Fiqh Al-Ibadah 4 — Ṣalāh begins — the seven stations, and where the five prayers come from الصَّلاة

The Ṭahārah track is finished and the chapter on ṣalāh opens — the seven stations of prayer, and where the five come from. · Exam: Sem 2 · date TBD

What this lesson covers
The Ṭahārah track is finished and the chapter on ṣalāh opens. The spine of the lesson is the seven maqāmāt (stations) of prayer: ṭahārah (outer purity of body, clothing and limbs — and the inner purity the Ṭahārah chapter never covered: deceit, vanity, looking down on others) · ḥuḍūr (the consciousness of standing before Allah, with the standing-before-the-president analogy, and what breaks it) · ittibāʿ (is my prayer as the Prophet ﷺ prayed — ṣallū kamā raʾaytumūnī uṣallī) · ikhlāṣ · inkisār (the slave before his Master; the takbīr as surrender) · khawf · rajāʾ. Then the four kinds of prayer — munāfiqīn · sāhīn/ghāfilīn · mujāhidīn · khāshiʿīn — and the instruction to aim at least for the mujāhidīn's list. Then what ṣalāh is: takbīr to taslīm, ṣalāh = duʿā, its three components duʿā / dhikr / tilāwah, and the book's wisdoms. Then where it comes from: the practice of the prophets, two rakʿah before the five, the Isrāʾ and Miʿrāj with fifty reduced to five, and the five made obligatory eighteen months before the Hijrah. Then the evidences — implicit in the Qurʾān (kitāban mawqūtā; the ar-Rūm āyah via Ibn ʿAbbās) and explicit in the Sunnah (Muʿādh sent to Yemen; the bedouin's question). Closes with the Ḥanafī witr dispute (farḍ vs wājib as separate categories) and abandoning the prayer (Ḥanbalī vs Shāfiʿī/jumhūr; laziness is not apostasy; execution only under an Islamic government and only after being called to repent).
The Ṭahārah track is closed and the chapter on ṣalāh opens here — Lessons 1–3 (nifās, ghusl, tayammum) finished it, and this lesson begins the next chapter of al-Fiqh al-Manhajī. This is a wide lesson rather than a deep one: seven stations, four kinds of prayer, the meaning of ṣalāh, its origin at the Miʿrāj, the evidences for the five, the Ḥanafī witr dispute, and the ruling on abandoning the prayer. The seven stations are the spine — everything else hangs off them.

1 · Why this chapter is the one that matters #

Prayer is the act of worship that is a conversation. Put as a chain:

If you want to……then
speak to Allahpray
have Allah speak to yourecite the Qurʾān

And the reason the chapter carries the weight it does:

If the prayer is sound, the whole life is sound.

Prayer is the connection. Allah says:

أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِى

Aqim aṣ-ṣalāta li-dhikrī — "Establish the prayer for My remembrance."

2 · The problem the chapter is aimed at #

You can complete a prayer and have been absent from all of it.

al-Ghazālī's test: if you recite the supplications and adhkār of the prayer without understanding their meanings, how will khushūʿ ever come? Understanding is not an optional refinement — it is the mechanism.

The requirement: in the prayer the conscious mind must be engaged — I must understand what I am reciting as I am reciting it.

3 · The seven stations (maqāmāt) — the spine of the lesson #

These are stages towards nearness to Allah, and all seven must be present for the prayer to be complete.

#StationIn short
1مَقام الطَّهارة — maqām aṭ-ṭahārahPurity — and it has two sides, only one of which the Ṭahārah chapter covered
2مَقام الحُضور — maqām al-ḥuḍūrPresence — the consciousness that you are standing before Allah
3مَقام الاتِّباع — maqām al-ittibāʿFollowing — is the prayer as the Prophet ﷺ prayed it?
4مَقام الإخلاص — maqām al-ikhlāṣSincerity — for Allah alone, not for display
5مَقام الانكِسار — maqām al-inkisārBrokenness, reverence — the slave before his Master
6مَقام الخَوف — maqām al-khawfFear — consciousness of Allah's greatness, majesty and power
7مَقام الرَّجاء — maqām ar-rajāʾHope — that He accepts what you managed

4 · Station 1 — ṭahārah, and the half we never studied #

The point: the whole Ṭahārah chapter — nifās, ghusl, tayammum, wuḍūʾ — taught one side of purity. There are two.
What it is
Outer purityThe body clean, the clothing clean, the limbs clean — and the obligatory ghusl where it is due. This is what the Ṭahārah chapter taught.
Inner purityThe heart clean of deceit, arrogance and vanity, and regarding other people as beneath you. "Diseases of this kind arise in connection with the inner self."

Both must be clean. A body washed for a heart that was never washed does not complete this station.

5 · Station 2 — ḥuḍūr, presence #

The consciousness that you are standing before Allah, held in the mind from beginning to end.

The analogy. Imagine you are in the president's presence, from the moment you walk in until you walk out. What is in your mind the whole time? I am standing before the president. I must be proper. I must behave accordingly. I must not misbehave in any way. I will keep my eyes on him. Just so in the prayer — except that the One you are standing before is Allah.

This is the conscious / unconscious distinction: in the right state, whoever comes or goes is nothing to you — there is no other subject in your mind. It is like going to someone's house and sitting down with him one to one.

What breaks this station:

6 · Station 3 — ittibāʿ, following the Prophet ﷺ #

Is the prayer I pray the prayer the Prophet ﷺ demonstrated? From the first takbīr to the salām, is every part of it as it should be?

The trap: we go on praying in whatever style we picked up as small children — not knowing where the hands go or what to do at each point. Double-check your own prayer. What is required is the sunnah, not an inherited family custom.

«صَلُّوا كَمَا رَأَيْتُمُونِي أُصَلِّي»

Ṣallū kamā raʾaytumūnī uṣallī — "Pray as you have seen me pray."

7 · Station 4 — ikhlāṣ, sincerity #

Not for anyone's sake and not for display — I pray for Allah alone.

8 · Station 5 — inkisār, standing as a slave #

I stand before my Rabb. A Rabb is the Master; I am the slave. The question the station asks is: how does a slave stand before his master?

The physical acts of the prayer say exactly this:

ActWhat it says
The takbīrI am Allah's slave; to Allah I have surrendered. It is made before Allah, never before people — there is no room for self-glorification in it
The rukūʿBowing the head, for Allah's sake
The sujūd"Before Allah I am nothing."

The book renders this station as "reverence"; its sense is humility.

9 · Stations 6 and 7 — fear, and hope #

Sixth — khawf, fear. If we do not pray properly, Allah may punish — and if Allah begins to punish, no one can prevent it. The book's wording: to be conscious of Allah's greatness, majesty and power.

Seventh — rajāʾ, hope. The counterweight, and the note the list ends on:

With whatever capacity I have, I have prayed. Allah is the Merciful, and He will accept it. Or, from the book: "O Allah, somehow I have prayed — accept this from me; and the next prayer, let me pray better than this."

10 · Quality before quantity #

A direct instruction, and the order matters:

First raise the quality. Second, raise the quantity.

Voluntary prayer — tahajjud and the rest — is the second thing, not the first. The target is to take specific prayers and make them high-premium quality: Ṣubḥ's two rakʿah and its sunnah, and of Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, Maghrib and ʿIshāʾ, the four-rakʿah ones — make one of them a high-quality prayer, then build the habit.

And the reason this belongs in fiqh at all: "Studying is not about texts alone — it must become action, without fail, in every single prayer."

11 · The four kinds of prayer #

#KindWho prays it
1صَلاة المُنافِقين — ṣalāt al-munāfiqīnThe prayer of the hypocrites
2صَلاة السّاهين — ṣalāt as-sāhīn (also ṣalāt al-ghāfilīn)The forgetful, heedless prayer — you are not a hypocrite, but the consciousness is simply absent: auto-pilot
3صَلاة المُجاهِدين — ṣalāt al-mujāhidīnThe prayer of one who is trying: the mind wanders, the consciousness comes and goes, other thoughts arrive — and he fights. "Fighting with your nafs, with your shayṭān"
4صَلاة الخاشِعين — ṣalāt al-khāshiʿīnThe prayer of the truly humbled
The practical instruction: among the elders you find someone who says "I tried for twenty years, and my prayer became ṣalāt al-khāshiʿīn." So after all that fighting — at the very least we must arrive on some list: the mujāhidīn's list, and from there a little of the khāshiʿīn.

And the distinction that follows: the farḍ is discharged the moment you give the salām — that obligation is met. But discharging the obligation is not the point of the prayer. The point is Allah's remembrance.

12 · What ṣalāh actually is #

QuestionAnswer
Where does the prayer begin and end? From the takbīr to the taslīm — the takbīrat al-iḥrām (Allāhu akbar) to the giving of the salām
What does the word mean?Ṣalāh means duʿā — asking of Allah, supplication
What is it made of?Three components: 1 duʿā · 2 dhikr · 3 tilāwah (reciting the Qurʾān)
Duʿā is the main part of the prayer. "Doing dhikr, making duʿā — that is all it is."

The wisdom of prayer, in the book's own words:

"Prayer has many wisdoms and profound purposes… First, it reminds the person of his true identity and makes him aware that he is a servant who belongs to Allah Almighty. It also helps him remain conscious of the reality."

And from the wuḍūʾ chapter: as each limb is washed, the sins that limb committed fall away — and in the prayer the cleansing goes further.

13 · Where the five daily prayers come from #

Prayer was the practice of the prophets from the very beginning — Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi as-salām and Mūsā ʿalayhi as-salām are named. Before the five were made obligatory, the practice was two rakʿah.

Then al-Isrāʾ wa-l-Miʿrāj, in the ḥadīth of al-Bukhārī and Muslim:

14 · The evidences for the five #

In the Qurʾān the five prayers are not stated directly — they come implicitly.

إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا

Inna ṣ-ṣalāta kānat ʿalā l-muʾminīna kitāban mawqūtā (an-Nisāʾ 4:103)

"Indeed, prayer has been prescribed upon the believers at fixed times." — kitāban mawqūtā, fixed times: within those times we pray.

There is also an āyah in Sūrat ar-Rūm in which, in Ibn ʿAbbās's words, the five prayers are contained — the evening and the morning and the rest.

Explicitly, the evidence is in the Sunnah — two ḥadīths:

#The evidence
1Muʿādh ibn Jabal raḍiyallāhu ʿanhu sent to Yemen — call them first to Allah, to tawḥīd, and then the prayer.
2The bedouin (aʿrābī) who asked, "how much must I pray?" — He ﷺ said: "Five prayers in a day and a night." The man asked, "Is there anything more than this upon me?" He ﷺ said: "No — unless you volunteer something extra."

The further ḥadīths the class read from the book at this point were not recorded.

15 · The Ḥanafī dispute — is witr obligatory? #

A genuinely disputed question.

Position
The ḤanafīsWitr is wājib, and so are the two rakʿah before Ṣubḥ
The Shāfiʿīs — "we"Only the five daily prayers are obligatory. The Ṣubḥ sunnah is sunnah; the witr is sunnah
The engine of the disagreement is a category difference, not a proof-text. For the Ḥanafīs, farḍ is one category, wājib another, and sunnah a third. For the Shāfiʿīs the division does not run that way. So the two schools are not simply reading the same evidence differently — they are sorting obligations into different boxes. The dispute is held even-handedly: "For us the evidence is clear — that is our position, the Shāfiʿī madhhab; but they too justify their view with a great deal of argument in their own way. This is a disputable matter."

16 · Abandoning the prayer #

Two cases must be separated:

The caseThe ruling
He refuses — says "I will not pray" while understanding it is an obligationThis is the case that leads to the apostasy ruling
He leaves it out of lazinessHe never becomes a murtadd. He must repent, and afterwards he must be brought back to the prayer

The schools:

Position on abandoning the prayer out of laziness
The ḤanbalīsYou are not a Muslim
The Shāfiʿīs and the jumhūrAbandoning the prayer does not make him a murtadd

And the two conditions on the execution ruling — both essential, and both easy to drop:

  1. It applies only where there is an Islamic government. "None of this arises otherwise."
  2. He is first given time and called to repent. The book's wording: "The ruler must order him to repent. If he repents and establishes the prayer, then that is sufficient. Otherwise he is to be executed as an apostate."

17 · Closing — the thirst for knowledge #

"This is deep knowledge; properly deep. Islamic knowledge is deep — only if you take it up properly does it settle in the mind. For that there must be a thirst for learning; a person must give time to it."

You have it easy. In earlier times people travelled from country to country and sat at the teacher's feet; now we study from wherever we are — so we must give it proper respect and not undermine it.

Cold-recall crib for the opening lesson on ṣalāh. The seven stations are the exam spine — be able to name them in order, in Arabic, and say what each one is. After that: the four kinds of prayer, the three components of ṣalāh, the Miʿrāj numbers, the two explicit Sunnah evidences, the Ḥanafī witr dispute, and the two cases of abandoning the prayer.
