

OrderSentence

7 · Drill 3 — the مُشْتَقَّات of د ر س #

الْكَلِمَاتُ الْمُشْتَقَّة — the derived words, the family that branches off دَرَسَ. The book prints six in a box and six sentences to place them in.

WordMeaning
مَدْرَسَةschool — the place of studying
دِرَاسَةstudy (the noun)
يَدْرُسُhe studies
يُدَرِّسُhe teaches

6… أَيْنَ تُسَافِرُ؟إِلَىtravelling has an end-point

The rule: إِلَى carries a limit, an end-point, a target — you are going as far as something. فِي is time or place — you are in something.
