1 · Recap of Lesson 1 — four points, briefly (10:14–16:01)
The session begins by going back over [Lesson 1](../01-what-is-aqeedah/). Nothing new is added here, so it is compressed to four lines; the full treatment is on that page.
| Recap point | As restated in this class |
|---|---|
| Creed must not stay academic | ʿAqīdah must not remain a set-apart subject on paper. What it has to do is take hold of a person's īmān. This is the foundation |
| ʿAqīdah vs sharīʿah | ʿAqīdah = the matters connected with belief; sharīʿah = the matters connected with the rulings and the laws. Both exist, but ʿaqīdah is the foundation — "the building will be strong when my foundation is right" |
| The three matters | 1. what is connected with Allah — a clear idea in that · 2. nubuwwah / risālah — what must be believed about Rasūlullāh ﷺ and the prophets · 3. al-maʿād — what is connected with the Hereafter. "We will study all of that" |
| The four sources | Re-elicited from the students: 1. the Qurʾān · 2. the Sunnah · 3. ijmāʿ · 4. al-fiṭrah, our own innate nature |
On fiṭrah, one line was added. Nature says: there is a Creator. Once nature has asked the question that way, Islam guides us to the answer. Put generally: if a man thinks genuinely about Allah's creation, he arrives at the recognition of a Creator. That much nature itself says.
2 · The new subject: what is not a source of ʿaqīdah (16:01–17:54)
This is the heart of the class. We have the four sources; the question now is what we must refuse to take creed from — "sometimes we take our ʿaqīdah not from those sources".
2.1 Personal opinion — including an imam's
We go by personal opinion. And note who this includes: these can even be imams. Some imams will have a personal opinion —
- concerning the ʿArsh of Allah and where it is;
- concerning the dhāt (essence) and the ṣifāt (attributes) of Allah;
- concerning the actions of human beings — which is also a matter belonging to ʿaqīdah.
On matters that touch on shirk, there are personal opinions. Those we do not take as a source of ʿaqīdah.
2.2 Dreams
People build things up out of dreams. But when we see a dream, we may not construct an ʿaqīdah out of it.
2.3 Philosophy, speculation, blind imitation
Listed together and rejected together: philosophy · pure speculation · blind imitation.
2.4 An individual who offers himself as your guide
And so too if a single individual says to us, "do it this way, I will be your guide" — even then, no.
The reason given for the whole list:
| Sources of ʿaqīdah (Lesson 1) | Not sources of ʿaqīdah (this class) |
|---|---|
| the Qurʾān | personal opinion — including an imam's |
| the Sunnah | dreams |
| ijmāʿ | philosophy |
| al-fiṭrah | pure speculation |
| blind imitation | |
| an individual guide — "I will be your guide" | |
| (at least one further item, lost in the recording) |
3 · Al-ʿaqīdah as-salīmah — the first obligation (17:54–19:21)
All of that rests on one thing: the importance of a correct belief. The Arabic term already used in the course is al-ʿaqīdah as-salīmah.
| Term | Arabic | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| salīmah | سَلِيمَة | sound, upright — with no adulteration in it whatsoever |
| al-ʿaqīdah as-salīmah | الْعَقِيدَةُ السَّلِيمَة | sound creed: the correct belief |
A correct ʿaqīdah is the foundation of the whole edifice of worship. How important is it?
4 · Without sound creed, no act of worship is accepted (19:21–21:20)
That was the first point. The second: without our ʿaqīdah being a sound ʿaqīdah, whatever ʿibādah we perform, that ʿibādah will not be accepted.
Keep this in mind about worship. If the ʿaqīdah is not clear — or if there is riyāʾ (showing off) in it — then that act of worship will not be accepted by Allah.
If a man has no clear view of it, then here too his acts of worship will not be accepted. So before we turn our attention to anything else, we must think about this:
5 · Shirk — the one sin that is not forgiven (21:20–21:47)
Anything that does not turn back to Allah alone becomes shirk. And keep this in mind:
6 · Hidden like a black ant on a black rock (21:47–22:45)
And about that shirk, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
The image the class drew out of it: a dark night. A black boulder. A small ant creeping across it. Would we make it out? We would not.
7 · The shirk we recognise, and the shirk we do not (22:45–23:44)
When shirk is mentioned we have one particular picture of it:
| The shirk we already picture | The shirk we do not |
|---|---|
| going to graves and making duʿāʾ there | shirk that belongs to thought — ideological shirk |
| tying amulets (taʿwīdh) | certain forms of shirk that live in how a person conceives things |
| tying threads |
"We will look at that too" — the ideological side is promised for a later class and is not taught here.
(Note for continuity: graves appear in this class only as an example of what people already recognise as shirk. The full treatment of ziyārat al-qubūr, deferred in Lesson 1, was deferred again — folded into the new promise to treat ideological shirk.)
8 · What sound creed produces — 1. inner peace (23:44–24:38)
The class now turns from the danger to the fruits. The first is inner peace.
If our ʿaqīdah is clear, an inward calm — peace of heart — comes to us.
Why does that peace come? Because we become patient. And where does the patience come from? From the conviction that nothing can act against Allah's will.
9 · Mūsā at the sea — "My Lord is with me" (24:38–25:36)
The worked example. Pharaoh came out after them; they were running; the two hosts came in sight of one another. Those with Mūsā ʿalayhi's-salām said:
The sea in front, the army behind. But Mūsā ʿalayhi's-salām says another word:
10 · Confidence, ṣabr, tawakkul (25:36–27:31)
Very clear. He has no fear. They placed complete trust in Allah. Hardship comes — and when hardship comes our strength gives way — but Allah will not abandon His servant.
He is ar-Razzāq, the Provider; He is the one who helps.
Look at all of this in the Companions. That confidence: He is Allah. Without His command nothing moves. With that belief — He will help; He will protect — nothing can shake a man.
And how do those qualities come? By our ʿaqīdah being firm, and by our ʿaqīdah being pure.
11 · Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi's-salām — the same creed, three verses (30:56–31:55)
Raised in answer to a student's question, and taken as the second example alongside Mūsā. When Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi's-salām speaks about Allah, he goes line after line:
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| الَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ | alladhī huwa yuṭʿimunī wa yasqīn | "It is He who feeds me and gives me drink" |
| وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ | wa idhā mariḍtu fa-huwa yashfīn | "And when I am ill, it is He who cures me" |
| وَالَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ | wa'lladhī yumītunī thumma yuḥyīn | "And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life" |
These verses are in Sūrat ash-Shuʿarāʾ — and it is there too that the account of Mūsā ʿalayhi's-salām and Pharaoh comes. Both examples, one sūrah.
12 · What sound creed produces — 2. protection against deviation (27:31–30:36)
Shayṭān will show us all manner of things to lead us astray. The routes named:
| The routes of misguidance named in class |
|---|
| wealth · comforts and opportunities · influence · authority · money |
But if the belief is there — a firm, clear belief about Allah, about the Last Day, about the Books, about the prophets, about the angels, about qaḍāʾ and qadar — then, by Allah's help, we cannot easily be led astray.
And the mechanism: new things that come along become hard to take in without testing them, because a man has a pure ʿaqīdah to measure them against.
To understand the meaning clearly and to put it into practice — that is what a pure, clear ʿaqīdah is.
The fruits, gathered
| # | Fruit of al-ʿaqīdah as-salīmah |
|---|---|
| 1 | Inner peace — alā bi-dhikri'llāhi taṭmaʾinnu'l-qulūb |
| 2 | Ṣabr — patience, because nothing acts against Allah's will |
| 3 | Tawakkul — trust; "Without His command nothing moves" |
| 4 | Protection against shirk, misguidance and bidʿah — and a standard to measure new things against |
| 5 | Acceptance of our worship — the negative stated positively |
| 6 | Success in the Hereafter |
13 · Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l-Jamāʿah (31:55–33:16)
Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l-Jamāʿah — the term is familiar. Who are they?
What the term is taken to mean here:
| Element | Statement |
|---|---|
| The group that walks by the evidence | in ʿaqīdah, a group that goes first to the evidence |
| In whose way | the way of the Tābiʿīn and the Tabaʿ at-Tābiʿīn |
And the contrast — how creedal matters get transmitted wrongly: by personal opinion; by "this man's dream, that man's dream"; and by things said as invented tales.
There is sufficiently clear evidence in the Qurʾān and the Sunnah — so on that there is no room for us to compromise.
14 · Follow no guru (36:58–37:56)
And the order the lecturer gave for ʿaqīdah:
| # | What we go to |
|---|---|
| 1 | the Qurʾān |
| 2 | the salaf aṣ-ṣāliḥīn — "and when we say salaf we mean the Companions and the Tābiʿīn" |
| 3 | putting it into practice — the articles of faith |
(This is the same rule as §2.4, arrived at from the other end: not an individual's opinion, and not an individual's authority.)
15 · The six pillars of īmān — and how they are to be believed (37:57–38:54)
The articles of faith, as recited in class:
| # | Pillar | Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Allah | بِاللهِ |
| 2 | His angels | وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ |
| 3 | His Books | وَكُتُبِهِ |
| 4 | His Messengers | وَرُسُلِهِ |
| 5 | the Last Day | وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ |
| 6 | the Decree, its good and its evil, from Allah | وَبِالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ مِنَ اللهِ تَعَالَى |
On these we must have a correct understanding, a clear one — and the course will take them one by one.
The question the course is built on
Each of these has to be spelled out. That question — the manner of believing, not merely the fact of it — is what the remaining classes are for.
16 · The worked example: the two extremes about the Messenger ﷺ (38:54–40:22)
The rule first: we are to hold to the middle. On Allah there are extremes; and on the Messengers there are extremes.
The fourth matter to be believed in is the Messengers, the prophets. You must believe in Rasūlullāh ﷺ, and that he is the final Messenger. And after that, two extreme positions exist:
| The position | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|
| Extreme A | The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was an ordinary man and no more | An extreme |
| Extreme B | The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was light (nūr), not a man — or that Allah Himself appeared in the form of the Messenger | An extreme |
| The middle | Moderation — the moderate position | The correct one |
(The precise wording of the second extreme is partly garbled in the recording. The two poles — "merely an ordinary man" against "nūr / a manifestation of Allah" — are what comes through, and nothing beyond them is stated here.)
17 · Coming topics, in his own words (40:22–43:13)
Named as still to be taken, in detail, in the coming classes:
| Topic | As stated |
|---|---|
| Ideological / hidden shirk | "We will look at that too" |
| The six articles one by one | with the manner of believing each |
| Unity | "the unity that belongs to ʿaqīdah — how we are to hold to it without splitting apart" |
| Respect for the Companions | "how we honour them" — and being balanced in any matter |
| A clear standpoint on a given question | The Arabic term given here is badly mangled in the recording — very likely al-walāʾ wa'l-barāʾ, but the token is not clear enough to assert, so it is not asserted |
| How we are to place our love (ḥubb) | |
| How we are to fear Allah's punishment | |
| "We will look at it practically" |
The closing statement of the class:
A course outline for the subject was said to have been circulated to the group outside the recording; the class ends on that logistical note rather than on a topic.
What this class did NOT cover
- The lecturer is not named. The audio contains no statement identifying who is teaching. The pre-class greetings do carry names, but they are participants greeting one another and the ASR mangles them past safe reconstruction. No attribution is made on this page, and continuity of lecturer from Lesson 1 must not be assumed.
- The āḥād / mutawātir question was raised in class, and its conclusion is not recoverable. The lecturer asked the students what ḥadīth āḥād and ḥadīth mutawātir are, noted that the classification turns on the chain of narrators — the number of narrators who transmit a ḥadīth, and whether so many could together have spoken a falsehood — and moved toward the question of which kind of report may establish creed. From that point the recording does not survive intact. The numerical threshold he gave is unreliable in the transcript and is deliberately not reproduced here; and his own conclusion on whether an āḥād report establishes creed is not recoverable. No position on that question is stated on this page, and nothing on it is examinable. (What is clear and is stated above: for a verse of the Qurʾān "there is no doubt at all", and in ʿaqīdah one does not go by a single individual — §14.)
- The three divisions of tawḥīd (rubūbiyyah, ulūhiyyah, al-asmāʾ wa'ṣ-ṣifāt), promised in Lesson 1, were not touched at all. The only triad revisited is the different one — tawḥīd / risālah / al-maʿād.
- The kalimah and the asmāʾ wa'ṣ-ṣifāt, also promised in Lesson 1, were not studied. Asmāʾ wa ṣifāt appears only in passing — as one of the areas where personal opinions intrude (§2.1), and via ar-Razzāq in the tawakkul passage (§10).
- Ziyārat al-qubūr was deferred again. Graves appear in one line only, as an example of what people already recognise as shirk.
- Madhhab adherence in ʿaqīdah vs fiqh, explicitly deferred in Lesson 1, was not revisited as such. The class asserts that in ʿaqīdah one follows neither an individual nor a guru, and that personal opinions — including imams' — are not a source; but the promised treatment of madhhab adherence itself, and the ʿaqīdah/fiqh flexibility contrast, did not come.
- At least one item in the list of non-sources (§2.3) is lost to the recording and is not guessed at.
- The first ten minutes (00:30–10:14) are not teaching — joining, greetings, audio checks, and a discussion about uploading the previous recording. Nothing from them is on this page.
- Three silent gaps exist in the recording (00:52–04:40, 30:36–30:56, 42:37–42:45), and the closing minute is largely unintelligible. The class does not cut off mid-topic, but where exactly the course outline was posted and who received it is unclear.
What this class was
| Item | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which class | The second Aqeeda class, 2026-08-05 (video 2) |
| Format | An online class — not the residential programme |
| Who taught it | The recording does not name the lecturer. Do not assume continuity from Lesson 1 |
| Where teaching starts | 10:14 — the first ten minutes are logistics |
| What it does first | Recaps Lesson 1 — see that page ([Lesson 1](../01-what-is-aqeedah/)) |
| Its own new subject | What is not a source of ʿaqīdah |
The recap, in four lines
| Prompt | Answer |
|---|---|
| Creed must not be… | a set-apart academic subject — it must take hold of a person's īmān |
| ʿAqīdah vs sharīʿah | belief vs the rulings and the laws; ʿaqīdah is the foundation — strong foundation, strong building |
| The three matters | 1. what is connected with Allah · 2. nubuwwah / risālah · 3. al-maʿād — the Hereafter |
| The four sources | Qurʾān · Sunnah · ijmāʿ · al-fiṭrah |
| What fiṭrah says | There is a Creator — and once nature asks the question that way, Islam guides us to the answer |
Sources against non-sources — the table to know cold
| Sources (Lesson 1) | Not sources (this class) |
|---|---|
| the Qurʾān | personal opinion — including an imam's |
| the Sunnah | dreams |
| al-ijmāʿ | philosophy |
| al-fiṭrah | pure speculation |
| blind imitation | |
| an individual guide — "do it this way, I will be your guide" | |
| (at least one further item lost in the recording) |
| Prompt | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where do imams' personal opinions intrude? | On the ʿArsh of Allah and where it is · on the dhāt and the ṣifāt · on the actions of human beings |
| Why is the whole list refused? | ʿAqīdah must be completely pure — no adulteration of any kind in it |
| Dreams | We may not construct an ʿaqīdah out of a dream |
Al-ʿaqīdah as-salīmah
| Prompt | Answer |
|---|---|
| salīmah سَلِيمَة | sound, upright — with no adulteration whatsoever |
| What is the first obligation? | Correct belief — then ʿibādah |
| Why first? | The first thing is that Allah be worshipped — and this is what every messenger was sent with |
| What is it the foundation of? | The whole edifice of worship |
| If the ʿaqīdah is not sound? | Whatever ʿibādah we perform will not be accepted |
| The other thing that voids worship | Riyāʾ — showing off |
| The mechanism named | Then it is shirk — that is the layer between accepted and not accepted |
| The self-check | "Is this ʿaqīdah of mine salīmah?" |
Shirk
| Arabic / prompt | Answer |
|---|---|
| إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ | an-Nisāʾ 48 — Allah forgives every sin, but shirk He does not forgive (the lecturer gave the meaning, not the recitation) |
| الشِّرْكُ أَخْفَى مِنْ دَبِيبِ النَّمْلِ | ash-shirku akhfā min dabībi'n-naml — "Shirk is more hidden than the creeping of an ant" |
| The image drawn from it | A dark night · a black boulder · a small ant creeping across it — would we make it out? We would not |
| The application | More hidden than that, shirk enters our hearts. Shayṭān brings it along to lead us astray |
| What becomes shirk | Anything that does not turn back to Allah alone |
| The shirk we picture | The shirk we do not |
|---|---|
| graves and making duʿāʾ there · amulets (taʿwīdh) · tying threads | Shirk of thought — ideological shirk, the forms that live in how a person conceives things — promised for a later class, not taught here |
The fruits of sound creed
| # | Fruit | The evidence / phrase |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Inner peace | أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ — ar-Raʿd 28, "in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest" |
| 2 | Ṣabr | Nothing can act against Allah's will |
| 3 | Tawakkul | "He is Allah. Without His command nothing moves" — He is ar-Razzāq |
| 4 | Protection against deviation | Shirk, misguidance and bidʿah cannot get in — and new things become hard to take in without testing them, because there is a pure ʿaqīdah to measure them against |
| 5 | Worship accepted | the rule of §4, stated positively |
| 6 | Success in the Hereafter | "A pure ʿaqīdah is the cause of success in the Hereafter" |
The proportion rule: however high the level of that confidence in us, exactly that much inner peace we will have.
How the ṣabr and tawakkul of the Companions came about: by their ʿaqīdah being firm and being pure.
How shayṭān leads astray — the routes named: wealth · comforts and opportunities · influence · authority · money
What firm belief must be about, for that protection: Allah · the Last Day · the Books · the prophets · the angels · qaḍāʾ and qadar
The two prophetic examples — both in Sūrat ash-Shuʿarāʾ
| Arabic | Who / meaning |
|---|---|
| إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ | Those with Mūsā at the sea — "We are surely overtaken!" (sea in front, army behind) |
| كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ | Mūsā ʿalayhi's-salām — "No! Indeed, my Lord is with me; He will guide me" (ash-Shuʿarāʾ 61–62). That is ʿaqīdah |
| الَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ | Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi's-salām — "It is He who feeds me and gives me drink" |
| وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ | "And when I am ill, it is He who cures me" |
| وَالَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ | "And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life" |
The link the lecturer drew: these Ibrāhīm verses are in Sūrat ash-Shuʿarāʾ — and the account of Mūsā and Pharaoh is there too.
Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l-Jamāʿah
| Prompt | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is the name contested? | Yes — "a great contest over that name." The lecturer did not adjudicate it |
| What he said instead | "We must be Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l-Jamāʿah — all of us" |
| Who they are, as given | The group that walks by the evidence, in the way of the Tābiʿīn and the Tabaʿ at-Tābiʿīn — in ʿaqīdah, first to the evidence |
| The wrong ways creed gets transmitted | personal opinion · "this man's dream, that man's dream" · invented tales |
| What they did instead | Went directly to the Qurʾān — in ʿaqīdah, beyond human opinion |
| Is there enough evidence? | Sufficiently clear evidence in the Qurʾān and the Sunnah — so no room to compromise |
Follow no guru
| # | What we go to in ʿaqīdah |
|---|---|
| 1 | the Qurʾān |
| 2 | the salaf aṣ-ṣāliḥīn — the Companions and the Tābiʿīn |

The six pillars of īmān
| # | Arabic | Pillar |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | بِاللهِ | Allah |
| 2 | وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ | His angels |
| 3 | وَكُتُبِهِ | His Books |
| 4 | وَرُسُلِهِ | His Messengers |
| 5 | وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ | the Last Day |
| 6 | وَبِالْقَدَرِ خَيْرِهِ وَشَرِّهِ مِنَ اللهِ تَعَالَى | the Decree, its good and its evil, from Allah |
The worked example: the Messenger ﷺ, and the middle
| Position | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|
| What must be believed | Belief in Rasūlullāh ﷺ, and that he is the final Messenger | — |
| Extreme A | He was an ordinary man and no more | An extreme |
| Extreme B | He was light (nūr), not a man — or Allah Himself appeared in the form of the Messenger | An extreme |
| The middle | Moderation | The correct position |
(The wording of Extreme B is partly garbled in the recording; only the two poles are stated.)
Promised for the coming classes (his own words)
| Topic | Status |

| Ideological / hidden shirk | "We will look at that too" |
| The six articles one by one | with the manner of believing each |
| Unity | how to hold to it without splitting apart |
| Respect for the Companions | how we honour them; being balanced |
| A clear standpoint on a question | The Arabic term is badly mangled in the recording — plausibly al-walāʾ wa'l-barāʾ, but not clear enough to assert |
| How to place our love (ḥubb) | |
| How to fear Allah's punishment | |
| "We will look at it practically" | |
| A course outline | Said to have been circulated to the group outside the recording |
What is NOT on this page — and why
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| The lecturer's name | The audio does not name him. No attribution is made; continuity from Lesson 1 must not be assumed |
| The āḥād / mutawātir conclusion | Raised in class; the conclusion is not recoverable from the recording. What survives: the classification turns on the chain — the number of narrators, and whether so many could together have spoken a falsehood; a Qurʾānic verse admits "no doubt at all"; in ʿaqīdah one does not go by a single individual. No position on whether an āḥād report establishes creed is stated, and nothing on it is examinable |
| The numerical threshold in that passage | Unreliable in the transcript — deliberately not reproduced |
| The three divisions of tawḥīd | Promised in Lesson 1 — not touched at all in this class |
| The kalimah / asmāʾ wa'ṣ-ṣifāt | Not studied; asmāʾ wa ṣifāt appears only in passing |
| Ziyārat al-qubūr | Deferred again — graves appear only as a recognised example of shirk |
| Madhhab adherence in ʿaqīdah vs fiqh | Not revisited as such — only the "no individual, no guru" rule |
| One item in the non-sources list | Lost in the recording and not guessed at |
| The first ten minutes | Logistics, not teaching |
