1 · أَقْسَامُ الكَلِمَةِ — what the phrase means
- قِسْم (qism), plural أَقْسَام (aqsām) = a division / section. In a university each faculty has its departments, and each of those is a qism — but here it does not mean "department": here aqsām means kinds / categories.
- كَلِمَة (kalimah) = a word.
- So أَقْسَامُ الكَلِمَةِ = "the kinds of the word" — how every Arabic word is classified.
This threefold split is the well-known division. Some scholars subdivide further, but the Sheikh's instruction is plain: take it as three. [unclear — the aside about the other views is garbled in the recording.]
2 · The three kinds and their tests
| Kind | Definition given | Covers | Quick test |
|---|---|---|---|
| اِسْم (ism) — noun | اِسْمٌ لِشَيْءٍ، لِمَكَانٍ، لِشَخْصٍ — a word for a thing, a place or a person | proper names + common nouns | it can carry the alif-lām (ال) |
| فِعْل (fiʿl) — verb | a word expressing an action | past, present and imperative alike | it says he did / he does / do! |
| حَرْف (ḥarf) — particle | has no independent meaning of its own | prepositions, conjunctions, naṣb/jazm particles | meaningless alone — it only works inside a sentence |
3 · اِسْم — proper nouns and common nouns
عَلَم (ʿalam) = a proper noun, the name given to one particular person, town or thing. Examples the Sheikh used: مُحَمَّد (Muḥammad), زَيْنَب (Zaynab). His modern analogy: "Samsung" is the name of one particular make of phone — that is a ʿalam.
Common nouns from the same drill:
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| النَّاسُ | an-nās | people |
| الوَقْتُ | al-waqt | time |
| المَاءُ | al-māʾ | water |
| الدَّجَاجُ | ad-dajāj | chicken |
| خِيَار | khiyār | cucumber — in modern Arabic also "option / choice", as in a phone or website menu (khiyārāt), where it plainly is not a cucumber |
| شَعِير | shaʿīr | barley |
- The alif-lām test: it is to nouns that ال attaches — though it can be absent. مُحَمَّد، زَيْنَب، خِيَار come without it; النَّاس، الوَقْت، المَاء، الدَّجَاج carry it.
4 · فِعْل — and the letter-count of past vs present
The second kind is the verb. The Sheikh ran through the examples counting letters in the māḍī against the muḍāriʿ:
| Verb | Reading | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| جَلَسَ | jalasa | he sat | three-letter past |
| مَارَسَ / يُمَارِسُ | mārasa / yumārisu | he practised / practises | four-letter past; يُمَارِسُ الرِّيَاضَةَ = does sport |
| جَاهَدَ | jāhada | he strove | four-letter past |
| حَمَلَ / يَحْمِلُ | ḥamala / yaḥmilu | he carried / carries | three-letter past, four-letter present |
| فَضَّلَ / يُفَضِّلُ | faḍḍala / yufaḍḍilu | he preferred / prefers | four-letter present |
| يَخْتَلِفُ | yakhtalifu | it differs | five-letter present |
[unclear — several verb citations in this run are garbled; the point being taught is the letter-count of the māḍī against the muḍāriʿ, not any one form.]
The imperative is a verb too. اِذْهَبْ (idhhab, "go!"), تَنَاوَلْ (tanāwal, "take! / eat!") and اِتَّبِعْ (ittabiʿ, "follow!") are أَمْر (imperatives) — so the fiʿl class covers past, present and imperative alike.
5 · حَرْف — the particle
A ḥarf carries no meaning standing alone. Take فِي (fī): by itself it means nothing; we use it for "in," which is its commonest sense, and the Sheikh counts roughly nine senses for it in all. The particle takes its meaning from the sentence it sits in. [unclear — the enumeration of the nine senses is garbled.]
Two things called "ḥarf" — do not confuse them
| Term | What it means | In this lesson? |
|---|---|---|
| حُرُوفُ المَبَانِي | the letters of the alphabet (alif, bāʾ …) — "letters of structure" | no |
| حُرُوفُ المَعَانِي | the particles that bring a meaning into the sentence | yes — this is the ḥarf of أَقْسَامُ الكَلِمَةِ |
Kinds of particle the Sheikh named
- حُرُوفُ الجَرِّ (ḥurūf al-jarr, the prepositions): مِنْ (min, most often "from"), عَلَى (ʿalā, "on / upon"), فِي (fī, "in"), and the لِ of لِلنَّاسِ. When they enter a sentence they change both the meaning and the vowel-endings (حَرَكَات) of what follows.
- وَ of the oath — a ḥarf that puts a kasrah on the word after it: وَاللهِ (wallāhi) = "by Allah," i.e. "this is the truth."
- حَرْف عَطْف (particle of conjunction): أَوْ (aw) = "or" — used to join words to one another. Note the trap the Sheikh flagged: أَوْ is NOT a ḥarf jarr, it is a ḥarf ʿaṭf.
- حَرْف نَصْب: أَنْ (an) comes before a present verb and puts it in naṣb — the sense becomes "to do": أَنْ يَذْهَبَ (an yadhhaba) = "to go," أَنْ يَتَنَاوَلَ = "to eat," أَنْ يَشْرَبَ = "to drink." (The details of naṣb come in later lessons.)
- لَمْ before a مُضَارِع puts a sukūn on it (that is jazm) — carried over from the previous class, and the Sheikh's words were "you must know this."
6 · The classification drill — اِسْماً، فِعْلاً، حَرْفاً
The words are set out and each student says of each: is it a noun, a verb or a particle?
| Word | Reading | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| قَرَأَ | qaraʾa | فِعْل | "he read" — a past-tense action |
| إِلَّا | illā | حَرْف | "except" — no meaning alone |
| لَمْ | lam | حَرْف | the jazm particle |
| يُصَلِّي | yuṣallī | فِعْل | "he prays" — present |
| عَمّ | ʿamm | اِسْم | the father's brother, paternal uncle |
| يَقُولُ / قَالَ | yaqūlu / qāla | فِعْل | present and past of "to say" |
| سَافَرَ | sāfara | فِعْل | "he travelled" |
| مِنْ | min | حَرْف | preposition |
| عَلَى | ʿalā | حَرْف | preposition |
| عَصْر | ʿaṣr | اِسْم | a time — a noun |
| صَلَاة | ṣalāh | اِسْم | prayer |
| ثُمَّ | thumma | حَرْف | "then" — a connector |
[unclear — one or two items in the first run of this drill are garbled in the recording.]
7 · The unit's sentences — parse the underlined word
The rubric is الكَلِمَةُ المُخَطَّطُ تَحْتَهَا — "the word underlined beneath": say what it is. Every sentence in the exercise belongs to this unit, العِنَايَةُ بِالصِّحَّةِ, so the Sheikh's order was: learn the grammar and read these sentences again and again until they are familiar. He set the tone with اِبْتَعِدْ عَنِ السُّكَّرِ (ibtaʿid ʿani-s-sukkar) — "keep away from sugar."
| # | Sentence | Meaning | Parsing points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | الإِسْلَامُ نَهَى عَنِ الإِسْرَافِ | Islam has forbidden extravagance | الإِسْلَامُ = اسم · نَهَى = فعل · عَنْ = حرف (the verb demands it) |
| 2 | الأَكْلُ الكَثِيرُ يَضُرُّ الإِنْسَانَ | Eating a lot harms the human being | يَضُرُّ = فعل · الإِنْسَان = اسم |
| 3 | يُحَذِّرُ الأَطِبَّاءُ النَّاسَ | The doctors warn the people | يُحَذِّرُ = فعل · الأَطِبَّاء (doctors) and النَّاس = اسم |
| 4 | أَصْبَحَتِ البَدَانَةُ عَلَامَةً عَلَى المَرَضِ | Obesity has become a sign of illness | عَلَامَة = sign/mark · عَلَى = حرف |
| 5 | تَقَدَّمَ الطِّبُّ كَثِيراً | Medicine has advanced greatly | تَقَدَّمَ = فعل · الطِّبّ = اسم |
| 6 | نَتَنَاوَلُ كَثِيراً مِنَ السَّمَكِ | We eat a lot of fish | مِنْ = حرف جرّ — see the rule below |
| 7 | أَصْبَحَ النَّاسُ يَتَّبِعُونَ الحِمْيَةَ | People have taken to following the diet | اِتَّبَعَ = to follow · الحِمْيَة = the diet |
| 8 | يَأْكُلُونَ قَلِيلاً مِنَ اللَّحْمِ | They eat little meat | same مِنْ rule; one should eat only a little meat |
| 9 | هُنَاكَ أَمْرَاضٌ تُصِيبُ الشَّخْصَ السَّمِينَ | There are diseases that afflict the fat person | تُصِيبُ = فعل · أَمْرَاض = اسم · الشَّخْص السَّمِين = the obese person |
Why مِنْ has to be there (sentences 6 and 8)
كَثِيراً ("a lot") and قَلِيلاً ("a little") are general, unspecified on their own — a lot of what? مِنْ comes in to specify: نَتَنَاوَلُ كَثِيراً مِنَ السَّمَكِ = "we eat a lot of fish"; يَأْكُلُونَ قَلِيلاً مِنَ اللَّحْمِ = "they eat little of meat." Same trick, both sentences.
The Qur'anic sentences in the same exercise
Taking فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِلنَّاسِ apart, word by word, is the model:
- فِيهِ = فِي (a ḥarf) + the attached pronoun ـهِ ("it") — the hu / hum endings that join onto it.
- شِفَاءٌ = an اِسْم.
- لِلنَّاسِ = two things: لِ, a حَرْف جَرّ, plus النَّاس, an اِسْم.
A third Qur'anic phrase is cited in passing, الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ ("who taught by the pen," 96:4). [unclear — this citation is garbled in the ASR.]
8 · Why classify at all — the first step to الإِعْرَاب
This drill is the first stage of a whole discipline: الإِعْرَاب (al-iʿrāb). The Sheikh's comparison: iʿrāb is to Arabic sentences what tafsīr is to Qur'anic verses — for each sentence you say which word is the subject (mubtadaʾ / fāʿil), which the predicate, which the object, and how each word connects to the next. To do any of that you must first be able to say, of every word, whether it is a noun, a verb or a particle. Hence: this exercise is compulsory for everyone.
9 · التَّعْبِيرُ المُوَجَّهُ — guided expression (unscramble)
The second half is writing. التَّعْبِيرُ المُوَجَّهُ (at-taʿbīr al-muwajjah, "guided expression") gives you the words of a sentence jumbled, and you put them in the right order. They are all sentences already studied — so the drill is word order, not new vocabulary.
| Given (scrambled) | Correct sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| أَنْ · زَيْنَبُ · سَمِينَةً · تُرِيدُ · تَكُونَ | زَيْنَبُ تُرِيدُ أَنْ تَكُونَ سَمِينَةً | Zaynab wants to be fat |
| بِأَلَمٍ · كُنْتُ · أَشْعُرُ · البَدَنِ · مِثْلَكَ | كُنْتُ أَشْعُرُ بِأَلَمٍ فِي البَدَنِ مِثْلَكَ | I was feeling pain in the body, like you |
| يَتَنَاوَلُ · مِنَ · الطَّعَامِ · كَثِيراً · مُحَمَّدٌ | مُحَمَّدٌ يَتَنَاوَلُ كَثِيراً مِنَ الطَّعَامِ | Muhammad eats a great deal of food |
| الإِنْسَانَ · يُصِيبُ · بِالبَدَانَةِ · الكَثِيرُ · الأَكْلُ | الأَكْلُ الكَثِيرُ يُصِيبُ الإِنْسَانَ بِالبَدَانَةِ | Eating a lot afflicts a person with obesity |
| أَصْبَحَ · الحِمْيَةَ · يَتَّبِعُونَ · المَرْضَى · كَثِيرٌ · مِنَ | أَصْبَحَ كَثِيرٌ مِنَ المَرْضَى يَتَّبِعُونَ الحِمْيَةَ | Many of the sick have taken to following the diet |
Points made while ordering them:
- أَشْعُرُ (ashʿuru) = "I feel"; كُنْتُ أَشْعُرُ = "I was feeling"; مِثْلَكَ = "like you."
- أَخَذَ (akhadha) = "he took," and تَنَاوَلَ (tanāwala) likewise — it covers "took," "ate," and "set about [doing]." So yatanāwalu here is simply "he eats."
- The أَصْبَحَ frame keeps the same shape every time: أَصْبَحَ → the subject phrase → the verb phrase (aṣbaḥa yanāmūn, aṣbaḥa yattabiʿūn), as in sentence 7 of §7.
- An encouragement dropped in mid-drill: don't worry about getting it wrong — being wrong is not the issue; not trying is worse than the mistake.
10 · Picture composition — traditional vs modern food
Two pictures, three sentences each, comparing today's food with the food of the past.
- الصُّورَةُ عَلَى اليَمِينِ، الطَّعَامُ التَّقْلِيدِيُّ — the picture on the right is traditional food (the Sri Lankan food we grew up on). In it: الخُبْزُ، البَيْضُ، الجُبْنُ، الزَّيْتُونُ — bread, eggs, cheese, olives.
- الطَّعَامُ عَلَى اليَسَارِ، الطَّعَامُ الحَدِيثُ — on the left, modern food: one pizza that everyone eats together.
Traditional food — the three sentences
كَانَ + a present verb = "used to." That is the pattern to remember: كَانَ النَّاسُ يَأْكُلُونَ is not "people ate once" but "people used to eat."
Modern food — the three sentences
- الوَجَبَاتُ السَّرِيعَةُ (al-wajabāt as-sarīʿah) = fast food, literally "the quick meals."
- نُشَاهِدُ / نَرَى = "we see, we observe."
- سَبَب (sabab) = "cause, reason"; the verb is يُسَبِّبُ (yusabbibu, "it causes") — yusabbibu amrāḍan khaṭīrah, "it causes dangerous diseases."
- [unclear — the short digression on how to pronounce and spell البِيتْزَا in Arabic is garbled.]
11 · One نَصِيحَة per picture — advice in the imperative
The last exercise: from each picture, give one piece of advice about food and health. Four are prohibitions (لا + jussive) and the last is a positive command.
| Picture | The advice | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Milk being poured into a glass | لا تَشْرَبِ الحَلِيبَ كَامِلَ الدَّسَمِ | Do not drink full-cream milk (كَامِل الدَّسَم = full-fat; take the low-fat kind) |
| Tea or coffee with a lot of sugar — الشَّايُ أَوِ القَهْوَةُ مَعَ سُكَّرٍ كَثِيرٍ | لا تَضَعْ كَثِيراً مِنَ السُّكَّرِ فِي الشَّايِ | Do not put a lot of sugar in the tea (تَضَعُ = you put · لا تَضَعْ = don't put) |
| Fast food | لا تَأْكُلْ كَثِيراً مِنَ الوَجَبَاتِ السَّرِيعَةِ | Do not eat much fast food |
| A plate of rice with meat and curry | لا تَأْكُلْ كَثِيراً مِنَ الأَرُزِّ | Do not eat much rice |
| Someone eating vegetables, fruit and salad | كُلْ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ مِنَ الخُضْرَوَاتِ وَالسَّلَطَةِ | Eat of the food — of the vegetables and the salad (the one positive advice) |
- Also shown: السَّمَكُ المَشْوِيُّ (as-samak al-mashwī) = grilled fish — the picture of fish on the barbecue, a food many like; the Sheikh drilled the pronunciation as-samaku-l-mashwī.
- القَهْوَةُ بِالحَلِيبِ (al-qahwah bi-l-ḥalīb) = "coffee with milk," from the earlier class.
- Vocabulary of the last picture: الخُضْرَوَات (al-khuḍrawāt) = vegetables · الفَوَاكِه (al-fawākih) = fruits · السَّلَطَة (as-salaṭah) = salad.

13 · What the Sheikh set as homework
- Do the classification exercise for every sentence: of each underlined word say اسم، فعل or حرف — it is compulsory, and it is the doorway to iʿrāb.
- Read the unit's sentences again and again until they are familiar — they all sit under العِنَايَةُ بِالصِّحَّةِ.
- Write out in full all the composition sentences (the five unscrambled ones + the six picture sentences).
- Look at the pictures yourself and write more sentences of the same kind, using different words each time.

| There are diseases that afflict the fat person | هُنَاكَ أَمْرَاضٌ تُصِيبُ الشَّخْصَ السَّمِينَ |
- Why مِنْ? كَثِيراً / قَلِيلاً are vague alone — مِنْ specifies them: a lot of fish, little of meat.
- Qur'anic pair: فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِلنَّاسِ (16:69) · وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا (7:31).
- فِيهِ breaks into فِي (حرف) + ـهِ (pronoun); لِلنَّاسِ into لِ (حرف جرّ) + النَّاس (اسم).
- Why classify at all? it is step one of الإِعْرَاب — iʿrāb is to sentences what tafsīr is to verses.
