Arabic 15 — Aḍ-ḍamāʾir al-munfaṣilah wa ʿalāmāt at-tarqīm — the separate pronouns in full, the three drills, and the punctuation marks الضَّمَائِرُ المُنْفَصِلَةُ وَعَلَامَاتُ التَّرْقِيمِ

A grammar (qawāʿid) lesson, not a passage: material you have already met unsystematically, now taken in order. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
A grammar (qawāʿid) lesson, not a passage: material you have already met unsystematically, now taken in order. First الضَّمِير defined as an اسْم standing in for a name (and not only for people — شَجَرَة is feminine, so هِيَ), then its three kinds: مُنْفَصِل standing alone · مُتَّصِل joined, as the ـي of قَلَمِي and the هُ of قَلَمُهُ · مُسْتَتِر concealed, the هُوَ inside ذَهَبَ and the أَنْتَ inside اِذْهَبْ that are nowhere written. Cross-cut by the three persons — مُتَكَلِّم · مُخَاطَب · غَائِب — and the full munfaṣil paradigm laid out person by person: أَنَا، نَحْنُ for the speaker, with no dual and no gender distinction at all; أَنْتَ، أَنْتِ، أَنْتُمَا، أَنْتُمْ، أَنْتُنَّ for the addressee; هُوَ، هِيَ، هُمَا، هُمْ، هُنَّ for the absent — five each, because the dual is gender-shared in both (أَنْتُمَا and هُمَا serve masculine and feminine alike). Then the paradigm is put to work in three drill sets — fill the blank, choose one of three offered, supply any pronoun that fits — where the deciding evidence is repeatedly the rest of the sentence: أَعْرِفُهُمَا forces هُمَا (with أَنْتُمَا it would be أَعْرِفُكُمَا), تَذْهَبُونَ forces أَنْتُمْ, تَدْرُسْنَ forces أَنْتُنَّ (with هُنَّ it would be يَدْرُسْنَ), and أَنْتِ مَسْؤُولَةٌ عَنْ بَيْتِكِ is settled by sense, not grammar. Two practice exercises follow: supply the مُتَكَلِّم pronoun, and rewrite the مُخَاطَب in the غَائِب. The second half turns to عَلَامَات التَّرْقِيم: the Arabic comma written the other way about (،) and the trap that ٢،٥ is a decimal, not a list; then الفَاصِلَة · النُّقْطَة · النُّقْطَتَانِ after قَالَ · الفَاصِلَة المَنْقُوطَة where a clause explains what went before · عَلَامَة الاسْتِفْهَام · عَلَامَة التَّعَجُّب for يَا لَهَا مِنْ نَصِيحَةٍ! and مَا أَحْسَنَ كَلَامَكَ! · عَلَامَة التَّنْصِيص, from نَصّ = the wording itself, inside which the full stop is not placed. Closing on الجُمْلَة الاعْتِرَاضِيَّة, the parenthetical clause the two dashes mark: the marks themselves are not in the Qurʾān, but the construction is — illustrated from Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah, where وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ stands between the oath and its answer; and az-Zalzalah 4–5, where بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَى لَهَا gives the reason the earth speaks.

A grammar (qawāʿid) lesson, not a reading passage: material you have already met unsystematically, now taken in order. It has two unrelated halves — الضَّمَائِر المُنْفَصِلَة, the separate pronouns (the definition, the three kinds, the three persons, the full paradigm and three drill sets), and عَلَامَات التَّرْقِيم, the punctuation marks, closing on the parenthetical clause illustrated from Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah.

1 · الضَّمِير — what a pronoun is #

الضَّمِير (aḍ-ḍamīr), plural الضَّمَائِر — the pronoun; Tamil பிரதிப்பெயர்.

Every one of these is an اسْم — a noun, a name-word.

Take a man whose name is Zayd. Instead of using the name, we put something in its place: هُوَ. That is all a ḍamīr is — a word standing where a name would stand.

And it is not restricted to human beings. Take شَجَرَة (shajarah), a tree: since shajarah is feminine, its pronoun is هِيَ.

You met ضَمِير in Lesson 13 as one of the four routes to مَعْرِفة; here the pronoun system itself is taught.

2 · The three kinds of ḍamīr #

Kind
ضَمِير مُنْفَصِلmunfaṣilcomes separately — standing on its own
ضَمِير مُتَّصِلmuttaṣilcomes joined to a word
ضَمِير مُسْتَتِرmustatircomes hidden — not visible at all

Only the first is this lesson's subject. The other two are named so that the map is complete.

مُنْفَصِل — standing alone #

Munfaṣil = one that does not come joined to a noun, a verb or a particle.

أَنَا طَالِبٌ · أَنَا طَالِبَةٌ · نَحْنُ طَالِبَانِ · نَحْنُ · أَنْتَ · أَنْتُمَا · أَنْتُمْ · أَنْتُنَّ · هُوَ · هِيَ · هُمْ

Look at how each of them comes: attached to nothing.

مُتَّصِل — joined #

Muttaṣil = joined. Take قَلَم and the pronoun ـي:

قَلَمِي — "my pen"; the يَاء has attached itself. قَلَمُهُ — "his pen"; the هُ has attached itself.

The ـي, the ـكَ, the ـهُ — all ḍamīr muttaṣil, coming joined to a noun, a verb or a particle. It comes in the lessons ahead, not this one.

مُسْتَتِر — concealed #

مُسْتَتِر means concealed, hidden — it has hidden itself. This one we cannot see with the eye: we cannot tell whether it came joined or standing alone, because it is not written at all.

ذَهَبَ — "he went." Ask what its pronoun is and the answer is هُوَ — yet nowhere in ذَهَبَ is a هُوَ written. It is there all the same. اِذْهَبْ — "go." There is a pronoun inside this too: أَنْتَ.

3 · The three persons #

Whichever of the three kinds a pronoun is, it also sorts into three persons:

مُتَكَلِّمmutakallimthe one speaking — first person; Tamil தன்மை
مُخَاطَبmukhāṭabthe one spoken to — second person; Tamil முன்னிலை
غَائِبghāʾibthe one absent — third person

Better to hold the term الضَّمَائِر المُنْفَصِلَة in Arabic than to translate it.

4 · المُتَكَلِّم — two forms, and that is all #

أَنَا ("I") · نَحْنُ ("we").
[!note] The first person has no dual, and no gender distinction. Masculine and feminine alike take the same form; two people and many people alike take نَحْنُ. Two pronouns are the whole of the mutakallim.
أَنَا طَالِبٌ — "I am a student (m.)" · أَنَا طَالِبَةٌ — "I am a student (f.)" نَحْنُ طَالِبَانِ / نَحْنُ طَالِبَتَانِ — "we two are students" (m. / f.) نَحْنُ طُلَّابٌ / نَحْنُ طَالِبَاتٌ — "we are students" (m. / f.)

The noun after it changes for dual and plural; the pronoun does not.

5 · المُخَاطَب — five #

Here masculine and feminine do differ in the singular and in the plural:

singularأَنْتَ (m.) · أَنْتِ (f.)أَنْتَ طَالِبٌ · أَنْتِ طَالِبَةٌ
dualأَنْتُمَا — both gendersأَنْتُمَا طَالِبَانِ / أَنْتُمَا طَالِبَتَانِ
pluralأَنْتُمْ (m.) · أَنْتُنَّ (f.)أَنْتُمْ طُلَّابٌ · أَنْتُنَّ طَالِبَاتٌ

Count them: five. The two duals being one and the same form, the dual counts once.

6 · الغَائِب — five, the same way #

singularهُوَ (m.) · هِيَ (f.)هُوَ طَالِبٌ · هِيَ طَالِبَةٌ
dualهُمَا — both gendersهُمَا طَالِبَانِ / هُمَا طَالِبَتَانِ
pluralهُمْ (m.) · هُنَّ (f.)هُمْ طُلَّابٌ · هُنَّ طَالِبَاتٌ
The dual behaves identically in both persons. Just as أَنْتُمَا covers masculine and feminine together, so does هُمَا. That is why each of these two persons has five and not six.

That is the ضَمِير مُنْفَصِل, whole.

7 · From paradigm to sentence #

It is not enough to learn this as a table. The point is to use it in a sentence — so the exercises follow, and they are about application.

8 · Drill 1 — fill the blank with the fitting pronoun #

The drill sentences below follow the class's reading; read the exact wording from the textbook.

The first three sentences, with their blanks:

…… مُسَافِرٌ إِلَى بَلَدِهِ. …… مَرِيضَةٌ، فَاذْهَبِي إِلَى المُسْتَشْفَى. …… مُهَنْدِسَانِ فِي شَرِكَتِهِمَا.

(The possessive suffix on بَلَد and شَرِكَة shifts with whichever pronoun is chosen.)

المُسْتَشْفَىal-mustashfāthe hospital
شَرِكَةsharikaha company

And note شَرِكَتِهِمَا: the ـهِمَا on the end is a ضَمِير مُتَّصِل — joined, and not the business of this lesson.

Sentence 1 — more than one answer fits #

هُوَ مُسَافِرٌ إِلَى بَلَدِهِ. — "He is travelling to his country." أَنَا مُسَافِرٌ إِلَى بَلَدِي. — "I am travelling to my country."

أَنْتَ fits too. But أَنْتِ cannot, and هِيَ cannot — because مُسَافِرٌ is masculine.

Sentence 2 — أَنْتِ, and the force of the فَ #

أَنْتِ مَرِيضَةٌ، فَاذْهَبِي إِلَى المُسْتَشْفَى. anti marīḍatun, fa-dhhabī ilā-l-mustashfā. "You are ill — so go to the hospital."

The فَ is more than Tamil's "so, therefore": it carries at once, immediately — go, and go now. The urgency sits in the particle.

هِيَ would also stand — هِيَ مَرِيضَةٌ — with no grammatical error. Those two, and nothing else.

Sentence 3 — هُمَا, or نَحْنُ #

هُمَا مُهَنْدِسَانِ فِي شَرِكَتِهِمَا. — "Those two are engineers in their company." نَحْنُ مُهَنْدِسَانِ فِي شَرِكَتِنَا. — "We two are engineers in our company."

Both are sound; the suffix changes to match.

9 · Items 4 to 10 — where the rest of the sentence decides #

From here the drill stops having several answers: something else in the sentence settles it. This is the pattern to carry into the exam.

4 · أَنْتُمْ مُدَرِّسُونَ، تَذْهَبُونَ إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ #

"You are teachers; you go to the school." هُمْ مُدَرِّسُونَ and نَحْنُ مُدَرِّسُونَ each fit on their own — but تَذْهَبُونَ is second person, and that settles it: أَنْتُمْ.

5 · هُمَا مُعَلِّمَتَانِ، أَعْرِفُهُمَا #

"Those two are teachers (f.); I know them both." أَعْرِفُ = "I know"; أَعْرِفُهُمَا = "I know the two of them."

Why not أَنْتُمَا? Because then the verb would have to be أَعْرِفُكُمَا. The sentence already says أَعْرِفُهُمَا, so the pronoun must be هُمَا.

6 · أَنْتُمَا تُسَاعِدَانِ زَوْجَيْكُمَا #

"You two help your two wives." The same reasoning in reverse: ـكُمَا is second-person dual, so أَنْتُمَا is what fits.

7 · أَنْتُنَّ تَدْرُسْنَ فِي هٰذِهِ المَدْرَسَةِ #

"You (f. pl.) study in this school." تَدْرُسْنَ addresses the mukhāṭab, so أَنْتُنَّ. Would هُنَّ do? No — with هُنَّ the verb would be يَدْرُسْنَ.

8 · أَنَا نَائِمٌ فِي غُرْفَتِي #

"I am asleep in my room." نَامَ = to sleep; نَائِم = one who is sleeping.

9 · نَحْنُ …، نَفْحَصُ المَرْضَى #

"We are doctors; we examine the patients." فَحَصَ = to examine, to check over; مَرِيض = a patient, plural here مَرْضَى. The verb نَفْحَصُ is first-person plural, so نَحْنُ must come.

10 · أَنْتِ مَسْؤُولَةٌ عَنْ بَيْتِكِ #

"You are responsible for your house." مَسْؤُولَة = responsible, answerable for something.

[!note] This one is settled by sense, not by grammar. هِيَ مَسْؤُولَةٌ عَنْ بَيْتِكِ is grammatically sound — but the meaning fails: "she is responsible for your house". So the answer is أَنْتِ.

10 · Drill 2 — choose one of three offered #

A different shape: three pronouns are offered for each sentence and you pick the one that fits.

أَنَا أَسْهَرُ خَارِجَ البَيْتِ. — "I stay up outside the house."

سَهِرَ = to stay awake at night — the word from the line already met in this course:

مَنْ طَلَبَ العُلَا سَهِرَ اللَّيَالِيَ. "Whoever seeks the heights stays awake through the nights."
أَنَا أُحِبُّهَا كَثِيرًا. — "I love her very much."

Offered: أَنَا · أَنْتَ · أَنْتُمْ. Only أَنَا fits the verb أُحِبُّ.

أَنْتِ تَكَلَّمْتِ مَعَهُ. — "You (f.) spoke with him."

تَكَلَّمَ = he spoke; the ـتِ ending gives the feminine addressee.

هُمْ فَكَّرُوا بِالسَّفَرِ. — "They thought about the journey."

فَكَّرَ needs a particle before what is thought about — بِـ, as here, or فِي (the classical form, as in يَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ). And فَكَّرُوا is masculine plural, so the pronoun is هُمْ.

أَنْتُنَّ طَالِبَاتٌ نَشِيطَاتٌ. — "You (f. pl.) are energetic students."

Feminine plural, so أَنْتُنَّ.

Go over all of these exercises again and again — then the way the pronouns are used stays in the mind properly.

11 · Drill 3 — supply any pronoun that fits #

Same shape again, but now count how many are possible:

SentenceFits
…… طُلَّابٌ مِنَ السُّودَانِ"students from Sudan"أَنْتُمْ · هُمْ · نَحْنُ — all three
…… مُوَظَّفَانِ نَشِيطَانِ"energetic employees (m. du.)"أَنْتُمَا · هُمَا — two
…… عُمَّالٌ فِي الشَّرِكَةِ"workers in the company"نَحْنُ · أَنْتُمْ · هُمْ — three
…… طَبِيبَاتٌ نَشِيطَاتٌ"energetic doctors (f. pl.)"هُنَّ · أَنْتُنَّ · نَحْنُ — three
…… مُهَنْدِسَتَانِ مِصْرِيَّتَانِ"Egyptian engineers (f. du.)"أَنْتُمَا · هُمَا — two
…… بِنْتٌ طَيِّبَةٌ"a good girl"أَنَا
…… طَالِبَتَانِ مُجْتَهِدَتَانِ"diligent students (f. du.)"أَنْتُمَا · هُمَا

عُمَّال is the plural of عَامِل — labourers, workers.

Note the pairing. عُمَّال is masculine plural, so it takes the masculine set; طَبِيبَات is feminine plural, so it takes the feminine set. And the dual rows only ever take two, because the dual is gender-shared — there is no third form to offer.

12 · Practice #

Then repeat the drills above.

---

13 · A second, separate topic: the Arabic comma #

The second half of the lesson is unrelated to the pronouns.

When we write we use marks — the same ones, used the same way, in Tamil. But look at the comma: in Tamil and English it is written one way; in Arabic it is turned the other way about — ،.

[!note] The trap. Where you would write 2.5 with a point, Arabic writing puts a comma in that position. So ٢،٥ is not "two, then five" — the mark there is doing the work of the decimal point.

Lesson 1 listed punctuation among the unit's material still to come; it is taught here.

14 · عَلَامَاتُ التَّرْقِيم — the marks, named #

The dots and signs are called عَلَامَاتُ التَّرْقِيم (ʿalāmāt at-tarqīm). Everyone already uses them; the work here is knowing their names and applying them.

MarkArabic
comma ،الفَاصِلَةal-fāṣilah
full stop .النُّقْطَةan-nuqṭah
colon :النُّقْطَتَانِan-nuqṭatān — literally "the two dots"
semicolon ؛الفَاصِلَة المَنْقُوطَةal-fāṣilah al-manqūṭah — the "dotted comma"
question mark ؟عَلَامَةُ الاسْتِفْهَامʿalāmat al-istifhām
exclamation mark !عَلَامَةُ التَّعَجُّبʿalāmat at-taʿajjub — عَجِيب = wonderful
quotation marks «»عَلَامَةُ التَّنْصِيصʿalāmat at-tanṣīṣ

15 · The marks applied, sentence by sentence #

شَرِبَ الرَّجُلُ وَحَمِدَ رَبَّهُ. "The man drank, and praised his Lord."

Two marks are needed here: the فَاصِلَة inside, and the نُقْطَة to close.

المُسْلِمُ أَخُو المُسْلِمِ. — "The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim."

Complete in itself, so it closes with a نُقْطَة.

يَا لَهَا مِنْ نَصِيحَةٍ! — "What a piece of advice!"

One of the wonder-constructions already studied — so عَلَامَةُ التَّعَجُّب.

مَاذَا تُرِيدُ؟ — "What do you want?" → عَلَامَةُ الاسْتِفْهَام. مَا أَحْسَنَ كَلَامَكَ! — "How excellent your speech is!" → عَلَامَةُ التَّعَجُّب, like يَا لَهَا مِنْ نَصِيحَةٍ!

الفَاصِلَة المَنْقُوطَة — the clause that explains #

سَافَرَ إِلَى المَدِينَةِ لِيَدْرُسَ فِي الجَامِعَةِ. "He travelled to Madinah in order to study at the university."

Where a later clause explains or clarifies what went before it — why did he travel? — the mark is the فَاصِلَة مَنْقُوطَة. The sentence still ends in a نُقْطَة.

النُّقْطَتَانِ, and عَلَامَةُ التَّنْصِيص #

After قَالَ تَعَالَى come two dots — النُّقْطَتَانِ.

نَصّ (naṣṣ) means a text, the wording itself — the same word used of a ḥadīth's naṣṣ. So when we reproduce someone's own words exactly, we put them inside عَلَامَةُ التَّنْصِيص.

[!note] Inside the quotation marks the full stop is not placed.
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: «أَفْضَلُ الجِهَادِ حَجٌّ مَبْرُورٌ». "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The best jihād is an accepted ḥajj.'"

Because قَالَ comes, the نُقْطَتَانِ follow it; and the quoted words take عَلَامَةُ التَّنْصِيص.

16 · الجُمْلَة الاعْتِرَاضِيَّة — the parenthetical clause #

Rather than memorising the names, remember that every one of these marks is used in Tamil too.

Now the two dashes — what goes between them is a جُمْلَة اعْتِرَاضِيَّة (jumlah iʿtirāḍiyyah), a parenthetical clause. Say we are speaking about Muhammad; between the dashes we drop in a clause saying who he is — something the listener needs in order to follow, but which is not part of the main sentence.

Are the two dashes in the Qurʾān? No — these punctuation marks are not in the Qurʾān. But the construction is, and in our own written sentences we mark it this way.

17 · The construction in the Qurʾān — Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah #

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ ۝ وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ ۝ إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ "I swear by the positions of the stars — and it is a mighty oath, if you only knew — it is a noble Qurʾān." (al-Wāqiʿah 56:75–77)

The oath is فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ; its answer is إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ. In between comes وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ — a clause that tells the listener how great the oath is, but is not part of the main sentence: take it out and the oath runs straight on to its answer. That is a جُمْلَة اعْتِرَاضِيَّة. Written in our own sentences, it would stand between two dashes.

18 · Sūrat az-Zalzalah — the scene of the Resurrection #

إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا ۝ وَأَخْرَجَتِ الأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا ۝ وَقَالَ الإِنْسَانُ مَا لَهَا "When the earth is shaken with its earthquake, and the earth throws out its burdens, and man says: what is wrong with it?"

What is being described? The scene of the hereafter — set out so that it comes before the eyes as a picture.

A digression: there is a whole book devoted to just this — مَشَاهِدُ القِيَامَة (Mashāhid al-Qiyāmah), on how the Qurʾān composes its scenes of the Resurrection.

The earth is shaken; وَأَخْرَجَتِ الأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا — it throws out all its burdens; and man says مَا لَهَا, "what is the matter with it?" Then:

يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا ۝ بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَى لَهَا "That Day it will tell its news, because your Lord has inspired it."

بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَى لَهَا is joined to تُحَدِّثُ — it gives the reason the earth speaks, and answers the question rising in the listener's mind: how can the earth speak?

[!note] The وَحْي meant here is not the revelation given to prophets. The sense is that the earth holds and preserves all those reports, and gives them out on that Day.

The scene then goes on:

يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِيُرَوْا أَعْمَالَهُمْ "That Day the people will emerge in scattered groups, to be shown their deeds."

They come out in separate crowds; whoever did good sees it, and whoever did evil — that too will be made known.

19 · Summary #

Run back over the paradigm — how the مُتَكَلِّم comes, then the غَائِب; the mukhāṭab set of five, the mutakallim set of two. "If you have understood how to use them, that is enough."

Crib sheet. Cover the right-hand columns and recall. Two unrelated halves: الضَّمَائِر المُنْفَصِلَة (the paradigm and the drills) and عَلَامَات التَّرْقِيم (the punctuation marks).

الضَّمِير — the definition #
