Arabic 1 — Fī l-ʿasali shifāʾ — the honey-cure dialogue فِي العَسَلِ شِفَاءٌ

1 · The unit title — العِنَايَةُ بِالصِّحَّةِ #

• عُنِيَ (ʿuniya) = "he gave attention / took care" — and it is always used with the preposition بِـ: عُنِيَ بِأُسْرَتِهِ (ʿuniya bi-usratihi) — "he took care of his family."
• Its maṣdar (verbal noun) is العِنَايَة (al-ʿināyah) = "caring, paying attention."
• الصِّحَّة (aṣ-ṣiḥḥah) = "health" — as in وِزَارَةُ الصِّحَّةِ (the Health Ministry).
• صَحِيح (ṣaḥīḥ) in everyday usage = "healthy / sound": طَعَامٌ صَحِيحٌ = healthy food. In ḥadīth science the same word is a technical term ("authentic") — that special usage is separate. Opposite: ضَعِيف (ḍaʿīf) = "weak."
• So العناية بالصحة = "taking care of one's health."
• The passage title: فِي العَسَلِ شِفَاءٌ — "in honey there is a cure." عَسَلٌ = honey (fatḥah on the sīn: ʿa-sa-l); شِفَاءٌ = cure/healing, from شَفَى (shafā) "he cured" — اللهُ هُوَ يَشْفِي, it is Allah who cures; اللهُ الشَّافِي, Allah is the Curer.

2 · The dialogue — الحِوَارُ بَيْنَ عَامِرٍ وَحَازِمٍ #

• The Qur'anic proof Ḥāzim quotes is ﴿فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ لِلنَّاسِ﴾ — Sūrat an-Naḥl 16:69: فِيهِ "in it (the honey)" · شِفَاءٌ "a cure" · لِلنَّاسِ — the لِـ is the preposition "for", النَّاس = "the people."

Verbs that take a fixed preposition #

• عُنِيَ بِـ — "took care of": عُنِيَ بِأُسْرَتِهِ.
• شَعَرَ بِـ — "felt": the بِـ always comes. أَشْعُرُ بِأَلَمٍ شَدِيدٍ فِي بَطْنِي — "I feel a severe pain in my stomach." Build your own sentences on the pattern: أَشْعُرُ بِأَلَمٍ فِي رَأْسِي (…in my head), أَشْعُرُ بِأَلَمٍ فِي قَلْبِي (…in my heart).
• سَمِعَ = "he heard"; with إِلَى — اسْتَمَعَ إِلَى — it becomes "he listened to" (like English listen to).

شَكَا / اشْتَكَى — who is the object, and what takes مِنْ #

• The person you complain to is the direct object (mafʿūl bihi) — no preposition. The thing/person you complain about takes مِنْ.
• Model sentence (memorize it): شَكَا زَيْدٌ المُدَرِّسَ مِنْ صَدِيقِهِ — "Zayd complained to the teacher about his friend" — NOT "against the teacher." Don't think through Tamil here.
• Asking "about whom?": مِنْ + مَنْ = مِمَّنْ — مِمَّنِ اشْتَكَى؟ Asking "about what?": مِنْ + مَا = مِمَّ — مِمَّ اشْتَكَى؟ → اشْتَكَى مِنْ بَطْنِهِ.
• Imam ash-Shāfiʿī's famous verse is an anchor for شَكَا (memorize it): شَكَوْتُ إِلَى وَكِيعٍ سُوءَ حِفْظِي — "I complained to Wakīʿ of my poor memory."

أَمَرَ takes a direct object — no لِـ #

• "He ordered Zayd" = أَمَرَ زَيْداً — the person ordered comes straight as the object, never with لِـ. So أَمَرَ أَخَاهُ = "he commanded his brother."

لَمْ + present verb = emphatic negated past #

• لَمْ before a present-tense verb flips it to a negated past and puts a sukūn on it (jussive): ذَهَبَ → يَذْهَبُ → لَمْ يَذْهَبْ.
• لَمْ أَذْهَبْ = "I did not go at all" — it emphasizes the not-going. وَلَمْ أَتَنَاوَلْ أَيَّ دَوَاءٍ = "and I did not take any medicine."

شَفَى vs. شُفِيَ — active vs. passive #

• شَفَى = "he cured" — it is Allah who cures: شَفَى اللهُ المَرِيضَ.
• For "the patient recovered / was cured", use the passive (majhūl): شُفِيَ — شُفِيَ المَرِيضُ · هَلْ شُفِيَ؟ = "did he recover?"
• شَفَاكَ اللهُ — a past-tense verb used as duʿāʾ: "may Allah cure you" (same pattern as جَزَاكَ اللهُ خَيْراً).

سَقَى and السِّقَايَة #

• سَقَى = "he gave to drink / he watered" (a person, a tree). In the story: he gave him honey(-water) to drink, ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ — three times.
• السِّقَايَة = supplying drinking water to the pilgrims (ḥujjāj) — historically the duty of the people of Makkah.
• For someone who gives you water, make duʿāʾ: "may Allah give you to drink in Paradise."

بَعْدَ + noun; بَعْدَ أَنْ + verb #

• After بَعْدَ (and its pair قَبْلَ) only a noun may come: بَعْدَ العَشَاءِ, بَعْدَ الغَدَاءِ, بَعْدَ المَوْتِ.
• To put a verb after it, attach أَنْ: the أَنْ makes a present verb naṣb (fatḥah on the end) and gives it a verbal-noun "-ing" sense: بَعْدَ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ = "after his going / after he goes"; بَعْدَ أَنْ ذَهَبَ = "after he went"; in the dialogue: بَعْدَ أَنْ سَقَاهُ ثَلاثَ مَرَّاتٍ.

Small but tested #

• Question hamzah أَ = هَلْ: أَمَرِيضٌ أَنْتَ؟ = هَلْ أَنْتَ مَرِيضٌ؟ — "are you sick?"
• سَـ before a present verb = future: سَأَتَنَاوَلُ "I will take", سَأَذْهَبُ "I will go."
• تُوجَدُ / يُوجَدُ = "there is/are": تُوجَدُ مَحَلَّاتٌ is feminine because مَحَلَّات is a feminine-form plural; يُوجَدُ طَعَامٌ = "there is food."
• Proverb-style saying: لِكُلِّ دَاءٍ دَوَاءٌ — "for every disease there is a medicine."

1. Re-read the ḥiwār as many times as you can — internalize it, then work without looking.
2. Exercise 1: five sentences — mark each ✓/✗ against the dialogue and correct the wrong ones.
3. Exercise 2: four sentences from the passage — put them in the order they occur in the ḥiwār.
4. Memorize the plurals above.
5. Fill-in-the-blanks with the four verbs (اشْتَرَى · شَعَرَ · تَنَاوَلَ · شَفَى), e.g. شَعَرَ بِأَلَمٍ فِي رَأْسِهِ · اشْتَرَى عَسَلاً مِنَ السُّوقِ · شَفَى اللهُ المَرِيضَ (but شُفِيَ المَرِيضُ for "he recovered") · تَنَاوَلَ الغَدَاءَ.
