Arabic 1 — Fī l-ʿasali shifāʾ — the honey-cure dialogue فِي العَسَلِ شِفَاءٌ

Unit 1 opener · the ʿĀmir & Ḥāzim dialogue · health vocab · verbs with fixed prepositions (ʿuniya bi-, shaʿara bi-, ishtakā min) · lam, shufiya, baʿda an. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

First lecture of Semester 2 (Sheikh Riyas, video 45). The class opened Book 2 Part 1 of العربية بين يديك — 16 units in the book, the first 8 this semester — and took the first passage of Unit 1: العِنَايَةُ بِالصِّحَّةِ (Care of Health): the dialogue فِي العَسَلِ شِفَاءٌ ("In honey there is a cure") between ʿĀmir and Ḥāzim, with its vocabulary and usage points. The unit's grammar rules come next class — this lesson stops where the class stopped.

1 · The unit title — العِنَايَةُ بِالصِّحَّةِ

2 · The dialogue — الحِوَارُ بَيْنَ عَامِرٍ وَحَازِمٍ

The class read the whole ḥiwār first, then went word by word. Read it many, many times — that was the Sheikh's core instruction.

4 · Usage points the Sheikh drilled

Verbs that take a fixed preposition

شَكَا / اشْتَكَى — who is the object, and what takes مِنْ

أَمَرَ takes a direct object — no لِـ

لَمْ + present verb = emphatic negated past

شَفَى vs. شُفِيَ — active vs. passive

سَقَى and السِّقَايَة

بَعْدَ + noun; بَعْدَ أَنْ + verb

Small but tested

5 · Plurals to memorize

Singular مفردPlural جمعMeaning
أَلَمٌآلامٌpain → pains
مَرَضٌأَمْرَاضٌdisease → diseases
مَرِيضٌمَرْضَىsick person → sick people
طَبِيبٌأَطِبَّاءُdoctor → doctors

6 · Homework the Sheikh set

  1. Re-read the ḥiwār as many times as you can — internalize it, then work without looking.
  2. Exercise 1: five sentences — mark each ✓/✗ against the dialogue and correct the wrong ones.
  3. Exercise 2: four sentences from the passage — put them in the order they occur in the ḥiwār.
  4. Memorize the plurals above.
  5. Fill-in-the-blanks with the four verbs (اشْتَرَى · شَعَرَ · تَنَاوَلَ · شَفَى), e.g. شَعَرَ بِأَلَمٍ فِي رَأْسِهِ · اشْتَرَى عَسَلاً مِنَ السُّوقِ · شَفَى اللهُ المَرِيضَ (but شُفِيَ المَرِيضُ for "he recovered") · تَنَاوَلَ الغَدَاءَ.
  6. Check answers only after attempting; revise promptly — "it's when you delay that you forget."
Where the class stopped. This lecture covered only the first passage of Unit 1 — the honey dialogue, its vocabulary and usage. The unit's grammar rules section comes next lesson, and the rest of Unit 1 (the Zaynab & Maryam reading, the doctor–patient dialogue, the health past-and- present reading, sounds/punctuation/khaṭṭ) has not been taught yet — it continues next class.
Crib sheet. Cover the meaning column and recall. Only what lecture v45 taught — the honey dialogue and its words; Unit 1 grammar rules come next class.
