Arabic 12 — Hal taḥduthu mushkilātun bayna z-zawjayn — the dual, and the unit on married life هَلْ تَحْدُثُ مُشْكِلاتٌ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ؟

The new unit of Book 2 Part 1, taken title-first — the dual (المُثَنَّى), its shift to yāʾ+nūn after a preposition or in naṣb, and why the title reads بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
The new unit of Book 2 Part 1, taken title-first. The dual (المُثَنَّى) — alif+nūn on the singular, and its shift to yāʾ+nūn after a preposition or in naṣb, which is why the title reads بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ · the title vocabulary: حادِثة (an occurrence, حادِثةُ سَيْرٍ a road accident) and مُشْكِلات — the plural of مُشْكِلة, and مَشاكِل is rejected outright · the pairs والِدانِ (the two parents, not 'two fathers') and زَوْجانِ · the unit's four discussion questions and a model answer (سوءُ الاتِّصالِ سَبَبٌ مِنْ أَسْبابِ المُشْكِلاتِ) · then the four-paragraph reading passage, worked sentence by sentence: خَيْرٌ كَثيرٌ لِلزَّوْجِ وَلِلزَّوْجَةِ وَلِلأَوْلادِ · وَمَعَ ذلِكَ · the frequency trio غالِباً · أَحْياناً · نادِراً · عَلَيْنا أَنْ نَعْرِفَ · قَدْ + māḍī = confirmation, قَدْ + muḍāriʿ = 'may / sometimes' · خِلاف / خِلافات / اِخْتِلاف · عَجَزَ / عاجِز / عَجوز and why inability-to-solve is the real problem · بِلا · إِذا takes the past tense but means the future · ثارَ / ثَوْرة · رِحْلة طَويلة and الحِوار as السَّبيل إِلَى النَّجاة · مِنْ وَقْتٍ لِآخَرَ · the literary frame يَعودُ السَّبَبُ إِلى… · مَرْحَلةُ الطُّفولةِ وَالشَّبابِ · and the closing list of what each spouse complains of.

This unit of Book 2 Part 1 is taken in the textbook's own order: the title and the words in it, the four discussion questions printed under it, and then the unit's four-paragraph reading passage, worked sentence by sentence.

1 · The title, and why it says الزَّوْجَيْنِ and not الزَّوْجانِ #

Start with the heading itself:

هَلْ تَحْدُثُ مُشْكِلاتٌ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ؟ hal taḥduthu mushkilātun bayna-z-zawjayni? "Do problems arise between husband and wife?"

Every hard word in the unit is already in that line. Take them one at a time.

2 · المُثَنَّى — the dual #

You know this one. To say two of something, Arabic does not use a separate word — it puts الأَلِف وَالنُّون (alif and nūn) onto the singular:

SingularDualMeaning
قَلَمٌ (qalamun)قَلَمانِ (qalamāni)a pen → two pens
زَوْجٌ (zawjun)زَوْجانِ (zawjāni)a spouse → the two spouses
والِدٌ (wālidun)والِدانِ (wālidāni)a parent → the two parents
[!note] والِدانِ does not mean "two fathers." It means father and mother together — the two parents. The dual of a paired word takes in both members of the pair, which is exactly why زَوْجانِ means husband and wife, not "two husbands."

3 · And then alif+nūn becomes yāʾ+nūn #

Recall the singular first. A plain noun in رَفْع (rafʿ, nominative) carries a ضَمّة; the sign of نَصْب (naṣb, accusative) is a فَتْحة; and after a حَرْف جَرّ (a preposition) it carries a كَسْرة.

The dual does something different. In those same two positions — after a preposition, or in naṣb — its أَلِف + نُون turns into ياء + نُون:

زَوْجانِ (zawjāni) → زَوْجَيْنِ (zawjayni)

The title has the preposition بَيْنَ (bayna, "between") standing in front of it, so the dual must shift:

بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ — bayna-z-zawjayni — "between the two spouses."

That single shift is the grammar point of the whole unit. Wherever the passage below puts a preposition before a dual, you will see it again.

4 · حادِثة — an occurrence, an accident #

From حَدَثَ (ḥadatha), "something happened / occurred":

The unit's own verb تَحْدُثُ (taḥduthu, "arise / occur") is from this same root.

5 · مُشْكِلات — and the plural that is wrong #

مُشْكِلة (mushkilatun) is "a problem." Its plural is مُشْكِلات (mushkilāt).

[!note] مَشاكِل is rejected. Some people form the plural of مُشْكِلة as مَشاكِل (mashākil). This is wrong: from مُشْكِلة the plural comes as مُشْكِلات, and you must not say مَشاكِل.

6 · The four discussion questions #

Printed under the title, to be thought about before the passage is read.

#QuestionMeaning
1هَلْ تَحْدُثُ مُشْكِلاتٌ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ؟Do problems arise between spouses?
2لِماذا تَحْدُثُ المُشْكِلاتُ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ؟Why do problems arise between them?
3عَلى مَنْ يَجِبُ حَلُّ المُشْكِلاتِ البَيْتِيَّةِ وَالأُسَرِيَّةِ؟On whom is it obligatory to solve household and family problems?
4مَتى يَقَعُ الطَّلاقُ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ؟When does divorce occur between them?

Words in these: لِماذا (limādhā) = "why" · حَلّ (ḥall) = "solving, a solution" · الطَّلاق (aṭ-ṭalāq) = divorce · يَقَعُ (yaqaʿu) = "falls, occurs, takes place."

A model answer to question 2:

سوءُ الاتِّصالِ سَبَبٌ مِنْ أَسْبابِ المُشْكِلاتِ. sūʾu-l-ittiṣāli sababun min asbābi-l-mushkilāt. "Poor communication is one of the causes of these problems."

اتِّصال (ittiṣāl) = communication, contact · سوء (sūʾ) = badness, poorness.

The answer to question 3 is short: الزَّوْجانِ — the two of them. Whoever the problem belongs to is who must solve it; a problem inside the household is solved by the couple, together, or it does not get solved.

7 · Passage, paragraph 1 — married life, and what the real problem is #

في الحَياةِ الزَّوْجِيَّةِ خَيْرٌ كَثيرٌ لِلزَّوْجِ وَلِلزَّوْجَةِ وَلِلأَوْلادِ. fī-l-ḥayāti-z-zawjiyyati khayrun kathīrun li-z-zawji wa-li-z-zawjati wa-li-l-awlād. "In married life there is much good — for the husband, for the wife, and for the children."

Three parties, each with its own لِـ: لِلزَّوْجِ · وَلِلزَّوْجَةِ · وَلِلأَوْلادِ.

وَمَعَ ذلِكَ تَحْدُثُ أَحْياناً بَعْضُ المُشْكِلاتِ في حَياةِ الزَّوْجَيْنِ. wa-maʿa dhālika taḥduthu aḥyānan baʿḍu-l-mushkilāti fī ḥayāti-z-zawjayn. "And even so, some problems sometimes arise in the life of the two spouses."

وَمَعَ ذلِكَ (wa-maʿa dhālika) = "and yet · even so · at the same time." Note حَياةِ الزَّوْجَيْنِ — the dual again, this time in iḍāfah, again as يْنِ.

The frequency trio #

WordMeaningStrength
غالِباً (ghāliban)mostly, usuallymore than aḥyānan
أَحْياناً (aḥyānan)sometimesthe middle
نادِراً (nādiran)rarelyless than aḥyānan

Learn them as a set of three, in that order.

وَعَلَيْنا أَنْ نَعْرِفَ هذِهِ الحَقيقَةَ قَبْلَ الزَّواجِ. wa-ʿalaynā an naʿrifa hādhihi-l-ḥaqīqata qabla-z-zawāj. "And we must know this truth before marriage."

عَلَيْنا (ʿalaynā) = "upon us [it is a duty]" — the fuller form is يَجِبُ عَلَيْنا (yajibu ʿalaynā), "it is obligatory upon us." حَقيقة (ḥaqīqah) = truth, reality.

قَدْ — two different jobs #

قَدْ تَحْدُثُ خِلافاتٌ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ. qad taḥduthu khilāfātun bayna-z-zawjayn. "Differences may arise between husband and wife."
قَدْ +SenseExamples
الماضي (past)confirmation / emphasis — "has indeed"قَدْ حَدَثَ it has happened · قَدْ ذَهَبَ he has gone · قَدْ أَكَلَ he has eaten
المُضارِع (present)"may / sometimes"قَدْ يَذْهَبُ he may go · قَدْ تَحْدُثُ they may arise

So قَدْ تَحْدُثُ here carries the same force as أَحْياناً.

خِلاف (khilāf), pl. خِلافات — differences, disagreements. اِخْتِلاف (ikhtilāf), pl. اِخْتِلافات — the same meaning; the two are interchangeable here.

وَلَيْسَتْ هذِهِ هِيَ المُشْكِلَةَ، إِنَّما المُشْكِلَةُ أَنْ نَعْجِزَ عَنْ حَلِّ تِلْكَ المُشْكِلاتِ. wa-laysat hādhihi hiya-l-mushkilata, innamā-l-mushkilatu an naʿjiza ʿan ḥalli tilka-l-mushkilāt. "But this is not the problem; the problem is rather that we are unable to solve those problems."

This is the paragraph's point. Two people holding different views is not the problem. لَيْسَتْ (laysat) = "is not." The problem is أَنْ نَعْجِزَ — our inability to solve them.

عَجَزَ and its family #

عَجَزَ / يَعْجِزُ / نَعْجِزُ (ʿajaza) = to be unable, to be incapable.

8 · Paragraph 2 — what young people assume, and what they should know #

يَعْتَقِدُ كَثيرٌ مِنَ الشَّبابِ أَنَّ الحَياةَ الزَّوْجِيَّةَ بِلا مُشْكِلاتٍ. yaʿtaqidu kathīrun mina-sh-shabābi anna-l-ḥayāta-z-zawjiyyata bilā mushkilāt. "Many young people believe that married life is without problems."

شَباب (shabāb) = young people, youth (a plural). Note the construction: كَثيرٌ مِنَ الشَّبابِ ("many of the youth") is not the same shape as الشَّبابُ الكَثيرُ. It belongs with قَليلٌ مِنَ الماءِ (a little water) and كَثيرٌ مِنَ الطَّعامِ (much food).

بِلا (bilā) is بِـ + لا = "without": بِلا خَوْفٍ (without fear) · ذَهَبْتُ إِلى كولومبو بِلا مالٍ ("I went to Colombo without money") · بِلا مُشْكِلاتٍ.

إِذا takes the past tense but means the future #

[!note] The two verbs after إِذا must come in the الماضي (past) — and the meaning you take is future. Tamil pushes you to use a future verb there. Do not.
إِذا ذَهَبْتُ إِلى كولومبو قابَلْتُكَ. idhā dhahabtu ilā Colombo qābaltuk. "If I go to Colombo, I will meet you."
إِذا أَكَلْتَ ضَرَبْتُكَ. idhā akalta ḍarabtuk. "If you eat, I will hit you."

Both verbs past in form; the sense is future. Now the passage's own sentence:

فَإِذا قابَلُوا مُشْكِلَةً ثارُوا وَفَكَّرُوا بِالطَّلاقِ. fa-idhā qābalū mushkilatan thārū wa-fakkarū bi-ṭ-ṭalāq. "So when they meet a problem they flare up and start thinking about divorce."

ثارَ (thāra) = to rise up, flare up, be stirred — ثارَ الغُبارُ (the dust rose up); ثَوْرة (thawrah) = an uprising, a revolution.

"The young must know that married life is a long journey, and that the way to safety is dialogue."

رِحْلة طَويلة — a long journey; it is not over in three or four years. السَّبيلُ إِلَى النَّجاةِ — the path to deliverance — هُوَ الحِوارُ: الحِوار (al-ḥiwār), discussion, talking it through. There is no other route.

9 · Paragraph 3 — why problems come from time to time #

لِماذا تَحْدُثُ المُشْكِلاتُ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ مِنْ وَقْتٍ لِآخَرَ؟ limādhā taḥduthu-l-mushkilātu bayna-z-zawjayni min waqtin li-ākhar? "Why do problems arise between spouses from time to time?"

مِنْ وَقْتٍ لِآخَرَ (min waqtin li-ākhar) = "from time to time," now and then.

يَعودُ السَّبَبُ إِلى وُجودِ خِلافاتٍ كَثيرَةٍ بَيْنَ شَخْصِيَّةِ الرَّجُلِ وَشَخْصِيَّةِ المَرْأَةِ. yaʿūdu-s-sababu ilā wujūdi khilāfātin kathīratin bayna shakhṣiyyati-r-rajuli wa-shakhṣiyyati-l-marʾah. "The cause goes back to the existence of many differences between the personality of the man and the personality of the woman."

يَعودُ السَّبَبُ إِلى… — a frame worth memorising #

عادَ / يَعودُ = "to return," so literally "the cause returns to…" — i.e. "the reason lies in…". A literary usage; keep it and reuse it:

وَتَظْهَرُ هذِهِ الخِلافاتُ بَعْدَ مَرْحَلَةِ الطُّفولَةِ، وَتَزيدُ في مَرْحَلَةِ الشَّبابِ. wa-taẓharu hādhihi-l-khilāfātu baʿda marḥalati-ṭ-ṭufūlah, wa-tazīdu fī marḥalati-sh-shabāb. "These differences appear after the stage of childhood, and increase in the stage of youth."

مَرْحَلة (marḥalah) = stage, phase — مَرْحَلَةُ الطُّفولَةِ the childhood stage, مَرْحَلَةُ الشَّبابِ the youth stage. تَزيدُ (tazīdu) = they increase.

The differences are visible from childhood: the clothes, the toys, the games, the way of speaking. And then after marriage people expect the two to think alike. The question is not how to remove the differences but how they are handled — and that handling is الحِوار.

10 · Paragraph 4 — what each side complains of #

وَعِنْدَما تَحْدُثُ المُشْكِلاتُ في الحَياةِ الزَّوْجِيَّةِ يَشْكو الزَّوْجانِ. wa-ʿindamā taḥduthu-l-mushkilātu fī-l-ḥayāti-z-zawjiyyati yashkū-z-zawjān. "And when problems arise in married life, both spouses complain."

شَكا / يَشْكو (shakā / yashkū) = to complain · الشَّكْوى (ash-shakwā) = the complaint · and the phrase يَقومُ الزَّوْجانِ بِالشَّكْوى — "the two of them make complaint."

يَشْكو الزَّوْجُ فَيَقولُ — the husband complains and says:

#ArabicMeaning
1زَوْجَتي لا تَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيَّ.My wife does not listen to me.
2وَتَتَحَدَّثُ مَعَ صَديقاتِها بِالهاتِفِ كَثيراً.And she talks a great deal on the phone with her friends.
3وَتَذْهَبُ إِلَى السّوقِ كَثيراً.And she goes to the market a great deal.
4وَتَشْتَري أَشْياءَ لا نَحْتاجُ إِلَيْها.And she buys things we do not need.

وَتَشْكو الزَّوْجَةُ فَتَقولُ — and the wife complains and says:

#ArabicMeaning
1زَوْجي يَتَكَلَّمُ طولَ الوَقْتِ في السِّياسَةِ وَالرِّياضَةِ.My husband talks all the time about politics and sport.
2وَيَقْضي وَقْتاً طَويلاً خارِجَ البَيْتِ.And he spends long hours outside the house.
3وَعِنْدَما يَكونُ في البَيْتِ يَقْضي الوَقْتَ في قِراءَةِ الصُّحُفِ وَالمَجَلّاتِ أَوِ الحاسوبِ.And when he is at home he spends his time reading newspapers and magazines, or on the computer.

طولَ الوَقْتِ (ṭūla-l-waqt) = the whole time, all the time · الصُّحُف (aṣ-ṣuḥuf) = newspapers · المَجَلّات (al-majallāt) = magazines · الحاسوب (al-ḥāsūb) = the computer.

Go by the lists above, not by a count of how many complaints each side has.

11 · A wisdom on the husband's complaint #

On the husband's complaint زَوْجَتي لا تَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيَّ, a wider lesson: Allah's creation — your family, your household, what is around you — follows a principle: if we do not listen to what Allah says, we should not expect Allah's creation to listen to us. The point is from Ibrāhīm ibn Adham raḥimahullāh, and it is a warning for everyone.

12 · Practice #

Read the passage through several times on your own: your own reading of it is what counts as study.

Crib sheet. Cover the right-hand columns and recall. The unit هَلْ تَحْدُثُ مُشْكِلاتٌ بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ؟. One grammar point (the dual), one rejected plural (مَشاكِل), two constructions that behave unexpectedly (قَدْ, إِذا), and one literary frame (يَعودُ السَّبَبُ إِلى).
